he did a lot of good for us recruited 4 mcdonald all americans and before ou had recruited what 1?

The misinformation that gets spread on this board by some of our own fans is disheartening.

OU had four McDAA's before Capel arrived. I'm not going to tell you who they are; do your own homework.

And bragging about Capel bringing in four McDAA's when two of them (and arguably three) played key roles in sending our program into the dumpster is just mind-boggling. Who the hell cares what awards Tiny and TMG received before arriving in Norman? I care about what they did IN Norman, under Capel's tutelage. And what they did while wearing crimson and cream is nothing to brag about.

If TMG wouldnt have been a Jerk and Tiny wouldnt have been money hungry those 2 make 1st or 2nd team Big 12 in 2011 and we likely land Terrence Jones {Kentucky} and that right there would have put us in the NCAA!!! that wasnt Capels Fault TMG Tiny were PUNKS and bailed!!! But im glad We have Kruger here that has already turned around what Tmg Tiny took down

Ifs and buts, candy and nuts.

It was Capel's job to find players who had strong skills AND were solid citizens. And it was also his job to do all he could to keep them on the straight and narrow while they were representing OU. He failed miserably. The inmates were running the asylum, and he never held their feet to the fire. He never even sat their asses on the bench for a game to show them he meant business.

The oft-repeated notion that Capel was a great recruiter just boggles the mind. Stop focusing on the recruiting rankings and focus on what players do while in Norman. That's what counts. Five, six or twelve star rankings don't matter a whit if the young man is a self-centered clown who poisons the collective team attitude.

It kinda is his fault, you have to know the character of who you are recruiting

What you don't seem to get is that it was pretty well known that each of those guys were that way before Capel recruited them. There is a reason TMG and Tiny didn't get recruited like most recruits ranked where they were do. Off the court stuff. But Capel was so insistent on trying to land those top 20 players, that he didn't care. And he couldn't recruit anything to put on the court with those guys. His entire tenure at OU was a joke, and he was lucky, as was mentioned above, that Kelvin recruited Taylor to OU, or it would have been even worse. You keep saying the past is the past, yet you are the one that started this thread.

There is ZERO chance we would have ever landed Terrence Jones.

I disagree with that. Kids like that end up at "unexpected" schools relatively frequently. Should LK not have recruited Randle to OU like he did? Capel's problem wasn't going after the studs, it was going after the studs for too long, with absolutely zero backup plan. Sometimes kids just bond with a coach, and lesser schools can steal a kid away. I'll never get upset at OU coaches, in any sport, for trying to get the best players to OU. But they better have a good contingency plan, b/c it is unlikely in a lot of cases.

I disagree...he had very good role players to go with Tiny and TMG in that class with Fitz and Bird.

When their freshman season fell apart, so did OU basketball.

Ultimately, I think Capel envisioned this starting lineup in 2011

C- Tiny
PF- Fitz
SF- Clark
SG- Bird
PG- TMG

Probably a pipe dream, but that COULD have been a solid to great team. But, Capel couldn't and obviously didn't keep them together (and their egos in check). Sad

And what was the bench suppose to be? Takes more than 5 players to have a good team.

You sir are wrong!! we were his the school he was going to tell TMG Tiny bailed on us.. Terrence Ross [Washington]almost ended up a sooner too if those punks dont bail. add the Terrences with TMG Tiny and we also got Cam and TJ Taylor and 2011 were a great team even after a horrlble 2010

Of course it does, but you only need 2-3 bench players and we will never know what that bench would have been because OU's recruiting took a nosedive when the Gallon stuff came out.

And of course, the 6th player and likely the PF on that team isn't Fitz but is actually Osby, moving Fitz to off the bench.

But to say that Capel "couldn't recruit anything to put on the court with those guys" is incorrect IMO

This and let's move on. We spend WAY too much time talking about Capel and the orange school to our north on this board. Capel's gone and they aren't worth the time. Move on, please. We have real head coach now and a real college basketball program again. Lets discuss that.

I bolded the most accurate part of your post.

Not really. Word is that T. Jones, Doron Lamb and Aziz N'Diaye were thought to be OU leans as a package deal. To Capel's credit, he had developed such a strong relationship with Jones, OU was a legitimate contender to sign the kid. Capel was so sure of it that he didn't even have a Plan B. Thus, he was left scrambling to fill roster space, which is why we signed one of our weakest recruiting classes in years that season.

What nickebasketball left out in his "what IF's" is that Jones and the others went in another direction because they couldn't be sure where the impending NCAA investigation would lead. Jones and Lamb chose UK and Aziz ended up at the U of Washington.

Like I said in an earlier post, there is more to the story (a lot more) than one or two "what if's." It would be totally unfair of me or anyone else to point to the bad and leave out the positives during Capel's time at OU. He did indeed sign four McDonald's AAs and take us to the Elite Eight in 2008. That was before the stinky stuff hit the fan and things begin to fall apart at the seams. Not all of it was Capel's fault. But when you're the head coach (the CEO, if you will), everything that happens on your watch is your responsibility.

thank you! Capel might be the best recruit coach out there im sure he had something to do with Duke getting Parker this year

There is no denying Capel's ability to recruit. Unfortunately for him (and for OU), a head coach's job doesn't end with recruiting.

Just stop.

He IS a really good recruiter - great evaluator? meh. But certainly the man could recruit top talent. He is in a great position at Duke to use his skills and gain coaching experience from K.

Agreed. There is little doubt that Jeff will get another chance as a head coach in time. With the experience he is getting now, he should be a lot better prepared to deal with the things he faced at OU.

More importantly, perhaps, he will learn that it's best to avoid spoiled brats like TMG and Tiny, who have the potential to be more trouble than they're worth.
