March Madness and Covid-19

So, you a doc? Noticed you said in earlier post it’s over the top...
I honestly think so but why you?

I'll try to come back and explain more when I have the time...assuming this thread is even worth revisiting in a few days (my guess is it won't be). This virus is a real issue, and there are some very reasonable actions being put into action that are necessary. But we're plunging into insanity in other regards. At this rate, the economic disruption will lead to far more damage than the virus itself.

It's hard to put a price or diminish the value of a human, or many, life or personal pain or turmoil due to the virus, but you might be right.

With all the cancellations and withdrawals from society, it will curtail the tremendous spread of the virus. If the doctor's and health organizations assumptions are right, spring/early summer will "hibernate" the virus until next flu season.

But as it stands, the economic impact will last at least 4-6 months, even if it is minimal.

Mark Few with some really interesting comments:
  • He and a consensus of coaches had spoken and wanted to postpone (not cancel) the tournament. Basically said take a breath and re-evaluate after another couple of weeks.
  • Also said to look at certain measures (athletes being tested and other safeguards that could be put in place) before making the final decision.
  • Said the NCAA didn't make the proper move.

I am with Few on this one. Announce a suspension and readdress it in 3-4 weeks. If nothing is changed, then you can cancel it.

Especially for the spring sports. Why outright cancel baseball and softball championshpis that are held in June, at this moment?

Yes seems drastic. You don’t think those coaches & players would wait 3-4 weeks to play? If you cancel it later because it doesn’t get better then so be it.

Came across this article. It's an epidemiological study and uses a model to project potential cases and outcomes for the US. I'm far from an alarmist and am annoyed by some hysteria we are seeing, but this did get my attention. It's a study of taking action now vs taking action a day or two or three later. It's a pretty dry read with models and regression analysis, but the last part is worth focusing on:

Very interesting. Points to why the social distancing is being implemented, why it’s important to implement without delay, and the consequences of waiting.

Like how long has this "social distancing"term been around.

Too many logistical hurdles to jump for the NCAA Tourney to happen later. Most arenas probably aren't available. They'd all have to be deep cleaned most likely. Travel. Hotels. Getting closer to bumping up against the end of the semester (finals). Risk that some states or schools are still on lock down in a month. And an even bigger risk that you try to have it, and somebody gets sick from one of the events. A LOT of moving parts.

That said, I tend to agree on baseball/softball. Those announcements probably could have waited.

I believe the term is new but the concept has been around for a while. It has proven effective in China and Italy. If we practice social distancing we can “flatten the curve” and our resources don’t get overwhelmed as much.

I'm not putting a price on human lives. People die from many, many causes, and coronavirus is just a tiny part of that. Economics, on the hand, plays a very large role.

"Meh, people die all the time."

I'm glad you're not my physician, if you are a physician.

Osterholm said this morning, "there are currently two types of people in America, those who have been quarantined and those who will be quarantined."

He seems to think washing of the hands is the least of our worries yet the article stormspencer linked to finds it rather important.

He said to absolutely keep doing it, but that what is in the air in your space is far more important.
He also said that the virus recovered in the nasal passages and throat on day one of infection is 1000 times more concentrated than you find in SARS which is very worrisome and might explain the high transmission rate.

"under "social distancing heading"

The linked article suggests a cough spreads the virus six feet which then falls to the ground and does not infect other individuals which makes it seem that just exhaling doesn't contaminate people. Seems a bit confusing.

That article seems to discount aerosol transmission, which doesn't jive with the evidence on the ground of a RO of about 3 for Covid-19.

Seems to me if you are in an enclosed area, which has many people, your greatest risk is through air born contamination, but if you enter a supermarket, for example, which has all of 5 people in it, then the greatest risk is through the physical contact of surfaces. If and when I go to the market I will do it very early upon opening when the market is bare. And on a side note, for years I have been using my knuckles to press buttons on the point of sale terminals as opposed to the using of the fingertips.

This thread hasn’t had anything to do with March Madness for several pages.
