New ARENA as part of entertainment District

i think a new arena by riverwind (aka not in norman ) would be more likely . if the tribe is involved .. (there has been talk of that )
Sheesh, last thing we need as a new SEC member is to play in an arena not only off campus, but to possibly do so on casino grounds of all places is too rich. We're already getting roasted by other SEC fans over the UNP idea enough as it is. Perception is reality and the perception is getting worse by the week.

no one is roasting OU for the UNP arena plan ..

The idea that we're considering playing in an off campus arena 10 mins away is absolutely a head scratcher for some. Not like it's a big topic, but read a couple of SEC message boards where it was touched on and it was laughed at. If it were to move to a casino, I personally wouldn't hear the end of it from the SEC fans I'm surrounded by here in Arkansas. We're not in the Big 12 anymore. This conference is VERY facility-centric. It's a point of pride to the programs and fan bases. Fact is we came into the conference with already the worst arena, baseball facilities and tailgating (which is another story for another day) aswell as tepid fan support to most sports outside of football and softball. The perception isn't great. BTW, outside of Louisville, we would be the only group of 4 program that doesn't play in an on-campus facility.

OU 1000% does NOT have the worst tailgating in the SEC .. not even close ..

I have been to a game at every single SEC venue except arkansas texas and south carolina (that will change next season) and lots of them multiple times

OU would not even be the only SEC school to not play on campus .. hello kentucky ..

I haven't been anywhere other than Texas, so I am not saying you are wrong, just curious which ones you have found to be worse?

As Boulder pointed out, Rupp Arena is off-campus. And though technically "on-campus", the new Foster Pavillion at Baylor is off-campus as it's on the other side of the I35 and off the river. Not really "on-campus" other than the fact Baylor U owned the land.

Add in NC State, Nebraska, I think Wake Forest, and Northwestern from P4 programs, along with Memphis and about half the Big East, and there are PLENTY of marquee basketball programs that play off-campus. Not always ideal but other big-time basketball programs make it work quite successfully.

I've said before on this board and TOS, I'm the biggest proponent of an on-campus arena. I think it would make sense south of Sarkey, or even at the old softball field area. But donors and developers have shown no interest in making that happen. Foster Pavillion cost $225M and it took us years and several NCs to just get the $45M for Love's.

UNP was our best/quickest option for changing the direction of the basketball program. So sad that now looks done, too.

Probably what they should have done from the beginning. Would have had a new arena broken ground by now. Just make it an actual basketball arena and not a multipurpose/bomb shelter LNC is.
yes, riverwind should absolutely have been an option. but it won’t be just for basketball. riverwind i’m sure would want a bigger concert venue. i wish they could build on the unp location instead of lnc, but at least they have the booking foundation to keep an arena busy throughout the year, which is my only concern regarding the arena.

sad day for a new arena, unquestionably great day for norman.

Seriously, some of you are reaching here. Rupp Arena, Pinnacle Bank Arena, NC State etc are less than a mile from campus. Foster Pavilion is literally across the street from the Baylor campus. Not even comparable to UNP. Memphis is not power 4 either. Long story short, we would be an outlier. Again, if UNP happens, great. But if there's legs to a casino sponsored arena on campus, that's your winner by a large margin. Chickasaw nation has insane coffers and could pay for a new arena in cash.

There are no legs to a tribal-sponsored arena. Where is this even coming from? Lol

We didn't say it was comparable to UNP. You stated there wasn't an off-campus arena other than Louisville. But there are.

Rupp is about 2 miles away from campus. Lenevo Arena is about 3.5 miles from NC State campus. Foster Pavillion is "across the street" from Baylor campus, I guess, if you consider I35 a street, and are willing to walk across that street, or under it along the Brazos River.

The point is, those are all considered, off-campus, and outside Foster Pavillion, I believe all those off-campus arenas are run by someone other than the affiliated universities. And all require a student or on-campus resident to get in a car and go to them. Just like UNP.

But, hey, I stated I support an on-campus arena, first and foremost. Unfortunately, my piddly donations, season tickets, and tip-in club fees won't help that cause at all.

And until someone or some group is willing to put $150MM into a LNC reno, or $300MM into a new arena, I'll keep saying the UNP project is the best option we have.

Because at this point, it's the only one.

LOL what? I would find any college that has something like the UNP badass. I highly doubt OU is getting roasted for this idea

I have a suggestion...maybe don't listen to arkansas fans lol
