Castiglione working to save Big 12

Not if you renegotiate the Big 12 TV package and create a Big 12 network like the Big 10 has done. Add TCU, Houston to get back to 12 then maybe even look at 4 more teams to get to 16. That conference would be better than anything the Pac-16 could put together without raiding the Big 12.

Agreed.

I can't get over this on the potential market front:

Big 12 - 38.7 million
SEC - 56.6 million
Big 10 - 68.6 million
Pac 10 - 57.5 million

This is the deal breaker in my opinion...just not enough population in the Big 12 states. So you will never get as the TV/Cable network revenue that the other major conference players get.

From an OU/Texas perspective how do you get past that?

KU is getting screwed in conference realignment. They are a great basketball property/brand. I think they would make a better addition to the Pac 10 than either OSU and particularly TT...but politics drive that both OSU and TT get in front of KU (not to mention KU would have pressure to take KSU along).

Even if a new Big 12 deal is negotiated, the deal will still fall substantially short comparative to what the deal would bring should the hypothetical Pac 16 Conference come to fruition. I'm pretty sure that's the angle each university is looking at when contemplating moving out west.

And regarding the Big 12 network, it has to promise to come close to replicating the Big 10 network for Texas to even consider obliging. Right now I believe 9 schools have to vote for a Big 12 network to come to life (obviously voting revisions will be altered with Nebraska & Colorado leaving), so its not a guarantee that Texas, or the other schools will vote for this network to take place.

I wanna go to the SEC. I think that conference prepares teams better for their bowl games (or playoffs!!)

In the current Big 12 and Pac-10 of last year, the Pac-10 states had roughly 52 million people and the Big 12 had roughly 48 million. Basically, no difference. Then throw in the fact, the Pac-10 will ALWAYS get the worst deal because of the time zone. It's the worst time zone for primetime TV.
The Big 12 just got beat to the punch. If the Big 12 would have been adding 4 to get to 16 BEFORE the Pac-10 it would have been much more attractive to TV.

Had but if the Big 12 was on the offensive and went to 16 teams it would be a better TV deal than the west coast. The Big 12 was just slow to react.
And the Pac 10 keeps talking about a cable network as well but they don't have one. It's all a hope. No different if the Big 12 would toss it around.

If the Big 12 expands to 16, it won't be better then if the 6 teams from the Big 12 leave and join this Pac 16. 8 of the 20 largest TV markets would cover locations of the Pac 16.

The Pac 16's deal would be substantially higher.

I realize that. I meant if the Big 12 would have stayed together. The Big 12 just got beat to the punch. The Big 12 was much more attractive than the Pac-10 before all this started.

Confused... You think the Big 12 remaining intact, and expanding 4 more teams (which would have more than likely added little-to-none market value), would have had a better TV deal than this hypothetical Pac 16?

If that's what you're saying, I still disagree. The new-look Pac 16 still would have garnered a better deal.

Why? The old Big 12 had essentially the same population of the states as the Pac-10. The Big 12 had the benefit of better time zone to garner primetime national dollars. Look at the Pac-10 TV contracts now...they suck on the national level. The Pac-10 just was smarter than the Big 12 and beat the Big 12 to the punch.

Its not just my opinion, the consensus is that the new-look Pac 16 presents a vast amount of more potential then an expanded Big 12 could have. But to answer your question, I think its in large part because the quantity of top 20 TV markets is significantly greater in this new-look Pac 16, regardless of what logical expansions the Big 12 would have made.

It's not actually a big difference but it is a difference. Now it'll be roughly 70-80 million fans in the new PAC whatever that's a lot more viable for a TV network than either was before.

You're right, the previous numbers I saw were inaccurate. It's not as much of a difference as I previously mentioned.

But like you said, the new conference would present a population substantially larger than any expansion the Big 12 could have done.

bottom line is the Big 12 was asleep at the wheel.

The Big 10 network having success changed the ball game. If the Big 10 networke didn't work out none of this is happening. The Big 12(mostly Texas) didn't see a Big 12 network really working out. And they might have been right at that time. The chances of even the Big 10 network working out weren't that big.
