Michigan State launches POY campaign for Valentine

Buy votes? They're sending out checks?

I mean, give me a freaking break, it woudl be embarrassing and disrespectful if a school didn't campaign for their guy.

You know what I mean... Of course they're not sending out checks, but they are trying to campaign for votes. You don't think them sending a little gift with their campaign brochures isn't trying to "buy votes" or to put it another way influence them to vote for Valentine? This is bush league, and yes I think what OU did for Baker was as well... Even though, bias admitted, it wasn't nearly as ridiculous...This kind of stuff bothers me. Plus as I said earlier in this post Izzo's comments irk me. If you're gonna do this crap at least call it what it is...

It's a metaphor, it's not supposed to entice people to vote for him because they love their Swiss Army knife so much. That's not "buying" a vote.

That's exactly what it is... When you are selling something to someone, you always throw in little extra stuff to "entice" their business. Is it a check or a months subscription to Omaha steaks? Of course not, but it has the same intention...

I disagree, I think it's keeping the voters informed of the greatness of your guy, and giving them the relevant information.

If we assumed that every voter would do their due diligence and watch the important games, study the stats, and make an informed rational decision then campaigning would be unecessary. When you send these information packets out hyping your guy, you are ensuring that the voters see the relevant stats, and they can't just ignore your guy. It's giving your guy the best chance to win, which is what every athletic department should be doing for their guys. Buddy can't, and woudln't want, to go talk about how great he is, so the university should be advertising it for him.

The race should be very close between Valentine and Buddy. Valentine is having a historic season as well.

While Valentine is a heck of a player, I think it is buddy's easily
We play in a tougher conference and we have a better team imo.

Buddy:
25.4 ppg
5.5 rpg
2.2 apg
1.3 spg
49% from 3
52% fg
89% ft

Valentine:
19.7 ppg
7.7 rbp
7.3 apg
1.0 spg
45% from 3
50% fg
86% ft

Those numbers are almost identical to me.

They each have the opportunity to "campaign" for themselves on the court... While I understand the sentiment that we need to inform voters, I just disagree with the tactic and it feels a little dirty.

You are assuming the voters are watching all the games, when they almost assuredly aren't.

I guess I don't see how that multi-tool helps keep voters informed. If you want to send a pamphlet or something, I get it, but sending out trinkets and swag is decidedly different from trying to inform voters.

He didn't say anything like that during the win over WVU (or if he did, I missed it).

Go to his Twitter account....dated 17 Feb. Has a lot of positive posts about OU but states Valentine his leader right now for POY.

Well, the 17th is not right now. He's since praised Buddy's 29-point outing against WVU, comparing Buddy's Big 12 campaign to Durant's.

On the 17th, he was, I assume, like many fans on this board, overreacting to the Tech loss (even though he claims to have seen Tech's ascent coming). Saying Valentine is alone in the race for POY is beyond absurd, and I can only assume he now sees it as a two-man race, at least.

Valentine has a legit shot at this. Shooting percentages are creeping closer to Buddy. He averages 2 more rebounds and 5 more assists per game than Buddy.

At the end of the year, if you put their stats next to each other, I bet they are pretty darn similar, with Buddy scoring it a tad better, and Valentine leading most of the other stats.

That is why I said earlier today that Buddy and OU need to finish strong.

Michigan State has a very soft schedule the rest of the way for Valentine to pump up his numbers.

Valentine is the more complete player. Buddy is flashier and more likeable.

It's Buddy's to lose, with Valentine on his heels. Going to be tough for Valentine to overcome what Buddy did in Larryville though.

I would have for sure a month ago said it was Buddy. But Valentine is just more complete. 19.6ppg is damn good. But his rebounding and assist just takes him to a whole new level. I think Valentine is POY. He's had 2 triple doubles(which rarely happens in college basketball) and Buddy hasn't even had a double double unless you count the 10 turnovers. I love Buddy but Valentine deserves it.

Buddy is playing on what i believe is a better team, has played a tougher schedule, and is scoring at 26 ppg. that is pretty rare for college bball.

I wonder how many players have averaged that high of numbers and not won player of year (playing in a major conference)

MSU played a pretty tough non conference schedule as well. KU, Providence, L'Ville, and Florida. I'm not going to tell you who has a better team...the tournament will decide that.

Buddy can score. No doubt. One of the best. But Valentine is averaging 20pts. So only 6 pts less a game than Buddy but Valentine gets 5 more assist a game which racks up to at least 10 points extra that he creates and he gets 2 more rebounds a game.

I'm not taking anything away from Buddy but Valentine brings more than just scoring to the table.

Our strength of schedule is 9 theirs is 62. Our non conference strength of schedule is 91 theirs is 165 That is a big difference.

Valentine also missed four games, three of which were in conference.

How is Valentine's defense?
