MBB TPT2 TRANSFER PORTAL THREAD 2

If you look at Hugley not last year, but the year before, how is he not a top 3 portal recruit? The dude was insanely productive in the ACC. If he is healthy and in that form I don't see why he can't be 1st team all league, or 2nd team all league.

Am I missing something here?

Because there are dozens of great players who were in the portal. Guys who put up even better numbers, in better leagues, and who are far more athletic. He should be good, if healthy, but he isn’t one of the best players in the country.

I think Hugley is being discounted for his injury/health risk. I don’t have a problem with ranking him lower (best ability is avail-ability). I really hope he stays healthy at ou because he could be a big time player again.

I think he is being discounted because it was only one year, for a bad team, in what isn't the old, strong, ACC.

I'm not saying he can't be a really good player, but he's far from a sure thing.

No player is ever a sure thing. Emoni Bates was a wash at Memphis and everyone thought he was the next big thing. The ACC the last couple of year may not have been the best conference but lets not pretend it is the old Big East. In 2022 5 ACC teams went to the NCAA tourney and they had half the Final Four teams. Hugley averaged 15 ppg that season in the ACC.

I am not attacking you but why is every post pessimistic? Even with positive stuff you are pessimistic. Are you that way with everything? or just OU basketball?

After the last two years it's difficult to not be skeptical

I'll give you this year.....but last year I thought we should have been in the tournament. I'm willing to see how next year goes.....if it goes like this year then I will be on board with you guys.

Not a need for OU but a damn good player

I thought the portal was closed?

Never mind, I see that he's a grad transfer so that rule doesn't apply. Carry on.

I don't disagree that it's hard not to be a little skeptical but it feels like some are just jumping all over anything they can and claiming it won't work because Moser is the coach.

Hugley is the EXACT type of big man that a lot of us have been wanting the last couple of years. A 6'9 bruiser that won't get pushed around and can do some of the pushing on his own in the paint.

Just for fun, I looked back to the UNC/Pittsburgh game in North Carolina two years ago to see how he matched up with Bacot. This was the UNC team that went to the finals and could have/should have knocked off KU in the championship game....

Final stats from Feb 16th, 2022 between Pitt (11-16) and UNC (18-8) at the time:

Bacot- 7 pts 8 rbs in 26 mins
Hugley- 18 pts 5 rbs in 27 mins

Against a MUCH better overall UNC team, Hugley and Pitt went into UNC late in the season and WON 76-67.

Obviously it wasn't all Hugley, but he clearly had an impact on the game on both ends of the floor.

Is he a SURE thing? Of course not and as the other poster said, none of them are. But he brings something to OU that they haven't had in a while and is the type of guy that I am for sure and I'm sure everyone else is to, is tired of seeing other teams bring to the floor and beating OU up.

I don't know how the new team will look come September, but I do know I'm excited to see a more athletic team that can attack and at least have one guy that just doesn't flat get pushed around like a rag doll all game and complain :)

I'd say the one caveat is that this time last year, people absolutely felt we would be more athletic with Bam, Los, and Oweh. Moser himself spent the fall talking about how last year's team would run more. Cooper is clearly a great athlete. I don't know that any of the other newcomers have athleticism that will stand out in the Big 12.

I guess what I should have said was "compared to OU's team last year". I don't think it will be hard to notice that guys like Darthard, Soares and McCollum bring more athleticism to the court than Cortes, Noland (athletic but way out of shape in my opinion) and Jacob Groves.

I feel like they will match up better to other Big 12 teams than this year's team did. Just my opinion (and hope)...

I sure hope so, and think there is a decent chance. But I'm not sure the small guards are more athletic than Cortes -- we all saw/heard lots about some of his dunks in high school, and he showed flashes at OU, but our system stifled his freedom. And Soares is probably not nearly as athletic as Bam. With both of them, the issue is whether they are good enough players for their athletic ability to really show up in games.

The thing about Soares is I'm hoping he just adds not only athletic ability off the bench with some scoring punch like Bam was supposed to but also some tougher defense. HE is the type of guy that Abd clamors that OU go after out of Juco. He averaged 15+ his two years in Juco. He averaged almost 5 his first year at Oregon and then a little more than 7 last year. My hope is that by adding him and the other two guards, that they are getting more balanced scoring to add to what is hopefully an even better more aggressive Los and Oweh on the offensive end.

Does OU have that go to guy? Not sure yet but on paper it looks like they at least have a few more options at the moment. And adding a bruiser like Hugley in the middle should only open it up that much more for those guys to attack and not be able to help off as much.

It all sounds good on paper, now they just have to get it done. ;)

Except we don't have a starting 4 and very little depth. I think we have more questions than answers at this point.

I'm totally with you. My guess is he's pretty negative about most things in life. Hugley averaged 15 & 8 for a FULL season, yet someone can still find negativity in those stats?? ACC was terrible that season, so he really didn't have that good of a season? Maybe he's actually a GOOD player?? I mean, he was a top 100 recruit coming out of HS!!

Some will go out of their way to look for the negativity! What a way to go about life.

How could anyone be negative about our recruiting!!!???!!! HOW???!!??? Lol

And the funny thing is, his post wasn't even negative. He just pointed out that his stats came on a bad team in a league worse than ours, but he also said he may turn out to be a very good player. Anyone labeling that post negative or pessimistic is reaching, to say the least.

And contrary to what some are saying, yes, there are sure things in the portal. I'm quite confident that Dickinson isn't going to get to KU and end up averaging 10 and 5.
