OU slides to 10th place in the Conference

1979-80 was my senior year. They started off 14-6 but won only one more game. They lost two road games when last second "makes" were waved off, and one (at NU) was an outright screw job. I think that game was a killer.
The '77 team was the one I was thinking about - they had only one upperclassman (Eddie Fields) who even played very much. The rest of the team was sophomores (McCullough and Carrabine) and freshmen (Stotts, Beal, Curry, Head and Johnson). They finished tied for second in the regular season. Had they had the expanded fields, they would have been in the NCAA as an at-large team.

Don't forget the game at CU when Aaron Curry hit the half-court shot at the buzzer and the Big 8 refs didn't count it.

Finally, somebody uses some logic.

Booger, considering your name, I really don't care what you have to say. Denver, my point that I was making is that if OU wants to have ANY CHANCE of making a run in the big 12, it would be easier to do it through the 6-10 game rather than the 8-9 game. I am really glad you bandwagon fans have lost all faith in this team. Go cheer for Kentucky if you want a constant winner.

Mike -- I've been a sooner basketball fan longer than you've been alive. I've been following OU basketball avidly since the mid 70's when Dave Bliss was named the head coach and the team opened the LNC. I've seen more good basketball teams than bad ones, and this is by far the worst basketball team at OU in a long time with ZERO prospects of any type of improvement for next year.

The 80/81 team was horrible, but they had some parts and they got better as the season went along. Not to mention Billy landed some decent recruits to setup the 81/82 team which was one year before Wayman.

The 2006/2007 was bad, too, but they had some young parts like Taylor Griffin, Crocker, AJ, and Blake Griffin was in the fold and set to arrive for next year.

This team is losing WW, and Tiny (who need to leave anyway, or change their attitude and nothing leads me to believe they can change their attitudes). Crocker is gone. Cade, Fitz and TMG return but TMG can't play defense, and Fitz just isn't very athletic. We have 2 pretty good recruits, but they aren't game changers like Wayman or BG so we will probably be as bad as this year.

Honestly, I would rather place 10th than 9th bc that way we don't face KU in the second round.

yea but we have to win the first round game for that to happen and that is morel likely if we roll in there with a lil confidence

OU has been a consistent winner. The people complaining are anything but bandwagon fans. NM, myself and many, many others have been around a long, long time and were widely considered sunshine pumpers before the Capel era.

:clap
Mike: I don't know if bandwagon fans is the correct term. I think "typical" OU fans would be more appropriate.

Oh, and Booger: If you've been following Sooner basketball since before I was born, you're one old dude. :)

Sorry for the bandwagon call out. I was just merely trying to make a point that if we did win, it would want to be from the 10 standpoint, imo. I was not assuming anything. Even though the chances of us winning a game in KC are slim, it has happened before (i.e. Baylor a couple of years back).

I agree, if you can get past your first round game a higher seed is actually better. The year OU upset Arizona and then beat UNCC was set up in part due to seeding. Had OU been a 9 seed that upset (or beat) an 8 seed they sould have played a 1 seed in the second round and probably lost.

I definitely see what you were trying to point out, but I'm asking you what have you seen in the last 6 games that makes you think they can win the first round game?

If the standings ended today, we would play OSU according to the big12sports.com website. Now, as for analysis, I really do not have too much time because I got class in 5 mins, but I will give you a quick one.

We have played and beaten OSU once already this year. I know James Anderson is playing lights out, but they will be playing with the fact they are already in the NCAA tourney. We will be playing for the season. Each game in KC for this team could be their last, and I expect them to play like it, especially with some of "the guys" attempting to make the jump. That being said, we play hard D for one game and we could win. Especially if they have an off shooting day I could totally see us pulling the upset. Call me crazy, but I have seen it too many times over the past 10 years of attending the Big 12 tourney.

osu is a bad matchup for our team for 3 reasons:
(1) We have nobody, NOBODY who can stop James Anderson and Page together.
(2) Believe it or not, but OSU considers OU their biggest rival.
(3) OSU is playing for a higher seed in the NCAA.

So, if you think OSU is going to show up against their biggest rival (who has owned them the past 4 years) and are playing for a higher seed in their first NCAA tourney bid in who knows how long (3-4 years) yet fail to show up, then you are not thinking straight.

If we were playing Iowa State, CU, heck maybe even aTm or Tech, then I would admit we have a small chance to win, but vs. OSU, no chance the way I see it.

Again, I hope I am wrong.

It really isn't much different of a scenario than OU-OSU last year, the teams are in reverse situations. Personally, I think another Bedlam match-up would mean more to the players, so that's what I am pulling for.

anybody else notice how when booger posts, boca is nowhere to be found?

thats funny cause i almost posted something similiar about him and Boca...

if not he picked the perfect name...just a big ole booger

Thank you...but I'm really not that old. 39 is still young, right? :woot

To add to that, I'm sorry most of you don't agree with me. I'm very passionate about the OU basketball program. I follow them very closely and have for over 35 years and this year has been very tough. Last year was good, but the previous 2 years were very tough, too due to the off court stuff and the multiple blowout losses.

I want to win. I don't care what kind of recruiting class we have. Sign 5 Ernie Abercrombie's for all I care, but just win.

It's not that I disagree with you, you just make it sound like there is no hope for this team. If you watched the last game, and part of the Kansas game, this team is fighting, competing, and getting better (even if that means getting the younger guys, like TMG, big time experience).

I feel the same way you do about the program. I was a ball boy when Ernie was here, and he worked his tail off all the time, including the shoot-arounds before the game. Hopefully, these guys have realized what it takes to make some noise before their season is over. I saw some of it on Saturday, and it would not surprise me to see it in the tournament.

Like I said before, we have beaten osu before, and we can do it again.

BTW, i am just giving you a hard time...nothing personal just as nothing is personal with Boca either, he actually is quite funny...

I understand you are upset as all OU fans are, i am just not a negative person and understand college basketball for what it is...entertainment...plus i understand the landscape of basketball and this type of season does not surprise me as it is going on all over the country, we have just been spoiled for so many years with our teams since the 80's...

Capel has to shoulder much of the blame on this because he chose to bring these guys in, and if they dont produce he is responsible...but to the same degree this is what happens in college basketball, recruiting isnt a science and more times than not Capel is going to be praised for the work he has done here attracting this type of talent to OU, and they will win with it...this is one year in a very short body of work for Capel in which he has a first round win and an Elite 8...

If this type of underachieving continues it will take care of itself, but as a fan i choose to believe in the team and the coaches until they are replaced...

It feels like their is no hope for this team. I didn't watch the KU game because I was more interested in the olympics and I've never been more interested in anything before when OU basketball is on the tv.

I did watch the Baylor game and it was an improvement over the Nebraska/Colorado/Tech/osu games but still too many issues and not enough talent.
