Lol @ skyvue wetting her pants. How hard is it for you to understand that my original observation was that Stoops has flopped in games against top teams for a long time and that I personally don't consider beating missouri in 2007 all that impressive. When challenged I use data provided by Denver which indeed shows Stoops is 4-10 vs teams the were validly considered good after the games were all played giving him credit for beating that Mizzou team.

As for this supposed new era of parity I call BS. There are still only so many top tier athletes and they are mainly attending the same 10-15 schools. The same teams that won titles in the past are winning them today. You have an outlier like Oregon due to the Nike $ but not much else.

If you are going to dog Stoops for not beating top teams, and you are only going to consider the top teams the big named schools that are traditional football powers, then you have to give him credit for beating those powers, even when they are down. That includes wins vs Bama. Wins vs FSU. A win vs Miami. A win vs ND. The wins against UT. And so on and so forth.
 
Sawyer, so far without question the move is playing out in Mizzou/aTm's favor and against the Big XII.

Believe it or not, we have won some games due to coaching. We technically were co-Big XII Champs last year with the least talented defensive front 7 since probably the 1940s or earlier. Obviously, these guys had to be coached up to win as many games as they did. My gripe is that it was easily the LEAST TALENTED DEFENSIVE FRONT 7 in my lifetime. That simply should have never gotten close to that point.

There is more talent this year, but the two best front 7 players are injured, so we're now only slightly better than last year. As a result, a team like Kansas can have a RB gain almost 100 yards in the first quarter. However, you have to give the coaching staff credit for making all the right adjustments to stop them dead in their tracks from the second quarter on. So again, my problem with this regime is not the actual game-day execution, it's the talent level.

In an earlier post, someone mentioned that it wasn't long ago that we had 3 of the first 4 picks of the NFL Draft (and 4 total in Round 1). While that was in 2010, the four guys were all in or around the 2006 recruiting class. I believe 2006 was our last great recruiting class (regardless of rankings afterwards). I think it's about time for another. Is that really asking too much?

I don't agree with this. McGee and King were drafted. McFarland, Washington, Walker, Wort were signed as free agents and then cut. The defense was horrible last year but I don't think you can blame it on talent alone.

I blame last year's defense on the scheme mostly and execution to some degree.

Florida's (lack of) production wasn't much of a surprise. They've been a bad offensive team all year, and MU's defense is built well to take away the few things UF does ok.

The impressive part was 500 yards of offense by MU (with our backup quarterback in his first start). Florida's defense has been damn good all season.

Thanks for not losing to kansas. Had me concerned for a bit.

You're not the only one who was concerned. Stoops and company would have had a hard time finding an excuse for losing to the "Kansas This Is Not Basketball Jayhawks."

I was happy when our defense woke up, and JH finally pulled his head out to dial up a couple of imaginative plays to catch the KU defense off guard. I'll be disappointed is he's still the OC at OU next year. He's a great guy, he's just in over his head in calling the plays.

I agree. There is a drive or two a game where he looks great. Then he will come out and throw it three times in a row:facepalm I realize the players have to execute but he just seems too stubborn when it comes to passing.

He will be here for awhile though i'm afraid. Unless Bob grows some BIG balls, he won't let him go. Best we can hope for is that Bob convinces him to move back to the sideline as Offensive Coord plus QB coach and let someone else call plays. I know Gundy has never wanted to be promoted but I wonder what kind of play calling he would dial up.

I bet if he were evaluated by people that actually know all the details, and understand college football more than the average fan, he would grade out MUCH better than most fans give him credit for. If you think he is up there calling plays that Bob doesn't like, or formulating a game plan that Bob doesn't agree with, and Bob is letting him and the rest of the O staff get away with it, you are crazy. That stuff is agreed upon by the entire O staff and Bob.

Besides, didn't he marry Boren's daughter? Yeah, he isn't getting fired. lol

WHoa, you are literally the first person I have heard or seen say that. He is even quoted as saying you have to pass to set up the run.

This is logical and I used to believe it more but I'm starting to get the feeling that Bob is more hands off than I thought. He was quoted after texas telling the media that they would have to as Josh and the offensive guys questions about the game plan and why we were forcing the passing game.
That's throwing him under the bus and is pretty ****ty to do if Bob has control of the play calling game plan.

My wife said the same thing in the first half last Saturday. She added, "we need to pass more." I explained that you've got to establish the run to open up the passing game. But, what the heck do I know? lol

To be honest, I don't have a problem with our balance. We're at around a 3-2 run/pass ratio for the season so far. I think that's about where we need to be for the QBs we have on our roster.

My main gripe with Heupel is that he sticks to the same plays too much. Meaning he calls the same plays possession after possession, even when they're not working. He's too plain vanilla for my taste.

For a guy who played quarterback under two of the most imaginative OC's we have ever seen at OU, Leach and Mangino, it's like JH forgot everything he learned from them. He does very little to catch opposing defenses off guard. Watch any game you want every Saturday and you'll see more exciting, imaginative play-calling than anything we have seen in last three years with JH as our OC.

The surprising part to me is that Josh was one of the best QBs I have ever seen at changing plays sent in from the bench. Now, it's like he's afraid to make a mistake if he calls something different from the coaches box.
 
The thing about the running to set up the pass, or passing to set up the run, is it is all dependent on your team.

If you can't run basically whenever you want (think Bama now, or OU under Switzer), or pass whenever you want (think OU under Bradford and Jones), successfully, you have to use the other element to take pressure off what you want to do. Right now, OU can't lineup and just do either one successfully. To me, that makes it much more difficult to have a good offense. We have such a small margin for error right now, that one bad run play, one dropped pass, one bad throw, and we're behind the chains and struggling to pick up a first down.

For the life of me I can't understand how anybody can criticize Landry Jones after seeing Knight and Bell this year. I know LJ made some bone headed plays, but he made 100x more good plays than what we're currently seeing.
 
OU is running the ball better than they have since AD was here. Better than they did with Murray. And I know that the numbers show that we are at the right % of run vs pass, it just seems like the timing in when JH calls the runs vs pass is messed up.

So yep...all that changed with the move to the SEC right? You now have a real defense b/c in less than two years you have completely turned the defense around? And its a true run game for the same reason?
