MBB TPT2 TRANSFER PORTAL THREAD 2

I've noticed people on this forum for some reason get personal sometimes when they disagree. I'd never seen that before because up until recently I only posted on the OU WBB/Softball forums. I think we can respectfully disagree with each other, can't we?

On an other note, I like that we've brought in 2 guys in as many days, and look forward to seeing what else PM has cooking! Are the two we brought in upgrades, to anyone that actually knows??

Really?....how many message boards have you frequented? Civility is by far the exception rather than the rule on virtually any message board. This place happens to be one of the most civil boards I have ever encountered. Do posters on here get a little personal at times?....sure. But it pales in comparison to most other boards. I think everyone is a little anxious because our program has underperformed lately....so many are second-guessing every move we make (or don't make).

Plus it's worse bc we've gone through tougher than usual years recently.. no big deal imo

my question as well...I don't have time to follow all the portal in's and outs..

It's hard to say at this point. Anybody suggesting otherwise is just wanting to suggest otherwise.

McCollum should be able to match what Sherfield brought, I think. Size being the biggest concern. And any shooting adjustment to playing tougher competition.

Hugley, will definitely make us tougher and stronger inside. Probably a better post game and finishing around the rim. I think he'll be an overall upgrade from T. Groves, but he'll need to prove it.

Unless someone was an absolute star at a high major, it’s always impossible to know how good they will be in a league like the Big 12. I was among the people very high on Bam when he chose us, and we know how that turned out. I’m happy with both these guys, but think there is a huge range of possibilities as far as how they will do.

So who are remaining guys we are realistically in on? Still have lots of scholarships to fill and holes in the lineup. McCollum and Hugley were two I was keeping an eye on so I am very glad we have them, but I’m not sure who might be the next puzzle pieces.

Regarding bigs, Traore is the only one that visited. Quincy Guerrier from Oregon and Ven-Allen Lubin from ND seem realistic options based on our assistant coaches. Guerrier is probably the better option immediately based on his ability to stretch the floor, but he's a one-year rental, and I really like Lubin. Quality athlete that played decent minutes as a freshman and can play the 4 or 5. He just doesn't stretch the floor, so might limit the minutes he can play alongside Hugley and Oweh.

JBam is becoming the default talking point for the portal haters. Hugley put up numbers in a good conference against good competition. And if you just watch MacCollum’s film, he is no JBam.

Agreed. High hopes on a few guys over the past couple of years, especially out the Portal, that just didn't pan out. You just don't know. Fit. Attitude. Learning curve. If they are moving up a level, adjustment to that. Could be adjustments on the academic part as well if they are coming from somewhere that didn't make them do anything (I'd like to think OU isn't THAT bad at this aspect).

We could have done much worse than these two.

Oh I definitely agree and understand. Being a "stud" at a lower level in competition doesn't equivalate to being good in the B12.

I appreciate the comparison to GS...that gives me a better picture. Tanner (in my opinion) was a bit of a liability in the post...Especially defensively. BUT, he did have the "threat" of hitting 3's. As long as he doesn't do the "dummy me" when he screws up like Tanner did I'll be happy...LOL. I get it but man, you're a D1 player...just go do something better next trip down.

I'm am exited to see Uzan take a leader's role next year. Hopefully the 2 Fr coming in will be better than what we lost.

I like the two that we brought in, but I would not confidently say Hugley and McCollum are better than Sherfield and Tanner. We'll see how things play out, but I'd rank them as comparable from what I've seen. We still need one or two more quality guys. If we land Traore and Guerrier, I would predict we win 20-22 games. Part of the improvement will be the expected progression of Uzan and Oweh, as well as the addition of Cooper.

I'm happy we have Hugley coming in, I am, but here are some stats comparing his numbers during his good year to T. Groves last year:

Minutes:
T. Groves - 25
Hugley - 30

Shooting Percentage:
T. Groves - 51%
Hugley - 48%

FT Shooting Percentage:
T. Groves - 72%
Hugley - 71%

Rebounds per Game:
T. Groves - 7.2
Hugley - 7.9

Turnovers per Game:
T. Groves - 1.7
Hugley - 2.9

Points per Game:
T. Groves - 10 (on 7 shots per game)
Hugley - 15 (on 10 shots per game)

Again, I like Hugley, I think his toughness will help the team, but his numbers weren't anything spectacular when you dig in. Good player. Glad he is headed to Norman. Not a guaranteed upgrade overall.

Yeah, I think he's a Tanner replacement, but not necessarily an upgrade. Very much a below-the-rim player. Hopefully he's healthy (mentally and physically) and worked on his offensive range in the offseason. He did not look good in film from this year, so hopefully it's just health.

Note that you are comparing Hugley as a soph vs Tanner as a senior. Most players that are willing to work harder make big strides.

He's also comparing Tanner in the Big 12 to Hugley in the currently weak ACC.

We'll just have to wait and see. I'm happy we got both of these guys but I'm tempering all expectations after the last two years--and they'll stay tempered until conference play (I'll enjoy any success we have in non-conference, but I'm not letting it go to my head).

I'll add that while I'm all for second chances, that car theft that Hugley pulled two years ago was so freaking stupid that it makes me question OU signing him. I'll just cross my fingers that he's learned a lesson and matured--a lot. Had I know about that incident prior to his announcement, I would have been very much against signing him--but what's done is done. I hope he'll be on the shortest of leashes.

Lol dramatic much? Who on earth is a portal hater? Saying that someone taking a huge step up in competition doesn’t equate to hater status. I’m the one you quoted, and I’m probably the biggest portal fan out there. And Bam is far from the only example of someone not accomplishing much after transferring up.

True. But every time there’s excitement about a potential portal player, some Debbie Downer (like you) always has to mention that Bam didn’t pan out. We all know that some players don’t pan out - we watched the season too. But the “Bam not panning out” narrative is getting tired at this point. Can’t we just be excited for one minute without complaining? We just landed two highly ranked transfers.

The poster asked a specific question about whether they will be an upgrade. So I guess we should either (a) ignore the question, or (b) just pretend we know the answer and that it is an unequivocal yes? Being honest and saying that it is hard to know isn’t Debbie downer. It is living in reality.

Honest question: do you feel the need to answer every question on a message board?

And personally, fwiw, I think both portal players we landed will be upgrades. Obviously it will hinge on who else we bring in and how well the team plays together. Last years team had a lot of holes.
