Regarding UCF's game against Penn: citing one loss proves nothing. UCF is 90th in Realtime RPI -- not great, not terrible -- but here's some context: That's 55 spots better than TCU, 60 spots better than ISU and 68 spots better than KSU. So belittling our win over UCF while also touting our supposed inferiority to every other Big 12 team doesn't really gibe.
As for our game with UCF, both teams finished 20 points below their season average. Why? The officiating was absurdly lax (both ways). If the officials swallow their whistles for the whole game, as they did in that game, the game's going to be a defensive grind and low-scoring nine times out of ten. OU held UCF to their lowest point total of the season (by a margin of 15 points), so if you're going to blame OU for its low point total, you have to give the Sooners credit for UCF's even lower point total.
Every season, too many posters refuse to dig below the surface even a little bit. It's easier just to rag on the team and not do any analysis at all. As with the last few seasons, we again have faced a very tough schedule so far -- 15th in the country -- and of course, it's only going to get tougher. But if you're unwilling to at least consider the schedule when critiquing the team, you're being unfair.
I'm not thrilled with the team's recent play, but they played better than this earlier in the season, so which is the real team? I don't know, and neither do you. I hope we're just in a slump -- it remains to be seen. But most of the teams in the Big 12 have yet to live up to expectations so far, and to insist otherwise is either nonsense or ignorance.
