Milwaukee vs. Norman

Agree with all the point. My biggest beef on Dallas is the golf sucks. Can't stand ice either, give me a foot of snow over ice anyday...also, it is colder in Oklahoma during the storms than it is where I grew up. The wind and "wet" cold is unbearable.

Golf is pretty good in Oklahoma... In the Tulsa area you can play pretty good golf at Forest Ridge (Broken Arrow), Emerald Falls (Broken Arrow), Whitehawk (Bixby), Clary Fields (Sapulpa), Bailey Ranch (Owasso), etc.

Country clubs are fantastic here, with Southern Hills (world class PGA Championship course), Cedar Ridge (has held some amateur PGA and LPGA events), The Oaks, Hillcrest (bartlesville), Dornick Hills, and many others.

But, boca has us beat in terms of golf.. Arizona has year round golf and the courses are pristine.

I like more trees on the golf course, but the Arizona courses are still really impressive.

Stoops was on an ESPN podcast recently with Ivan Maisel. Ivan asked him about why he's been at OU as long as he has and one of the first things Stoops referenced was the weather. The fact he grew up in Ohio where it gets cold and stays cold for a large part of the year and how he loved the weather in Oklahoma. He mentioned it right after he talked about the administration which is always the first thing he mentions.

Other things to like about living in Norman for someone like Stoops or Buzz:

close to OKC (shopping, dining, nightlife, NBA, etc.)
Short plane ride or drive to Dallas
Golf almost every month of the year
good fishing
Some good hunting
small city feel
good education system

Let's face it, Norman has a lot to like for a young family with the financial means to do whatever they want when they want.

Bingo.

When raising a family is concerned, the advantages of Norman are pretty tough to beat.

Wasn't Norman ranked in the Top 5 "Greatest Places to Raise a Family" a couple years back? Not saying that list is the sole indicator of which city is the best, but it definitely gives a good idea.

I saw an email once that had state mottos. Mississippi's was "at least we aren't Alabama".

Alabama's was...wait for it..."at least we aren't Mississippi".

I found out when I lived in Alabama that is actually the unofficial state motto. And people told me that every day. :ez-laugh:

Haha, I always heard that in Mississippi too.

And although the rivalry isn't quite as big as Texas-Oklahoma, the residents of Miss-Alabama do have its share of debates. Living right near the Miss/Alabama border, the debates were augmented.

I'll admit I would take Alabama over Mississippi though when considering everything. No shame in that.

I just counted. I have been to 33 states. In case anyone was wondering.

Not too shabby.

Curious, but has your itinerary been all over? Or is there a specific region that you have yet to visit when talking about the 17 states you haven't been to?

Haven't been to the west coast or the northeast. Will cross California off at the Anaheim Classic this fall. New England is down the line. I'd like to visit places like Vermont and Maine but I have no interest in, say, Delaware.

I would have a serious discussion about that.

Besides mountains, I really don't see what else I would take.

Grew up in Columbus, and it was absolutely perfect for a sports fan. Lived 30 minutes from Starkville (MS State), an hour from Tuscaloosa (Bama), just shy under 2 hours from Oxford (Ole Miss)... It was great for sports as far as different options were concerned. What was there in New Mexico? New Mexico and New Mexico State?

And as for the party scene and girls I would take MS as well, easily. Especially when looking at Ole Miss and Bama.

The beaches at Gulf Shores and Destin aren't too far of a drive whatsoever, and that was me being in the NE part of the state.

New Orleans was only around 4 hours away, Memphis a little over 2 1/2 hours.

So again, for being a teenager up to the late 20's, I don't really think you can make a strong case because of the proximity factor. Just my opinion.

Besides going to college there for a bit, I personally think Norman sucks. Can see the draw of raising a family there, but I am not in that demographic yet.
You say you're in your mid-twenties but no in that demographic of kids or settling down. I'm 27. Trying to have a kid and married. One must think you're not in the demographic of growing up?

No, it's not just you. I have felt the same way and made my brother mad once when I said that (he's lived in Dallas for 25 years now).

My wife and I lived there for 2 years and I actually like it now compared to before I moved there. The problem is my favorite part of Dallas is the part I can't afford down by SMU/MOckingbird/Northpark Mall.

I live in east Dallas off of Mockingbird. Love it

I played Clary Fields today, good track.

As for this debate/discussion, I think it's fair to simply let people enjoy where they want to live. Everyone has their own preferences on where to live, who am I to say such and such is better than such and such because I said so. I lived in Chicago for 22 years, but have no desire to go back other than to visit friends/family, but there are a lot of enjoyable places to live there. I wouldn't move back to Chicago from OKC, my next move would be Phoenix area or South Carolina, but since me and my wife are building a house here we plan on being here for years. I travel with my job to other places and have yet to find a place outside of the other two I mentioned I would go through a move for. But I don't expect everyone to like Oklahoma or agree with me.

I used to hit that taco bell on mockingbird on the way home from partying all the time when I lived in Highland Park. I should own part of that place.

Really? I played it last weekend.

I thought you lived in OKC?
I do live in OKC, played in Tulsa with some guys up there. I can get to Sapulpa in an hour from where I live.

Don't worry, I won any gas money required.

lol. Cool post. Don't think there is any shame in waiting to get married and have children until you're ready. Maybe we should do what many Oklahomans do, get married/have children before they're ready and get divorced. Oklahoma has one of the highest divorce rates in the nation. Making a conscious decision to wait until you're ready is an educated decision. Done with my MBA in August, then we'll figure the rest out.

I have never understood the appeal of Dallas. It seems like it has no character. Dunno. Maybe it's just me.
I always wondered what somebody would do if they had to go to Dallas to vacation. Six Flags and Wet-N-Wild can only fill up so much time. There's just nothing to the place.

The amount of people living beyond their means in the Metroplex just blows my mind. But I do enjoy the Fort of Worth a great deal.

What ya shoot?
75, but I must note we played 2 off the first tee and my first one quacked, lol. So without that I probably double one instead of par. All the guys in our group were/are pretty good have been playing for a long time, fun day.

Next time you are in Tulsa we should play. I think you would get along better with me than you might think.
