MBB TPT2 TRANSFER PORTAL THREAD 2

I think most colleges are way too quick with extensions. They are afraid of losing a coach to another program, so they extend and/or offer raises. Sometimes it works, but often it backfires and ends up costing you a buyout, or forcing you to keep a guy longer than you want. Usually, the extension at least follows a successful season, so I agree that it was odd to give Moser one after his first year ended in the NIT. Was there any reason to fear that we were going to lose him to a better job after one year? Why not wait and see how he does coaching in a good league for the first time in his life?

Yep, Okie Lite got very upside down with Travis Ford’s contract long after he’d worn out his welcome

Coach Moser is at best an open question right now (and the same was true after his first season). The results so far have been bad. I get that it may be too soon to make a final judgment on him, but by your own logic, any extension just deepens the financial hole the program may one day have to dig out of.

Any new coach is, in effect, on probation--We've hired you, we're paying you generously, and now it's up to you to prove you're worthy of our trust. It's not just Coach Moser who should be viewed that way. Venables should, too. So should the new soccer coach. Only when and if those coaches deliver what's expected of them--or at the very least take major, measurable steps toward achieving those goals--then an extension is a reasonable option.

I would argue against extending BV right now, and I'm more confident in him at present than I am Moser. But neither has yet seen his team deliver on the field/court. When the progress of the program is clear and established, then an extension can reasonably be considered. But until that happens, extensions just make it harder to move on from a (potentially) failed hire.

I disagree with you on extending Moser after year 1. It was a very respectable result after a coaching change (far better than the previous 2 coaches did in their 1st seasons). Last season wasn’t good enough, though. It was a disappointing year, and he wasn’t extended further.

Regardless, the point I was trying to make is that the actions of the AD are not indicative of the head coach being on the hot seat whatsoever. The fact we are not going to get our conference revenue this season is a massive factor in future financial decisions. This is why I believe Moser is here for 2 more years at least (unless something off the court happens). Alternatively I could see them making a move if a donor funded 100% of the buyouts of both coaches. Very unlikely since we can’t even get basketball donors to pony up competitive 6 figure offers for NIL.

You apparently have no idea how exaggeration can be used to make or rebut a point in argument. Your point, and that of at least one other poster, appears to be that because we didn't lose all our games by huge margins, we had a competitive season.

When you have to basically say, "hey, sometimes we got blown out, but other times, we only lost by a little, and once in a blue moon, we beat someone" in order to argue that we were competitive, it shows that you simply won't acknowledge reality. Why is it hard to just admit we had a terrible year? Same with our football fans trying to justify 6-7 by making all kinds of excuses. Just admit it was a huge failure and hope that it doesn't happen again, and acknowledge that if it does, things need to change.

There is a definite difference in being COMPETITIVE and being just trash. If I have to point that out then there is no hope. A poor season is a poor season but being competitive and not competitive is distinguishable.

It seemed we were in agreement a few pages ago about starters...

PG: Uzan
SG: McCollum
SF: Oweh
SF: Soares
PF: Hugley

I like to compare that against league competition... I started with Oklahoma State. What do you guys think?

PG: Javon Small (6'2'' 180) - Transfer from East Carolina. Started every game for ECU last year and averaged 16 points, 5.6 assists, and 4.8 rebounds per game as a sophomore.
SG: Bryce Thompson (6'6'' 194) - Transfer from Kansas. Started all 36 games for OSU last year and averaged 12 points, 3 assists, and 3 rebounds per game.
SG: John Michael-Wright (6'1'' 190) - Transfer from High Point. Started all 36 games for OSU last year and averaged 10 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists per game.
PF: Brandon Garrison (6'9'' 205) - McDonalds All-American and Oklahoma's #1 recruit out of Del City.
C: Mike Marsh (6'11'' 240) - Transfer from Jacksonville. Averaged 10.5 points and 5 rebounds per game as a sophomore last year.

I think I would take OU at every position except 4, which is pretty good considering we don't even have our starting 4 yet.

I would probably take OU, but I think Garrison starts at the 5 for OSU.

If I could combine the teams it would look like this.

G: Javon Small
G: Milos Uzan
G: Bryce Thompson
PF: John Hugley
PF: Brandon Garrison

It's challenging to compare a guy like Thompson that we've seen to a guy like McCollum that we've only seen in mid-majors.

From backcourt guys that we've seen, I would definitely take Uzan over Thompson.

OU seemingly had its pick between McCollum and Small. They went with the guy that I was hoping for, so I'll comfortably take McCollum in that head-to-head as well.

A guy like Thompson would definitely have a role on this team, but he hasn't been the guy I thought he would be coming out of high school. Having said that, I'm not entirely sold guys like Cooper or Oweh would beat him out, though Cooper is the guy I would predict by season's end. It would mostly depend on fit and how badly the team needed Thompson's shooting.

Garrison is the only guy I think that would start on the combined team, and Thompson is the only other guy that I expect would consistently get double-digit minutes. Our upgrades aren't drastically better, but there will be absolutely no excuse for another Cowboy sweep this year.

McCollum is light years ahead of small.

Garrison is a center.

With level of competition, it's hard to know how the Small / McCollum comparison will play out, but the biggest difference that supports your perspective is that McCollum can really shoot the ball (89% free throw and 36% threes while taking most of those off the dribble). Form is pure. That should translate to the big 12, and I would suspect he gets more catch and shoots on a team with multiple ball-handlers like Uzan and Darthard.
