Michigan State launches POY campaign for Valentine

He didn't miss any big games. This isn't football. The big games are still to be played. He just missed 4 games. If he misses any big 10 tournament games or ncaa tournament games then he's missed big games.

Nothing personal intended toward you, but I hate that attitude, the idea that in college basketball the regular season is meaningless. First, because it negates four months' worth of games, which is just silly, and second, it elevates one weekend (the conference tourney) above eight full weeks of conference play. And sure, wins in the Big Dance are important, but even if a 25-30 win team loses the first weekend of the tourney, it doesn't (it shouldn't, at least) negate the great season it had.

I think those who follow or are involved with the Michigan State program probably consider their first matchup with Iowa an important game. That loss could be the difference between 1 seed or a 2, a 2 seed or a 3.

He shouldn't be penalized for missing specific games. That has nothing to do with it. I agree that the fact that he missed four games should matter a little, but not much.

I agree. I wasn't arguing that he should, just protesting against the idea that regular season games can't be big games.

I understand.

But if assists/rebounds/etc is good enough info to be used in the PER measurement that the NBA uses quite often, it's good enough for me to use in this conversation. And that is really what I was getting at, if you did a PER calc for Buddy and Valentine, they'd be near even, or Valentine would be in the lead. It's a close race.

Edit: Just saw the post above. So the extra stats definitely pull Valentine back into the conversation.

there is college PER and Valentine just happened to pass Buddy in the last 7 days ..

I don't think there is anything wrong with saying we have a great player in Buddy. I wouldn't want any other college basketball player over him on our team. But I don't have to be bias towards him when talking about POY either just b/c we want him to win it. I look at Valentines stats and am just amazed by them. And I don't know how to find out but I'm curious who is the last player to record a triple double in college...let alone 2 of them.

while rare, not as rare as you are making it out to be.

Lattin will end up with a couple triple doubles next year if he can improve his shooting and rebounding.

I bet he never gets a triple double during his career at OU.

There might be 1 non-conference game where he is just so much bigger and stronger that he get 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 blocks. He had 6 blocks at Kansas and 5 at West Virginia
