Is Frank Haith to MU really a bad hire?

Miami is one of the worst high-major basketball jobs in the United States. Its like taking over at Nebraska. They just dont give a crap about basketball there.

Now, coming out of Texas he was a pretty big name and was known as an elite recruiter. He will now return to this part of the country, and I suspect he could do pretty well.

I mean, the guy was not a total failure at UM. That job sucks. Its probably a worse job than Nebraska. They just brought basketball back to the school in the late 1980's, lol.

23-11
19-13
20-13
21-14

Those are the last 4 seasons for Miami.

-Has more postseason wins than any other coach in Miami men's basketball history. (that tells you about the program)
-Has more post-season appearances than any other coach in school history.
-In 2009-10, Haith led the Hurricanes to a 15-1 start for just the second time in program history and the first since 1959-60.
-Haith then guided Miami into the ACC Tournament semifinals for the first time in program history.
-Opened the 2008-09 season ranked among the nation's Top 25 in both preseason polls for just the second time in UM history.
-With that NCAA Tournament appearance in 2008, Haith became the first coach in Miami history to take UM to the postseason in three of his first four seasons at the helm -- and has since become the only coach in program history to take the Hurricanes to the postseason in four of his first five seasons.

I think, being such a big name at Texas, that he made a mistake going to the biggest dump of a basketball program in the nation.

I bet (assuming all the players stay) that he wins 25 games next season, and recruits well going forward.

It looks bad right now, but you could argue that he was the best coach in the history of Miami basketball. Its just a dump program.

It's not a bad hire. It's an appropriate hire for Missouri. Expectations just got way out of line for what Missouri really is which is a middle tier program.

The Miami job is not nearly as bad as you make it out to be. They have had some success. Certainly more success than Nebraska.

But you can't expect them to complete with the Miami Heat without some type of gimmick.

Based on how ethically diverse Miami is, Shaka Smart could be that gimmick. I could see him doing really well there, all things considered.

Frank Haith (in 7 years @ Miami) - 129-101
Perry Clark & Leonard Hamilton (7 years prior to Haith) - 129-82

Frank Haith's 7 year record at Miami: 129-101
Miami's record previous 7 years: 129-82

Edit: Beat me to it

First off, its not the worst job in the country. I would argue there are a couple of places in the SEC alone that are harder to generate and maintain success.

With that being said, compared to other candidates out there (Shaka, Jacobsen, etc), this is a very underwhelming hire for Mizzou. No winning record in conference play in 7 seasons? Pretty hard to justify those results.

1 NCAA appearance in 7 years. Yes, it's a pretty awful hire. Obviously they struck out big time.

Leonard Hamilton's last 3 years at Miami

Code:
1997–1998	Miami (FL)	18–10	11–7	2nd	NCAA 1st Round
1998–1999	Miami (FL)	23–7	15–3	2nd	NCAA 2nd Round
1999–2000	Miami (FL)	23–11	13–3	T–1st	NCAA Sweet Sixteen

Haith has only made one NCAA.

Apples & Oranges fellas. They changed conferences.

True, but was the 2003-2004 Big East tougher than the 2010-2011 ACC? I'd have to look thoroughly but I'd say this year's ACC was worse.

check his non conference vs conference record and then get back to me

turrrible hire

He has been to the post-season more than any coach in the history of the school, and has more post-season wins than any coach in the history of the school. That tells you what a dump that program is.

Correct.

Miami is in the same category as Auburn, Nebraska, Oregon State, Ole Miss, etc in terms of being a terrible basketball school.

A lot of people on this forum and around the conference recognize that Doc Sadler at NU is a good basketball coach, yet his results dont indicate that. It's because he won nearly 30 games at UTEP and took the first BCS job that came his way. He made the same mistake Frank Haith did. He should have stayed with UTEP, continued to win, and taken a better job than Nebraska.

I am willing to take a bet that Missouri wins at least 22 games in his first season and they make the NCAA Tournament, assuming the current roster returns.

Anyone think he won't do that in his first year?

The Big East was not the big basketball power it is now back in the late 90s. They only became fully committed to hoops when Miami, Va Tech and Boston College dumped them for the ACC.

Anyway, glad OU didn't hire Frank Haith. ha ha ha ha

Considering the team that is potentially returning, winning 22 games with that roster is not something to brag about. Along with "post season victories" considering that all but one of those wins were in the NIT (which I find almost worthless....not completely if it can springboard the next year)
