Thanks to some backroom negotiating from Bud Wilkinson, Oklahoma A&M was invited to join (or re-join if you're really historical) the Big 7 Conference in the fall of 1958, transforming the league into the Big 8. 61 years later, we the Sooners wrapped up another regular-season sweep of the so-called basketball school.
Using the data provided by our good friends at Soonerstats, I decided to do a little digging into the numbers. Long story short, the Aggies owned our butts in the days of JFK and the Great Society, but the series has been ours since the Viet Cong turned Tet into an Offensive.
REGULAR SEASON SWEEPS:
OU - 22
('66, '68, '71, '72, '73, '78, '79, '82, '83, '84, '85, '88, '90, '99, '06, '08, '09, '14, '15, '16, '19, '24)
OSU - 11
('61, '62, '64, '65, '81, '94, '98, '04, '17, '21, '23)
Of these sweeps, several have been of the SUPER variety. I coined this term mere moments ago to indicate a year in which either the Sooners or Aggies added a victory in the Big 8/12 Holiday/Postseason Tournament to make a perfect 3-0 record for the slate.
SUPER SWEEPS:
OU - 4
('66, '73, '85, '15)
OSU - 2
('65, '23)
The Aggies are a football school now. Just ask them, they'll tell you. But I don't think our domination of them on the hardwood can be overstated. I'll give them credit, they took advantage of the opportunity Eddie Sutton's cash-filled envelope provided. He was not knocking down Stillwater's door from Lexington before the Chris Mills fiasco went Chernobyl all over the bluegrass.
I sure do like sweeping them. And I LOVE winning in Stillwater. I was present for sweep-cappers in both 2015 and 2016. How sweet it was!
EDIT: Updated the OT post while basking in another Sooner Sweep of the Aggies. Patent pending.
