I agree with Fran on UT, they are going through some "addition by subtraction" from last year. They were one of the worst free throw shooting teams in the country, they didnt play team basketball, they were slow, etc.

They are moving the ball so far this year, they can shoot, they will be athletic and productive in the paint with Tristan Thompson (who will be all freshman) and Gary Johnson. Jordan Hamilton and J'Covan Brown will be very good on the perimeter.

They look good.

Tap. The. Brakes. They beat Navy ranked #299 in the power rankings and now Louisiana Tech ranked #195. We'll see how they do against Illinois next week before we crown them a "good" team this year.

Texas' style of play where they get after you on the defensive end and try to make you play helter skelter tends to work better early in the season when teams are more prone to turnovers and poor shot selection.

As the season wears on, they can be exposed. Tristan Thompson has impressed me. But can he do that against size? Maybe. He's better than I expected. Jordan Hamilton is taking the ball to the hole which will make him a lot better player. Gary Johnson is a player- no doubt about it. We'll see if he can limit his off court exposure to J'Covan...

Is the 4 PG platoon going to work this year? Didn't last year but it seems Barnes is sticking with it. Balbay, Joseph, Lucas and Brown. Is Balbay a senior? If not, they may have a 5 PG platoon system next year adding Kabongo to the mix. Awesome.

I hear the parting of ways with Shawn Williams was not pleasant. Barnes better watch himself. Kids are talking... And Texas is redshirting Clint Chapman? Really? Isn't he a senior?

They have all the pieces to be good, with defined roles (as Fran said). They are very talented.

PG: Corey Joseph (#4 point guard nationally)
SG: J'Covan Brown (#7 shooting guard nationally)
SF: Jordan Hamilton (#1 small forward nationally)
PF: Tristan Thompson (#6 power forward nationally)
PF: Gary Johnson (Very productive and talented senior)

And its not just rankings, these guys are legit. They are good. This is their team now. It isnt Damion James or Dexter Pittman anymore.Thompson has looked great. He looks like he will be in the running for freshman of the year.. Hamilton is gonna be awesome... Joseph is very good.

I mean, you can doubt them all you want, but I have seen them play twice now and their talent is obvious. The way they are playing is obvious. Its a well built team of very talented players.

They are still young and will surely have some growing pains, but they should be a top 5 team in the Big 12 this year with mostly underclassmen.

I am believer right now.

SG: J'Covan Brown (#7 shooting guard nationally) (#NR Reading Comprehension Nationally)

ABD-I'm not disagreeing with you that Texas is athletically talented, there is no question about that. BUT I'm not as quick to agree about the "they can shoot" comment. After their first two games they have shot 50.8% and 45.9% from floor which IS very respectable but also in those two games they shot 23.5% (4-17) and 25% (4-16) from 3. I also watched both games and yes their team speed will give a lot of teams problems and yes Thompson will be considered one of the top (if not the top by the end) freshmen in the nation, but I'm not quite sold yet on their ability to shoot, at least from the outside. And we all know that the 3 ball can keep teams not as good as you in the game and eventually knock teams that are better athletically off. We'll wait to see what happens. For the record I agree that they will be top 5 in the Big 12 based on athletic ability on their team.......at least they should be.....

outside of hamaliton and maybe lucas they don't shoot the 3 very well .. and they are almost as undersized as we are ..

baylor will be a huge problem for them with the long 2-3 zone ..

Why do people keep argueing with ABD on post like these??? It's the same thing only with a different team this time.

Texas, OSU, Missouri, Colorado, Tech, KU, KSU = good. OU and A&M = bad. We get it.

You guys keep giving him feedback and he's going to keep beating the dead horse.

Beating a dead horse? I think this is the first time ive ever started a Texas thread.

So we dont want to talk about Texas now either?

  • OU's Maui opponents
  • OU's non-conference opponents
  • OU's conference opponents
  • OU player rankings
  • OU coaching staff opinions
  • OU recruiting issues
  • Stats and Facts regarding OU or other teams
  • Cade Davis and his role for OU
  • Texas (OU's secondary basketball rival) and where they stand in the Big 12

Man, you just don't like ANYTHING I post, do you Capelfan?

Texas is going to be good, just not this season. The talent is there. But they have so many young players, I can't see them putting it all together to become a force in conference or nationally this year. Time will tell I suppose.

Said the same thing last year going into the season that they were vastly overrated, simply because they had sketchy point guard play.

I think they'll be a one-and-done tournament team (at best), once again because of shoddy point guard play.

You dont think Corey Joseph will develop into a very good point guard? He has averaged 6.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in his first two games in college. I bet he is a 10 ppg guy but the time conference rolls around.

Look at who they played the first two games. If he puts up 7-10, 5 and 3-5 on Illinois then I will believe he will be a good point. Not against La Tech and Navy

Couldn't you have said the same thing about Texas at this time last year.

No, you actually could have still said it about Texas in January last year.

How'd that turn out?

When did I say I didn't think he would develop?

He's only a freshman. As a freshman I don't think he will be good enough to help lead Texas to anything further than a first round tournament game.

Who knows how he'll be in the future, he could definitely be very good down the road. I'm talking about this season though.

Look at who they played the first two games.

Exactly. And its not like he was setting the world on fire in those 2 games, either.

Navy: 2 for 7, 0 for 3 from 3, 3:3 assist-turnover.

La Tech: 3 for 9, 2 for 4 from 3 (better), 4:2 assist-turnover.

I'm assuming he will improve from an offensive standpoint (don't know how much, like you said these two teams aren't anything), but I'm using these numbers to show the side that bigabd wasn't showing.

I didn't bother to look up stats, I trusted that abd's were correct. I do know that last years OU team would beat both those team by double digit points.

You could've said it about Texas at any point in any season. They usually aren't as good on the court as they are on paper, though.

This is interesting, because Texas's roster is the exact opposite of your recruiting philosophy. I agree with Texas. I like how they are building there program, a mix of regional recruiting and targeting a few top 30 recruits. I'm ready for Capel to do the same thing with Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas recruits.

OU can't recruit like Texas can (or at least I havent seen OU sustain that level of recruiting), therefore, the recruiting strategies should be different.

Their frenetic style of play will not serve them well with the lack of quality depth in the paint. Barnes has seemingly done less with more the last few seasons, they got worse as the season wore on.
