March Madness and Covid-19

The main thing was the tiny size of the study. 24 people. But also, 3 of the people in the control group got sent to ICU or died and they weren’t included in the final numbers. They should have scrapped the whole thing at that point.

Until we get a viable vaccine we need all the help we can get thus it doesn't need to be an "end all cure." There are people who are in desperate need of help.

what we need FIRST is for everyone to stay the F at home. buy food and stay at home. period. people in emergent jobs should wear PPE's and everyone else stay home. doesn't matter if it will kill you individually or not - we need to halt it's advance and that's how you do it. pointing to numbers and other BS about its' morbidity is hogwash when we can't stop it because of reinfection.

Sure, it might not kill you the first time but what about the third time after the entire economy has collapsed? This virus thrives on people defiantly doing their own thing because they don't think it's serious enough. We should all just consider it 100% deadly and stay in the house until we eradicate it. close travel, close businesses, and take the losses until we stop it. Thats what china realized also.

I can’t disagree with this at all. Well said

I agree. Also, we may need to do this for most of the next 14-18 months, until a working vaccine is available for the entire population.

There is zero chance that can happen. None. If nobody is going to work, how is there going to be food and other daily use items? Because there isn't a 12-18 month stock of it now. 12-18 months of basically no economy? Complete non-starter as far as options go. Zero chance. We'll be lucky to "keep people home" for 2 months. Very lucky.

I dont think so. You may be right, but I tend to side with the chinese strategy. you clamp down, close everything, and take cleaning measures. then with a new, clean, wary attitude and environment you start back up again. we can isolate past its' life and eradicate it. provided everyone complies. thats the problem - burger kingers. people that are dead set on having it their way. unfortunately America is chock full of those.

I am not going as far as saying not allowing people to go to work, like in SF, needs to be done across the country, but more restricitve measures may be needed than what we are dealing with right now, at least for parts of the country.

And I agree, these may be needed for months, not a few weeks. For those that feel there is "no way" the American public will go for this, I posted something similar on TOS a couple of days ago.

We have become such a soft, spoiled society in the 21st century. As cool called it, the burger kingers, that wants it our way, or no way. We are complaining that we have to spend more time in home with our families, can't watch an NBA game, can't sit down inside at a Chick-fil-A, or can't go party at SXSW or Coachella. And if we do this for more than a couple or few months, Americans will revolt against the government. We, myself included at times, whine most not about the fierceness of the virus or economic damage, but about the inconveniences and it better not last long, like it is a TV program we can turn off if we don't like it.

Yet just a generation ago, 15% of the country, our grandfathers and fathers, went across the ocean to fight a war that would last 4 years, many drafted/forced to go. Those at home had to give up common household items, forced into rationing to help produce supplies for the war effort. Families at home also were drafted, but into the labor force to help manufacture and produce items for our soldiers' defense. In the meantime, there were curfews on the West Coast, and minority groups were even rounded up and held. This effort and measures were in place for four years. Four freakin' years, not four months or maybe 14 months.

Perspective folks.

you do realize drafted into the labor force is way different than everyone stay home and do nothing, right? As in we will still need a labor force
I am not sure your point as I never conflated the two items you mention. My first sentence started by saying "I am not going as far as saying not allowing people to go to work, like in SF, needs to be done across the country"

My point about being drafted into a labor force is the sacrifice that Americans and families made. Being drafted means you are being forced by the government, a sacrifice of something you wouldn't do as a routine.

Really confused as to how, from the entire message about how little of a sacrifice we are really being asked to do, all you got was we still need a labor force and a draft isn't liking staying home.

Just beautiful. I'll help you with the putting stroke later.

My response was in response to cool, who, unless I misread, basically said stay home and not work. Basically a complete quarantine for over a year. THAT is what I said there is zero chance of happening.

The only place that has done that so far is the Bay area, and with all the tech jobs, financial services, and professional jobs, most of them can work remotely.

NYC and DeBalasio want to do it and so far Cuomo won't approve it as he knows the ramifications as you alluded to.

I agree though, a complete shutdown of businesses won't happen

I never said a year. I'm thinking 2 months will do it.

A message heard around the world
from Singapore to Rome.
Our fate's at stake, don't circulate
just stay the f*ck at home.

I know we all have different jobs
some sing ... some polish chrome.
"Emergent task?" is all we ask
else stay the f*ck at home.

Food and health excepted
but that's no permit to roam.
The grocery store and nothing more
then stay the f*ck at home.

"Well I won't die" some youth decry
"I dream of the ocean foam".
thoughts of others? friends or brothers?
stay the f*ck at home!

A couple months should be enough
then seek the pines and emerald brome
but still the vow we need for now
is stay the f*ck at home.

Your poetic words brought a tear to me eye lol

As long as I don't have to pay my mortgage, I'm all for it. However, if I am expected to still pay my bills, then there is a ZERO PERCENT chance of getting anyone on board with an extended quarantine.

Agreed, can't happen. And it won't need to. I think they will find a therapy before a vaccine is available, potentially even from an existing drug... I don't know that it will be this medication they are talking about today, but I think something will become available to treat it effectively. The entire world is researching this at the same time, the best of every country.... They will get a therapy.

Agreed. The quickest way to put a band-aid on this (until a vaccine is made available) is from an existing drug or modifying an existing drug.
