Former Sooners

Manek is only playing the four at UNC. Bacott returning all ACC 5 man is the 5. They have another kid Garcia (6-11") who transferred to UNC from Marquette (Mcdonalds all-american) that plays the 4 and 5. When he and Manek are on the court together the Marquette kid plays the 5.

he played a ton of 5 ... more than half of his min i would guess ..

in the preseason most UNC reporters though manek and stone(i think) were fighting for the starting spot at the 5 .. and in the exhibition game manek didn't start

for game one they just went ahead and started both of them

Hmm, interesting. Good for him. I don’t see him playing the 5 in the nba off that’s his goal.

Hope he does well.

Great thread!
I like keeping up with the guys who were once on our roster …

I’m pretty impressed with these guys. Nice to see them showing out elsewhere. That’s a lot of talent escaped..

I’m glad folks are enjoying the thread. With so many guys leaving after last season, I figured it would be interesting to keep tabs on. It also makes me wonder what might have happened last season if we hadn’t had the Covid issues that seemed to knock us off stride a bit. We would have had a great shot of at least making the Sweet 16 if we had just won a couple more games in February.

O'Garro did not play in the first San Jose St game last night

Williams had 31 8 and 4 ast 3 steals in his second game at Wake
Manek didn't start but had 14 and 8 with 2 blocks off the bench
Kuath had 0 points 4 boards

Anyone have any insight as to why so many of our players left. I know a coaching change often leads to transfers but we had way more than usual.

No insight but I think it’s a combination of the coaching change, immediate eligibility (which didn’t exist in the past), and the fact three of the guys who left were super seniors who probably felt like a change was in order.

yes to all

Trey- although i think he can play here. Kid moved back closer to home and wide open offense. lower level school.

Kur- Doesnt really fit here with this offense. start fresh somewhere else.

Manek- How could you turn down UNC? He was a punching boy here for many and believe it or not. that takes a toll on kids. He was "wanted" somewhere else and its pretty dang cool to be wanted by UNC from small town Harrah.

Merritt- cant play here

Williams- not really sure. fresh start. closer to home maybe?

Ogarro- not ou level

Vic- Hartman croot.

Harmon- Interesting note. I spoke to a current players parent and was told Harmon wanted to stay but his parents made him leave for Oregon. If i remember correctly, porter was sure he was coming back from conversations with DH, then it came out that he was looking if NBA didnt work out.

It's too bad about Harmon. I really think He would fit in with Moser's mindset on offense and defense.

The whole "fresh start" some guys were reportedly looking for -- doesn't a new coaching staff qualify? I guess not.

And I wonder what in the world was behind Harmon's parents insisting he leave OU. I was never a good at sports, nor were any of my siblings, so my folks never faced the challenge of parenting an elite athlete, but I can guarantee they never would have interfered in that way. They'd have offered guidance, of course, but in the end, the decision would have been mine.

It's amazing how many parents think if the kid is at a different program he will be a pro vs. the one he has been playing. Harmon's family thought he was one and done. He has been a very good player but at best will be a rotation guy in the league. My guess is probably be lucky to be a two way player.
Manek was a punching boy for the fans. He also was to himself. Wish he had stayed but it was probably best for his mental health to be elsewhere and NC is a great place.

Manek's last season with COVID and lung injury (IIRC) was a nightmare. Good to have a new environment and reset for him.

Kur Kuath is now with Marquette and they just defeated #10 Illinois, 67-66.

Kur started and had:
7 points
5 rebounds
2 steals
5 blocks (!)

His defense really dominated late and Illinois went the final 5 and a half minutes without a field goal.

Careful now, all those who preach on the board that rim protection doesn’t matter will be very angry at you for praising Kur for making what was obviously a huge impact on that game. :)

That's what happens when you have a great head coach. Hope that guy never joins our conference.
