Rutgers Mike Rice. Wow!

I agree with the writer.... fire him and the athletic director.

Wow, indeed! I couldn't believe what I was watching on that video.

If Rice isn't fired immediately, something is seriously wrong with the administration at Rutgers. I thought Bobby Knight was bad. But that nutcase excuse for a coach may be worse.

It's inexcusable that he's lasted this long. I'd have to agree that the A.D. also needs to go for enabling and excusing this madness for this long.

It will be interesting to see how Rutgers handles this since they were on the other end of this during the nappy headed hos thing.

I'm surprised there was never any retaliation from players.

I saw a clip last night where one of the players was trying to retaliate but was held back by teammates.

Most of the time, he was going after one of the white guys. Looked like the same one every time.

Rutgers sure knows how to pick em - Mike Rice and Kevin Bannon not too long ago with the same nonsense.

They are one of the most poorly run institutions in the country - still boggles my mind how they've been so mediocre forever considering the amount of talent there is in that area year after year.

Are we in an era now where the only way the right thing gets done is if a public shaming happens?

If so, get ready for tons of public shaming in college sports in the next few years :(

i would have gone after the coach if i got kicked or hit with a ball. i cant believe no one decked his ass

People have an amazing capacity to tolerate things, especially in a group setting with someone in control when it builds over time and they have witnessed others accept this behavior.

I don't know how it got to this point but assume this coach loses it and screams at a player calling him a sissy one day in practice for not taking a charge or screening hard enough. Probably not right but not that big of a deal. Most players would probably accept it because the coach controls their scholarship. As a result no one says anything. Next it is a fairy. Then a fagg*t, etc. etc. Still the players don't do anything and they are being verbally abused on a daily basis. Then the physical stuff happens slowly but progresses to the point of the video. Now assume a new player enters the program when the coach is fully out of control. He thinks it is insane but not one player speaks up. The kid wants his scholarship, no one else is complaining so he he wonders if it is just him and says nothing. Next thing you know that new kid starts to think this is normal or somehow acceptable.

I am not saying this is how it happened. I am simply pointing out that these players may not be all that different from you or me. They were likely conditioned over time to accept this behavior.

Lets hope now that this coach has been fired he also gets sued and loses some serious money to the players he abused. Those kids had one 5 year window to play college sports and he stole it from them with his abusive behavior that clearly appears to be assault, battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Rutgers resident tuition and fees: $24,485
Non-resident: $37,805

And scholarships are up for renewal each year, so the student-athletes really can't do much without expecting retaliation. Hell, the assistant that talked to OTL and reported the behavior to the AD had his contract not renewed for insubordination. Riiiiight

Unfortunately, yes! Does anyone really believe that Rutger's AD would have fired Mike Rice if the video had not gone public? Definitely not me! And for that reason alone, I agree with those who say he and the university president should be fired, too.

Furthermore, Rice should never be allowed to coach young student athletes again...maybe ever! What kind of an example does a coach/teacher/role model set for a young man who is still trying to find his place in this world?

Check out his "apology" press conference video and you'll like him even less. I began to watch it this morning, but turned it off in disgust when he kept trying to add some emotion to his obviously phony voice and feeble attempt to get tears in his eyes. The only reason the jerk is sorry is that he lost his freaking job!

I don't know that anything much has changed from the past but there is a LOT more opportunity (technology/media) that enable people to see things for their own eyes which makes a much stronger impression that words.
