14-17

LMAO

Nonsense. BEFORE the season started, most people thought this was a team that if everything came together, could win 20 games or so and sneak into the Dance. Worst case, most thought we'd make the NIT.
.

LMFAO. I'm not sure even the biggest sunshine pumper thought this team was a NCAA tourney team if everything came together. Most thought that the absolute best case scenario was a NIT bid.

I think the 4 game win streak might have hurt the team in this regard. A lot of people, right or wrong, adjusted their expectations higher.

Just like a lot of people adjusted their expectations TOO LOW after the Chaminade game. It works both ways.

If the date that he joined the board it correct, he wasn't here before the season started. Most on here had OU at maybe 3 wins. They have 6 now.

I've been reading the board since the first year it was around.

Because the circumstances that we faced this year - depleted, young roster with a truckload of newcomers to D1 - made even achieving a similar record as last year a longshot and much more difficult. Given our situation coming into the year, this team has overachieved without question....

Ok and now examine the opponents (the 14 wins) and their "circumstances"....

RPI rankings/record...

Coppin State - #240 (13-13)
NC Central - #263 (11-14) in OT@home
TX Southern - #177 (18-11)
Gardner Webb - #261 (9-21)
Oral Roberts - #126 (19-15)
Sacramento St - #330 (5-21)
Central Arkansas - #340 (2-24) by 3 points@home
MD-Eastern Shore - #323 (7-21)
Texas Tech - #159 (13-18)
Colorado - #76 (18-12)
Iowa State - #130 (16-15)...OUr only road win against the Big 12's worst team
Baylor - #84 (17-12)
Oklahoma State - #63 (18-12)
Baylor - #84 (17-12)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now 10+ point losses

Kentucky -12
Virginia -18
Arkansas -10
Arizona -23
Cincinnati -10
A&M -18
Baylor -13
Texas -20
Texas -16
Mizzou -23
KSU -15
A&M -14
KU -12
Teas Tech -26
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
So we have 14 10+ point losses and only 14 wins. 10 of those 14 wins are against cream-puffs. That's not "overachieving".

The doom and gloom didn't begin until we lost to Chaminade. This board is so fickle though, it's hard to guage how most folks feel, b/c they change their mind every game. "Oh, we didn't lose by 20 to KU, Capel is great". Ridiculous. Single games cannot swing your opinion of things. Look at the entire pie. It's a stinky pie, even if one piece might taste good.

So yea, before the season, darn near the entire board thought we'd win 5 conference games. After Chaminade, that is win some of the goobers started saying things like 0 or 1 win. That was stupid. We were never in danger of winning less than 4 games. NEVER. Check past Big 12 records. That simply doesn't happen very often. And as bad as we were, I knew we weren't the worst team in the conference.

you are seriously high

Because young teams can't win games?

Tell that to the '04 Sooner team. Glad they didn't lower expectations because they were young.

In the Big 12 tournament, they lost to #11 UT by three points. At that point in the season, they started 3 true frosh and two seniors (Gilbert/Detrick). Coming off the bench was another true frosh and a sophmore. They only played 8 players, and only 6 played over 12 minutes.

If you can coach, youth you can win. Maybe not championships, but 20 games certainly isn't out of reach.

are you really comparing the 2004 roster to our current roster

I think he needs 4-5 to save his job... I don't think you can win 0-3 games in conference and keep it after last season.

It also will depend on if they are competitive... If they are getting run out of the gym all the time the pressure will grow very quickly.

funny

syphilis... syphilis....

are you sure your on the rite board bro??? this is OUhoops.com.... just fyi....

Capel did a great job in a very tough situation. People can blame him all they want but put Tiny Gallon on this team instead of Nick Thompson and we are progably finishing in the top 5 of the Big XII and heading to the dance.

Even after totally rebuilding our roster in the middle of the night we were an eyelash from being 17-14 overall and 8-9 in Big XII play (Chaminade, @OSU, Nebraska should have all been wins).

If Joe C gets rid of Capel it will just be another sad chapter in Oklahoma,

I could definitely be labeled an optimist, but after the NC Central game I only thought we would win 3 max. Doubled that so far.

Perfect example. NOW, you think the team over-achieved.

Before the season.....you predicted we'd finish 7th in the Big 12.

http://ouhoops.com/forum/showpost.php?p=218834&postcount=14

EdmondSooner thought we'd finish 8th.

http://ouhoops.com/forum/showpost.php?p=218831&postcount=11

In that same thread:

Tiny - 8th
sys - 9th
Mr. B - 9th
OULad - 10th
Capelfan52 - 10th with 6 wins

That was in July.

In November, was this thread:

http://ouhoops.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17395&highlight=predictions

Sam - 8th
Sooner in MI - 9th
BigTime - 7th
Sooner23 - 11th
boksooner - 9th
capelfan52 - 10th
Maxpower - 8th
okcsooner83 - 11th
ITK - 11th
hoopsaustin - 10th
cheno - 10th

So even after the bad non-conference games, we still had guys picking us higher than where we finished.

Another thread:

Most everybody in that thread picked more than 14 wins overall. Some were upwards of 20.

I stand by original statement. The only people that picked less wins for this team were the ones that panicked after Chaminade. The facts are above.

You're right. I was more optimistic before I saw them play a game. As much as you want it to be, that isn't groundbreaking information you've got there.

"An eyelash from 8-9 in conference"?

That's not true. You could say maybe 7-9, but you could also turn that around and say we were "an eyelash" away from 0fer as well. Only two conference losses did we stand a chance - OSU in Stillwater and Nebraska @ home.

Your right. I was more optimistic before I saw them play a game. As much as you want it to be, that isn't groundbreaking information you've got there.

It shows, all three threads together show, that very, VERY few fans picked us to finish worse than we did. They either nailed it pretty close, or greater than 50% of them expected more.

The word "overachieved" should be banished from this board for the next few months. Ridiculous.

I guess some people just make it up as they go.

My facts are below. I don't care to "tally" them, but it's clear that only a couple of fans predicted worse than where we ended up. Most of the rest either nailed it, or expected more.

I did think there were more fans saying the Dance wasn't out of the question. I didn't see many of those in the threads, but if you are predicting OU in the 6-8 range, you are saying the Dance is within reach. If you are predicting 20 wins, you are saying the Dance was within reach.

So you did research to find that some of the posters predicted a better finish because they are fans. Well done.
