March Madness and Covid-19

Arizona is not looking good. Record number of deaths reported today, 113.
7 day rolling average for deaths hit a record high today.

3,653 new cases, up 50% from a week ago with an incredible 33% positivity rate.

Might have some validity if we continued life as usual this year and still had those numbers. We certainly haven't continued life as usual, though. Way too many variables changed. In the short team at least, it's much harder to die if you don't leave your house. The things that reduce COVID transmission also reduce transmission of a lot of other infectious diseases. If fewer people drive, fewer people die secondary to MVAs.

We'd need to see the breakdown. I agree that automobile accident fatalities would have decreased, but deaths from other diseases like cancer, the flu, and whatever else wouldn't have. I'm not sure things like murder/homicide would go down. I would think domestic assault deaths might have went up.

More info would be needed, but if deaths from other diseases fell WAY off their historic rate, I would think my original point would have some merit.

Texas has cancelled this year's state fair due to the coronavirus. I would say this leaves the OU/Texas game up in the air.

The Fair being cancelled only impacts the location of a possible OU/UT game. They won't cancel the game b/c of the Fair, but they may move it to Jerry World. I'd be fine with that. Make it a night game too.

So.....question about the search for a CV vaccine. Do all of these labs in all of these countries share data? Are they working together? Unfortunately I envision very little sharing of info, which means A LOT of duplicated efforts.

The fair being cancelled does influence whether the game will be played because of the public perception. Of course at this point I have serious doubts about there even being a college football season.

That would suck, royally, if we have no football or basketball this year.

Honestly, I don’t think we’ll play this year. If we do start a season, I expect it to get cancelled before we even get to October.

Agreed on cancer.

Whole-heartedly disagree on influenza - as I said earlier, COVID precautions work for many infectious diseases and aren't specific to just COVID. If influenza infections DON'T go down this year -- that would be the surprise.

I guess I have to agree with "whatever else wouldn't have" based on the wording, but I'm not giving you credit for that.

Adding more variables. Making my argument for me.

If deaths fell way off their historic rate, that would suggest to me that historic changes happened. For example, if major parts of the globe sheltered in place for several months.

I need to get a Covid test (had direct exposure) and it is a total pain in the ass. Anyone offering rapid results has tons of people in the parking lot hours before it opens, lots of the other places are still doing the 7-10 day results which is completely asinine... A lot of these places that offer testing literally aren't answering phones in Tulsa.

This is my first direct experience with it.

I wish I could help you my friend. If it was a normal test I could do it for you, but they keep these tests tightly controlled. Good luck, I hope it turns out okay. We are seeing a surge in cases here at the VA. We've been trying to come up with a way to test massive amounts of people without exposing everyone. We've done the drive-through collecting in the past but it's just too hot now for that. My suggestion was opening the drive-through at 6am and stopping about 9 or 10. Of course people don't like to be working that early and I get it, I wouldn't want to do it either. So we are still trying to come up with a plan.

Any way to set up a line for cars? The person in the front of the car shuts there car off and goes inside. When he is done, he comes back to his car and leaves and the line moves forward.
