Tech hiring Billy G "imminent"

If OU wanted BCG, they could have had him easily. OU can do a whole lot better.

Let OU get a coach in place. Let Billy to TT become official. Then hit me up.

Define "better".

Because on name alone, I doubt we get a bigger name. If we land somebody that ends up being leaps and bounds better than BCG, it'll be a shot on the dark that happens to work out. All the guys that are for sure better? I don't see them coming.

I don't have all the answers. My pick (my sig) isn't a "splash hire" for the common fan. I also realize that OU has to produce a big name who will inspire season ticket purchases, but BCG isn't the way to go. I'm sorry, it's true. I believe in second chances, just not fourth chances for BCG at OU. Can you imagine the football team hiring a 3-time DUI guy? It wouldn't happen. BCG has had some success but nothing to write home about. "He can recruit Texas"...That's not a prerequisite for employment at OU. If that's the case, just let Stoops coach both. Sorry, this circus just doesn't need to stop in Norman and I'm glad Joe C. is showing competence.

By the way....

"Sampson - 72%
BCG - 73%"

So we're only looking for ex-A&M coaches that had a good 3 year run? We have slipped really far down the old totem pole, huh. Might as well call Turgeon because he's done it for 4 years.

Oh and that's 7 years for BCG and it's 62%. Who did we fire recently that had a similar winning percentage in about the same time (9 years)?

I think Turg is a bit overrated, but it's hard to argue with what he's done. He's at 72% at aTm.

Look, my goal, at this point, for OU, is to find a coach that can keep us in the top 4-5 of the Big 12 year in and year out. If you do that, your going to have some top 2-3 finishes in there, and some decent runs in the Dance. Gillespie proved he could do that in the Big 12. Turg is proving he can do that in the Big 12. Anything better than that, IMO, is asking too much at this point. Sure, back when Kelvin had things strong, I was ready to find somebody that might be able to kick it up a notch. We aren't that program right now. We need to right the ship.

I'm not interested in what guys have done in other conferences, or divisions. If they have Big 12 experience, to me, that is the best indicator.

Do you or do you know think that BCG could get us back to where Kelvin had us?

Something to consider: He's never been at a school longer than three seasons.

Fair enough. Some of that is legit in order to move up (UTEP, to aTm, to UK), and some of it (UK) is b/c of his personal issues. I don't think he'd look to leave OU though. And if he isnt' drinking at all.....well, let's just say I don't think alcohol will be an issue. He didn't have to clean up his act. Sounds like it was his choice to do so. If that's the case, it'll probably stick.

He's not coming. I get it. But I think he'll do some nice things at TT.

Didn't he try to run off Acie Law when he first got the A&m job for something dumb?
He is just hot name because of his story. Good coach but not a program changer. He will do solid job at tech.

And?

he was offered a major job after a few seasons at UTEP...then offered the Mecca of college basketball after a few seasons at A&M...for most, a coaches dream...

I am confused at anyone that uses this as a negative towards him...

No...he was just tough on him and Acie wasnt sure if he wanted to stay because he doesnt take any crap...

I'm not certain, honestly. It's a gamble.

BCG caught lightning in a bottle at A&M. He basically inherited some solid players that had never had a decent coach, then recruited a few more and enjoyed some success for a couple of years. The turnaround at A&M made him a hot commodity, but then he went to Kentucky and was quickly and thoroughly exposed.

Think about it, guys. If a coach can't win at Kentucky with a roster full of all-world talent, why do you feel so strongly that he'll succeed over the long haul at OU? I agree with the minority of the posters who believe we can do better than Billy C.

So no big deal if he leaves in three or four years?
