Could not imagine that this women's team would sink like a torpedoed WW2 freighter It's an old cliche but has Coach C lost this team? Can they not respond and play up to their hype? Usually a team picked to win a conference does not slide to the lower middle of the pack.
Have there been that many injuries?
Will there be improvement next season with lots of new blood?
Absolutely not calling for a HC change but what does OU need to turn this thing around for '14-'15?

Let me ask a question - first I don't know anything from the end side of this team and I'm not saying or accusing anyone. Here the question - could there be some trouble within the team, this team just does not play together. There is no team spirit, players don't seem to act like they like each other, also they just seem to have "I don't care attitude". Coach Coale has been around a long time and never have I seen one of her teams play as bad as this team does. AE doesn't have the kill attitude she use to have, that could be a health issue, don't know of maybe this team is just bad.

The TEAM is in disarray. Let's look at what is consistent and what is different. Sherri has won with all kinds of talent. She won with players that nobody else wanted. She went to the Final Four with unknowns. Now, we think Sherri has lost it? Really?

If you have ever taught, ever coached, or ever played, you have found that there are people who have everything it takes, but they can't be taught. They may be brilliant, but they somehow don't use logic in their thought process. They may be athletic, but they continue to make mistakes that keep them from manifesting it. There are practice players. Often, there are game players who just can't deliver at crunch time. A bench player is better at crunch time.

Behavior is behavior. Sometimes, you can overcome it by teaching or coaching. Sometimes, it is like alcoholism. It just hangs on for life, and there is no way to overcome it. Every day is a potential success, or failure.

We have talent. Aaryn was a McDonald's All-American. Griffin was a Parade All-American. Kornet was a WBCA All-American and the MVP of their all-star game. Hook was recruited as a freshman. There isn't anything wrong with the potential.

Vegas could shoot when she got to OU. Some thought she would be a point guard. Others recognized that she was not a good ball-handler. She has learned to play defense. But, after four years, she is still a spot up shooter. She doesn't create her own shot. If she tries, she is as likely to dribble it off her foot as she is to get off a shot. She dribbles into trouble and loses the ball. She has never been one that you wanted to have the ball. She catches and shoots, and she is not good if you ask her to create more. She is what she was as a freshman, with a bit better defense.

Griffin is a role player and a good one. The problem is that she is being asked to be a Chamberlain, Paris, or Jabbar. She is someone who can kill you if you are concentrating on someone else. She hits cripples well. She plays solid defense, and she blocks shots well, better than officials think. But, she is not a power center.

Morgan? Morgan is like the other two seniors. She is good, if she isn't the focus. She is a role player. But, none of these three are vocal leaders. None are what you look for in a leader. They aren't the ones who want the ball at crunch time. They would all prefer to have someone else that the defense is concentrating on. We don't have that player.

We had it in Whitney. I think we had it in Maddie. I think we will have it in Ortiz, maybe in Pierre-Louis and Carter. Maybe in Little. But, we don't have it this year. I'm not sure that you can teach it or coach it. I think Sheri was absolutely certain that she had it in Morgan. I think Sherri is more disappointed than the board.

If we had a go-to player, I would love to have these three on my team. But, none is that go-to player. We can't rely on them to show up. The best at making an effort in every game has been Griffin. But, all need that go-to player to work off of.

As much as we have taught it, we still don't block out on rebounds. We still dribble it carelessly and get it stolen. We make the same mistakes, and it doesn't improve. Aaryn makes every mistake now that she did as a freshman. Morgan makes every mistake now that she has ever made, perhaps more of them since she has the ball so much. Griffin has improved. But, there is no Jo, no Whitney--no Maddie.

I think Sherri has made only one error. She did not recognize that none of these were gong to step up. Someone has always stepped up for her. Every year, someone steps up to take the reins late in the year. This year, she doesn't have anyone, and it has caught her off guard. She needs to work though Gioya, Sharane, and Kornet---maybe even with the other freshmen, and find some key for the future. We have those who will step up next year.

I can only think of one year since I've been watching that there was trouble within the team and I seem to remember Sherri hinting at that in interviews. I haven't seen or read every interview this year, but in the ones I've seen, there was no hint of that.

This is a case where the whole is not as good as the sum of the parts. There is talent (though not to the level of past teams) but the chemistry just isn't there.

Team chemistry has always been Coale's strong suits but not this year.

What UNKNOWNS did she go to the final four with?????????? Please let us know.

1 bad year makes you think. If next year is bad. Then Coale really needs to re-think everything. What is most frustrating is that everyone has seen what this team can do. They had Louisville on the ropes. This team is not the same team mentally. If team chemistry is off. Then it makes me wonder what players or coaches won't be back next year.

I've had the same thought.

I don't think the team is in disarray. I don't think that the problem is all that complicated. I think that it is a simple matter of our players current skill level is rendering a just and fair result. A talent upgrade will cure all ills.

We have a shooting guard who had a shot at setting the NCAA record for treys. What about that is not talent. Last year she did a good job of changing pace and getting to the hoop or open for mid range jumpers. This year not so much. 64,000 dollar question.

It is a chemistry issue - the guys are not playing as a team. Chemistry issues - when you are working with 18 - 21 year old women can be deep, mysterious and complex - or totally ridiculous if all truth be know about it, especially if ones are not truthful during heart to heart talks. The team has lost the chemistry that was there early in the season - which means something(s) has come up. It will pass. How many times I have made vegetable beef stew on a cold winter day- used the same ingredients as always and the same recipe but the soup was not fit to eat. A mystery.

I just saw a quote from L Kruger. He said he has never had a team, that had so many gym rats. I wonder if the womans team has any. I like Dungees attitude. Her tweet " Going into this to kick butt and leave only one to tell the story.. and thats the tape!! " talking about the playoffs. I just hope OU takes a step back and looks at how they can improve. Then the players put in some work during the summer. I can't wait for Coales next blog. Maybe she will write about what she learned or can fix.

True and I dont know why. The blame game isnt fruitful without more information than any one of us possesses. They can still "click" but I'm not hopeful.

I really enjoy reading everyone's thoughts on the team. That makes for a very good sports message board.

Here is what we know:

1. 4 of the starters this year started last year.

2. Gioya (sometimes Kornet) now start in place of Joanna.

3. From reading Twitter, it seems clear that Morgan, Gioya, Kornet, Maddie, Peyton, T'ona, Aaryn, Kaylon, Shaya, and Sharane are all very close off the court. Not saying the others aren't but I don't follow all of them and some seldom use Twitter.

4. The coaching staff is the same.

Some have suggested we have a lack of leadership. I really don't know but, as I've said previously, I personally think that's over-rated any way.

Some have suggested a lack of communication. I don't know that Joanna was a great communicator so I don't see that component being much different this year than last.

Some believe we have a chemistry problem. Other than what I posted under #3 I really have no idea. But, players don't have to like each other to play well together, i.e. Kobe and Shaq.

Let's look at players stats from last year to this year:

Name.................Last year..........This year
Aaryn..................19 ppg................18 ppg
Sharane...............10 ppg................12 ppg
Griffin..................11 ppg................12 ppg
Morgan................10 ppg................11 ppg
Total...................50 ppg................53 ppg

Joanna averaged 10 ppg last year while Gioya and Kornet combined are averaging 11 ppg.

Last years team averaged 72.6 ppg while this team averages 77.5 ppg so offensively we are doing better than last year.

Last years we gave up 66.6 ppg and this year we are giving up 67.7 ppg

Rebounding has dropped slightly from 40.3 rpg last year to 39.9 rpg this year.

We averaged 16.4 fouls per game last year compared to 20.8 this year. Although that doesn't look like much at first, I think that has turned out to be pretty significant. We still have not adjusted to the way games are called as well as our opponents and we have averaged more fouls than our opponents thus far.

While the defensive stats don't support my theory, I do believe we have given up points this year in critical games by going to the zone. I think most fans on here agree that our zone leaves shooters wide open for easier shots. Our man defense isn't great but is certainly better than our zone. Why Sherri keeps going to the zone is puzzling to me.

Someone mentioned a lack of gym rats. This opinion is strickly an opinion because I am not down there to watch but, from reading Twitter, I have noticed that Dungee often tries to get into the gym during weekends, summers, Christmas breaks, etc. I never hear about this team practicing unless the team is having a scheduled practice. Lon has talked about having to run players out of the gym. I don't think Sherri has that problem.

My last observation involves "killer instinct". When I see players beat us to lose balls, players standing around while opponents grab offensive rebounds, when it doesn't seem to matter if we fail to secure a rebound and the ball goes out of bounds on us, committing silly fouls, failing to jump for rebounds, etc, etc, it indicates to me that we could be lacking in passion and "refusal to lose". I always thought that DRob refused to lose on MANY nights. I don't see that with this team. In fact, if you read Twitter after a loss, you would never know we lost. You read Twitter following a football loss and I can assure you the guys take that personally. I think this team needs a Chelsea Dungee who is a gym rat as well as a Gabe Ikard who always took losses very hard and give me a DRob who played her heart out every time she walked on the court. I thought there was no way we could beat OSU or Alabama in football but our team refused to lose to teams that had proven all year they were better than us. I firmly believe it takes more than talent to win. It takes preparation, determination, maximum effort, playing smart, and limiting mistakes.

There is an article in today's Oklahoman about the OSU game. I would link it but it is beyond my skills. The quotes from Sherri are most interesting. She basically says she does not know what to do! Sounds like a coach that has lost her team.
