Is capel feeling any heat?

The poster said that Capel should have won a title with Blake. I responded by pointing out that numerous STAR CALIBER players did not win NCAA titles. A few were 4 yr players even. To say that Capel should have won it all, when NC had a roster that was light years ahead of ours is just more Capel bashing..... The list that I compiled had some decent coaches on it. You can spin it however you want, but the bottom line is that NONE of the great players listed ever won a title, which by the way is not an indictment of their coaches on my part, but more an indication of how hard it is to win an NCAA title in any sport......

I see what you are saying, however UNC had a light years better coaching staff. OU by far had the best player on the court.

I will bet anyone that by the time BG is done he will be one of the best 10 to ever play the game. He will be mentioned in the same breath as players like Jordan, magic, wilt, bird, Lebron, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Patrick Ewing. All of these players except bird and Lebron won NC's.

We had enough talent with Blake to win the NC had we been better coached. Our defense was putrid and and our offense other than get the ball to Blake was just as bad.

I like how fans are now trying to sabotage the basketball program by starting a mutiny. Be careful what you wish for.

How much worse can it get? When does Capel start to get some blame for fielding a team this bad his 5th year on the job? We just broke a 80 year old record for conference losses in a row, and we are getting blown out by any decent team we play. We are having to fight with Tech for last place in the league. I really dont see how it can get much worse then it is right now, I never thought I would see OU be this bad.

Neither Wilt nor Olajuewan won titles They did come in second.

A better argument would be no final fours, no conference championships, no conference tournament championships

I think we need to chill a little bit on this annointing Blake as one of the greatest players in NBA history based on half of an NBA regular season.

Are you freaking kidding me? That UNC team that beat us had 5 NBA players on it (that we know of so far, some are still in college) and had 3 1st round NBA draft picks.

I'm less worried about finding a coach who will win us a national title and more worried about one who will keep us relevant and in the NCAA tourney picture every year.

What is Capel's buyout anyway? If we lose Tuesday and this thing really starts heading for 0-16 I think the pressure is going to be heavy on Joe C. to do something.

I don't know how BOB is doing it, but he has somehow managed to make my quotes his, and his quotes mine....:D:D

But when you look at the thread it has me saying what BOB said, and vice versa. Must be a Capel Hater Jedi Mind Trick.....:clap:D;)

Sorry mizzy, I knew it wasn't you that said it, but I couldn't figure out why it kept coming up with your name in the quote

Yeah, because it just takes someone like Blake to win a NC.

Clown statement.
It was not a clown statement, and I take offense to that. That Blake team had Willie Warren who is in the NBA and was the National Freshman Player of the year. Also Taylor played in the NBA, so that was 3 NBA ballers on that team.

After about 5 years it is apparent that Capel can't coach. The players look lost. They looked lost back then but Blake covered much of it up.

We couldn't even bring the ball up the court against any kind of full court press. If we break UNC press enough that they lay off, we win that game. Hansboro was exposed for what he was. We knew AJ wasn't a great ball handler yet the only other option Capel brings in for keeps is Leary. Maze or Neysmith would have helped, but Capel can't motivate players to do what it takes to stay on the team. Two more defect this year before playing a single minute.

So Capel can't keep enough players and can't coach the ones that stay...

The '88 team should have won the title too, is that a clown statement?

And if healthy the 2002 team wins it all, im not sure what you are getting at with the last statement or how it applies here

I guess it doesn't apply except in that, that '88 team was the best in the country that year and should have won the title. I think it was Renolds, the OU hating ref that cost us that game.

Some of you people are just nuts! OU Basketball is in a terrible place but really? Those donors who buy all the expensive tickets and don't care enough to go to the game are going to turn the heat up? Really? They don't care! If they cared they'd get someone in their seats for games. I like Jeff a lot as a person. That being said I think he has taken the program into the dumper. Bad luck or not he is the man in charge and has to be responsible. However, let's not be crazy here. He did take us to the Elite 8. Blake may have been a big reason but Jeff recruited him and got him to OU. This current team is a team of role players mainly. Cam might be the exception. If Jeff can add some size (Goff and Osby) who can play and he can get a guard or two who can shoot the basketball, he and the OU program will be fine. Our main problem in games we have struggled in is getting the ball in the hole. Our defense isn't great but I think it gets worse as this young team keeps missing shots. I say give him another year and let's see if he can dig out of this. There are absolutely no guarantees a new coach would do better. There is actually a chance is could get way worse before it gets better.

If he's not feeling any heat at what point in the season does he start to feel the heat?

I emailed berry tramel earlier this last week to ask when we could expect a taco bell article about Capel? I also asked when the press would start placing the heat on Capel and he responded with a one word response: "soon".

Not sure if this means we will see a taco bell article about capel soon or if the press will start turning up the heat soon.

If we continue to lose and dont win a conference game or only win one I don't see how Joe can let him come back but those in the know claim he is coming back next year for sure. When does Joe start feeling heat to make a change?

What is a taco bell article?

What is a taco bell article?

I answered the question previously in the thread:

Back in the day of John Blake, berry tramel wrote an editorial that basically stated John was not even qualified to manage a taco bell but was handed the best football program of the previous 50 years.

Obviously, Jeff is far more qualified than john was, and the OU basketball program is not as highly regarded as it's football program.

So my question "how long until Berry writes another taco bell article (about Jeff)" was more meant to say how long until Berry, or other local journalists write articles stating Jeff is in over his head.

The big donors know we have a basketball program? That's news to me.

Seriously, the donor seats are 75% empty for most games whether we're good or bad. The "heat" probably isn't going to come from them.

I am not a big donor, but i donate. I let my season tickets go that i had has since David Little and Bo Overton this year. They were great seats, but i had no interest is driving to Norman to watch crap. So I let my money/tickets do my talking. I think others have as well since the arena is about 75% empty now. I wanted the coach Misery hired instead of Capel. I was hacked he couldn't keep Scottie Reynolds, but I was on the Capel bandwagon when he recruited Blake and WW. Last year guys leave after one season, this year they leave before playing a game. The players look lost on the court. We have AV guys as asst. coaches.

I was hacked that the year we went to the great 8 that we were so horrible at breaking a full court press. I blamed it on the players then. Now i blame it on Capel. A decent coach would have won a National Championship with Blake.

So we have a coach that can recruit and do nothing else even up to average. I would like to demote him (to prevent some player transfers and for future recruiting) and hire a new HC, but that would prolly be unprecendented.

I don't know what Joe will do. I doubt he would offer the amount of money it would take to get a proven coach in here, so i suspect he will hire someone i have never heard of.

so after one bad season .. were we had a very talented roster .. you dropped your tickets? less than a year from a elite 8 run? ...

if so then you are not a fan that OU needs at all

I can't speak for the poster, but had I been a season ticket holder last year, it would have been hard to renew this year. I say that not just because of probable win/loss record, but because of how bad last year was. It almost sucked all the life out of my OU basketball interest.

Offcourt issues (shoplifting), 3 highly recruited jackwagon's playing for themselves, very little effort, NCAA violations, etc., and it was all I could do to be excited for basketball this year. Thank goodness the team this year plays with some heart and that's gotten me more interested than I figured to be at the conclusion of last year, but I'm still a long way from being at the excitement level of 1977 - 2007.

I just can't subscribe to the, "Don't go to the games" style of protest. In the end it might force a change, and it might not.

Ultimately, the only thing your sure to accomplish is to give our players less of a home court advantage than the other teams in the conference. I think that sucks.

But, it's certainly your right.
