I haven't frequented the board much lately but was wondering if anyone on here had any insight as to when the NCAA will rule on his eligibility and what his chances are looking like. I know NCAA rulings come on their own arbitrary time schedule.

Last I heard the paperwork had not been sent to the NCAA yet. That was in late July, so it could have been sent in by now.

The takeaway is that Coach Kruger wanted to make sure all of the points in the appeal are covered, plus there is still plenty of time before the season tips off. Hopefully, the NCAA will not drag this out too long. But, even if they do or the appeal is denied, Tashawn will be a valuable member of the team next year.

Appeal has reached the NCAA.

Weird time for OU athletics with all the high profile players in legal/NCAA limbo.

Wrong. The University is dragging their heels. The coaches are more than ready for the appeal to have been sent. Of course one of the big reasons is Houston hired a new coach one w NCAA problems. Which traces back to us.

Hopefully the administration has turned it in or will very soon. The team wants him to play now. It also allows us to offer another scholarship for 15. We can't until we know if he will have graduated.

I don't think Sampson previously being at OU has much if anything to do with this situation. Sampson has been gone for 8 years. Furthermore, his violations at OU were not particularly serious.

I have some experience filling out NCAA waivers (not extensive experience but some experience...and mine was more on the medical hardship side) and the closer you get to the start of school, typically it takes longer to get a response back because of the backlog of cases.

I disagree.

I asked Thomas two weeks ago if he had heard anything on his waiver request. He said no. He thought then that something would happen the next week. That would have been last week. I checked with a couple of people the other day and apparently nothing came down as expected.

The process is that the university request a waiver of the transfer rule that requires a player to sit out a year. That request is either granted or denied. If denied, an appeal can be filed. Then, that appeal is either granted or denied. If denied, the decision can be litigated.

My best information is that the NCAA has yet to issue a ruling on the original waiver request. If that request is denied, OU will certainly appeal. They want him eligible and are willing to buck up some to get it done. However, even though it may not come in a timely manner, most around the program expect the waiver request to be granted.

Good info garyeb2. I appreciate you checking it out and telling us what you've recently heard. A lot of us expect his request to be granted, but it's not critical to know now because practices don't start for another 2 months ...... but we want to know.... now!!

The football team is also waiting on rulings for Baker Mayfield and Dorial Green-Beckham ...... and their need-to-know is more critical because their season is about to start.

I have a bunch of questions. I would be curious to know how long it takes the NCAA to research the facts and make a ruling on transfer waivers, and how many cases they review in an average time period. Is it the same review board for all cases? How big is the board? Do they meet as a group or just teleconference to discuss? Is it a majority rule or does it have to be approved by a defined margin? How big is their backlog?

I'll add one more question to your list. Does it take longer for the NCAA to make a decision when it's OU, than say an Auburn or Texas A&M where two high-profile athletes were involved? There have been others, but those two come immediately to mind.

Sorry, but it seems to me the process takes longer when OU is the school waiting for a decision. Jalen Saunders is a good example of what I'm talking about. No one will ever convince me that he had to miss the first five games or so of his career at OU because the NCAA kept dragging their collective feet.

If anyone who reads what I've said concludes that I'm no fan of the NCAA, you would be right. The politics that organization has played over the years has been downright disgraceful.

the ncaa didn't drag their feet .. ou got the ncaa ruling back before the season started ...

but that ruling was NO .... then OU appealed and that took a while

Thanks for the heads up! I didn't know about the appeal, so clearly I was wrong about the delay in Jalen's decision.

I still think OU gets the short end of the stick sometimes. That may not be the case with Thomas. It just seems to me that the NCAA tends to drag out their decisions, except in high-profile cases that attracts the attention of the national media. I also think politics (favoritism, to use another word) plays a role in the speed a decision process takes sometimes.

What did you disagree with? That it won't effect the outcome or that the violations weren't major?

I disagree with that Kelvin's relationship with OU doesn't matter. It doesn't with the NCAA. I believe that somebody in our administration doesn't want that being one of the reasons that OU lists for Thomas leaving Houston.

i agree there seems to be no ryme or reason in dealing with the ncaa

The only power the NCAA has is the power that schools/people give it.

All schools should break ties with the NCAA right away.
