March Madness and Covid-19

I was just looking over the brackets and I was wondering how the novel coronavirus Covid-19 might affect the NCAA basketball tournament.

Washington state is the epicenter for the virus in the United States, but every day cases are popping up all over, and I guarantee you that there are more cases than are publicly known because we are inexplicably not instituting widespread testing yet!

Just looking at the bracket, I see that first round games are set to be played in Spokane Washington. Are the powers that be really going to want teams and fans from all over the country to congregate in Spokane? Also, Florida is a hotspot for the virus and games are scheduled to be played in Tampa. In a couple of weeks, the virus will be more widespread, maybe by a couple of magnitudes, than it is now. There may be rumblings about moving/canceling games and/or playing games in empty arenas.

This is scary stuff and much bigger than basketball.

My original post.... we’ve come a long way since then

Where is the joke about Kruger not making the NCAA tourney in 2020?

Mark Few with some really interesting comments:
  • He and a consensus of coaches had spoken and wanted to postpone (not cancel) the tournament. Basically said take a breath and re-evaluate after another couple of weeks.
  • Also said to look at certain measures (athletes being tested and other safeguards that could be put in place) before making the final decision.
  • Said the NCAA didn't make the proper move.

I'm guessing every coach who believes his team has a legit chance to cut down the nets is going to be in favor of a postponement as opposed to an outright cancellation. While I do feel for the players, there are obviously much larger implications.

Since there are not going to be any sports for the foreseeable future, I can recommend some books for those who are inclined to read:

Outlander series - Time travel, romance, Scotland, American Revolutionary war in 9 HUGE books.

The Chronicles of St. Marys - Time travel and a very funny writer. The author is Jodi Taylor. There are 10 novels and several short stories.

Longmire books by Craig Johnson - modern day western sheriff set in Wyoming.

If you like non-fiction, google Jimmy Stewart and WWII. There are a couple of really good books about Jimmy's Stewart's wartime service.

Enjoy!!

I can see that but thinking about other events that are booked for places... they could do the NIT deal and give higher teams home games....

I know Zac brown canceled about 15 dates... til late May. KC being one of them...👎

Or Stephen King...The Stand.... course that’s a little too close to home...🥴

Man, this is so sad. Depressing. And yes, I think it’s OK to be super bummed about a basketball tournament and it doesn’t mean you don’t care about human lives. I also don’t think this was the “wrong” move— if nothing else, the tone and optics just aren’t right. I do agree with Mark Few. I think the NCAA should have moved ahead with a bracket and then said they would re-evaluate over the coming weeks. See how the events progressed across the world and see if there is a solution to holding the Tourney at a later date— it would take some real circus tricks, but I would have hit pause and taken a deep breath. That said, I’m not “bashing” them for this. Nothing is easy right now.

Bottom line, I’m just sad. This absolutely sucks. I’m not mad at anyone though.

This thread is damaging my faith humanity.

It’s nothing new, I work with & know people who spout the same crap. I just try to state facts & let them rant & change the subject.

Well said on all fronts. This thing has changed so rapidly that there is no way to know for certain how long it will take to contain it. I don't see how it could have hurt to announce the bracket and then wait for at least a couple weeks to see if it was feasible to try to play it. I'm sure there are plenty of factors that went into the decision that the public will never be aware of, but I agree with Few. It seems especially rash to cancel all spring sports. The College World Series isn't till late June -- who is to say things won't be much better far before then. Seems like it would be worth waiting to see if a reduced schedule could still be played.

Too close to home is right! I read “The Stand” a long time ago. Great book that holds your attention and makes you think. It would also give the average reader nightmares right now. Randall Flagg is a scary dude!

They remade the series and it will be available on CBS all-access

Season 3 of Ozark comes out in a couple of weeks on Netflix. That'll help.
