March Madness and Covid-19

Hearing that they are announcing a treatment today at 5 central. Trump will make the announcement. Supposed to be convalescent plasma.

Convalescent plasma is created from the blood of people who have recovered from Covid-19, and it has shown some success in two other deadly coronaviruses: MERS and SARS. It has also been used to treat flu and Ebola.

I've gone back to my normal clinical duties, and no longer need to stay on the cutting edge of COVID, but this confuses me. What does this change? We've been using convalescent plasma for months. Is there a new study being published?

Seemed to be something regarding FDA approval, but I looked it up and of course you are right, it's been being used this whole time.

We have been using CCP for months now as part of the Mayo Clinic study. Trump has pushed the FDA to approve it, so they issued an EUA even though the studies have not been completed yet. When asked if there was political pressure to approve this the head of the FDA, Stephen Hahn, refused to answer. It's still in the trial phase and I really hope it works, but this was not some breakthrough.

We’ve been using it for months as well. I’m not sure why this is breaking news. It’s been widely used all over the country since late March/early April.

Public Service Announcement!

When I had my physical, my doctor said everyone should get their flu shot as soon as they come out this year. Much to my surprise, they are already available. When a couple of people told me they had gotten theirs, I was skeptical because I thought they weren't usually available until September, at the earliest. I asked my pharmacist (CVS) today and he said they had them. So, GET YOUR FLU SHOT!

"The CDC says getting the flu vaccine in September isn’t advised because it may not be as effective during the worst of the flu season.
The body needs about 2 weeks after receiving the shot to create antibodies that can protect against influenza."

University of Alabama now has 500 positive Covid cases in first week of class.

Do they mean September is too early or too late?

Too early. Since the vaccine’s immunity period is six months, the flu season will not be over if you get your shot too early.

I was about to make the same mistake until my RN sister in another state set me straight. Now, I’ll wait until sometime in October.

BREAKING: Abbott launches $5 coronavirus test that yields results in 15 minutes, without needing any laboratory equipment. This will significantly speed testing efforts. 50 million tests a months, headed our way.

Any truth to this?

Potentially more good news if the science proves to be accurate.

As an aside, I’m encouraged by the report on Pontotoc County (where Ada is located) I follow regularly. Here’s an update on the numbers I reported several weeks ago.

Sometime in May (I believe) there were 12 confirmed cases in the county with 2 deaths. As of today the number of confirmed cases stands at 232. The good news? We’re still holding firm with 2 deaths.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I see that as a positive trend.
