Roy Williams

No you're right. You don't have to play basketball to know basketball, but it sure helps. Like that last sequence, it's hard to know what's really going on in the huddle and what coach is telling you if you haven't actually heard a coach tell you anything.

I think it'd be hard to know what the coach was saying if you weren't in that particular huddle.

How the the hell does it matter if you've been in a huddle before? Doesn't mean you know what's said in every huddle. My God.

Some of those guys aren't there this season because they graduated (not Drew obviously).

...don't forget the Wears who transferred. But you make my point, he is doing more with a younger team, have to give him substantial credit for that.

Izzo's team this year can also be blamed partially on injuries as Kailin Lucas is obviously not the same player he was before he tore his Achilles.

There problems go well beyond Lucas, that team quit midseason even though it looks like they're getting a second wind. They should be a 5 seed at no worse even with an injured Lucas...no excuses with that experience on the floor and on the bench.

I wasn't comparing Capel and Williams.

Didn't say you wer directly, but the "well what do you think of Williams job last year" quote is comparing the two. There isn't a comparison.

thats not the intent of the post. Its simple really. Just b/c you have a down year, doesn't mean you are a bad coach. Thats it.

Because from a blind eye, it looks like Roy didn't call exactly what happened on the floor. Or he didn't know that Miami was going foul twice. A casual fan would likely think that the pg (Marshall) was just free-styling and Zeller was just open. When in reality Roy drew that play up. Then the casual fan comes to a message board and they state that Roy is only a good coach because of the players he recruits. Just look at Haith's face as he exited. He just got owned and knew it. Not many coaches in the country can step on the same coaching stage as Roy.

Agree...but Capel has now had two years of bad seasons. Not saying Capel is bad coach, maybe he isn't OU worthy. I dunno, I don't get paid to make decisions.

Losing Lucious certainly didn't help MSU as well.

And my response to ask about Roy was in regards to him saying "great coaching"

Having lesser talent is also a big portion of that...and of course, much of that, if not all of it, also goes on Capel's head.

Active? Alltime? Its hard to narrow it down to 3

Active:
Coach K
Bill Self
Izzo

Alltime:
Again hard to cut it down to three. Wooden, smith, coach K, rupp, knight

Every single coach you mention played collegiately.

I'm sorry, but all of that has to do with Capel. Wouldn't be opposed to him getting another year, but the talent shortfalls start and end with him.

WW was a two year player, he knew that.

TMG was a malcontent in high school, he knew that.

The one exception I will give, based on what we know for sure, is the Tiny situation...believe he would of been back if the loan wouldn't have happened.

Michigan State was 12-9 and had lost three straight leading up to the Lucious suspension.

To be honest, I think Roy has done a GREAT job this year...probably one of his better depending on what happens starting next week.

I agree....and why I said mostly because I think the Tiny situation cracked him in the head (not that he doesn't deserve some blame for Tiny as well). And the inability to get in TMG's ear...which is his fault for thinking he could change him or the inability to push the right buttons. Unfortunately for Capel and TMG, TMG is only now it appears realizing how much he screwed up and I don't think it will fully hit him until a few years down the road.

This is definitely a fine job by Roy....probably up there with his coaching job the first couple of years at KU. Will say, it does help that the ACC is incredibly mediocre this year. A board I post on has quite a few ACC guys and they think it is the least talented the conference has been in their recent memory.
