UNT extends McCasland contract

More coaching experience as an assistant than Juwan Howard and Penny Hardaway combined, and those hires look pretty good.

Watch any Houston game for the last 5 years and it’s pretty apparent Kellen is completely engaged in coaching the game. And no doubt he has passion, energy, and charisma. My biggest concern would be recruiting as I’m not sure who he has been responsible for recruiting at App St or Houston.

I would be opposed to Kellen vs a guy like Moser or Enfield but would want him over Turgeon any day.

I think Hardaway will lose his luster fast. He's a very shady recruiter & doesn't seem to be in the same conversation as Howard when it comes to coaching ability.

I initially didn't want Kellen, but starting to warm up to the idea. I'd definitely take him over Turgeon & Enfield. But can he be the bad guy a HC has to be? Will he try to act like his dad or be himself? He'll definitely need to bring in a great staff to help him transition.

I know there are a lot of good coaches out there but I for one would like to see OU go with youth which makes Kellen my first choice. I know he doesn't have HC experience but he has a great back ground and he loves OU so unless he completely fail on his face I think he would be around for sometime.

If Joe C thinks Kellen is the guy then I support it. There will be no on the job training here. He either gets results from day 1 or we find someone else who can. I will give no lenience for him being a former Sooner with no HC experience to speak of, though. He will held to the same standard as the coaches before him.

Amen.

This isn't flipping burgers.

OU should hire Najera and have his buddy Carlos Slim build us a new arena on campus! This is a no brainer.

Well, guess that settles the McCasland to OU debate! If he was a serious contender for the OU job, why would he sign a contract extension with his current employer?

Next!

Could be a security blanket to parlay into a larger contract with a bigger university. Seems especially more likely with Goodman tweeting today that he's candidate for OU.

If McCasland was high on OU’s list, I don’t think he would agree to a contact extension at UNT. Nothing about that makes sense to me. That seems to suggest he was high on every list except the one that counted: Joe C’s

This makes sense. We see this in football..hot coach negotiates contract extension, then soon takes higher profile job. When they negotiate the extension, they're really negotiating terms of the buyout with the current school, and raising the ante for the hiring school.

In McCasland's case, he's probably also talking to Texas Tech. Not sure if OU wants to get in a bidding war with Tech for a basketball coach. More importantly, OU doesn't want to be seen losing a bidding war to Tech.
