Re: OU-Northeastern State Stats

Yikes, 14 shots to get 12 points for Newell. Didn't realize he took that many shots.

Fitzgerald with three boards. Ugh.

What do you say to him if you are his coach? Three rebounds against North Eastern?

Do you bench him? He is a good offensive player but it is just unacceptable. I did not see the game but there is zero size on that team. Fitzgerald is bigger than these guys and theoretically a better athlete.

I am not a coach, and I do not have any answers. All I know is he has lots of games where he does not rebound well...

It boggles the mind that he just doesn't have any desire to contribute on the glass. I mean, I know Arent is taller and everything, but the guy put in less than half the minutes that Fitz was in there and still out rebounds him...

Took a few shots he shouldn't have and a couple rimmed out. Overall, I felt he was more aware of what was going on around him than at any point last year.

Grooms has a single assist and a turnover compared to Blair's 5 assists, 2 turnovers and 3 steals but he's the better performer........ One of these guys was more productive than the other tonight, and it's not the one all you guys are talking up. I didn't see them play so tell me there's more than what I'm seeing in the box score.

Assist/TO ration at 1.4:1 against a weak D-II school. Clark and Osby a combined seven rebounds.

Not good.

I agree about Newell. He cannot be our leading shot taker. And it certainly cannot be nearly twice as many as the next player.

Grooms is a much better athlete and has more ability to make shots if things break down...as far as assists/turnovers, he got the ball to open people and I personally felt like he ran the offense pretty well in half-court.

To be sure, Blair looked improved as well and I was personally happy with how he performed, but when every single person who saw the game is saying how impressed they were with Grooms you might take their word for it.

Now, the above being said, the most interesting stat in that box score as it pertains to your post is that Blair actually played more minutes [well, one more minute], but we had walk-ons out there in the first half too, so not sure if that means anything.

Frankly, it wouldn't shock me if Blair started against Washburn, as his play wasn't "bad" at all, Grooms just looked better overall to at least this casual observer. I'll play it down the middle and just say that the PG situation is better than at anytime since AJ found his groove.

Agreed.

I think the best thing about the exhibition was that we looked a little bit better than I thought we would, but there are still some things that CLK can work with our guys on.

Also keep in mind that whether he starts or not [subject to an eligibility issue], Pledger is going to be a substantial mitigating factor in the number of minutes and shots that Newell gets.

I think its several things... First of all- he played only 17 mins, so if he plays his normal 30-35 mins then he has 6-7 rebs. Which in my mind is about what he needs to avg. 2nd of all- they took almost 30 3's.. which equals long rebounds...

Its the 1st glorified scrimmage! Back away for edge!!

Newell taking that many shots, shooters shoot! He will be fine and when pledge gets back, those numbers will go down a good deal.

Good coaching game. We dominated the score, but the stat sheet says we have a lot of room for improvement. We all know Kruger can coach, so it will be nice to see this team develop. He's only had, what, 20 hours with these guys? They're still essentially Capel's team with a little polishing from Kruger. It takes time to break old habits.

I thought Newell did a good job of staying within the game in the first half. it seemed that once the game was out of hand he began to try and find his shot because he was a little off and so he started shooting more. If this was a real game he probably does not force some of those shots.

He was 1 of 8 at halftime. 8 is too many shots for him in any half. IMO, of course.

This...if he comes out knocking down shots, then of course you give him the green light. Eight is too many, however, being the first game I'm sure he was just trying to force the issue.
