MBB TPT2 TRANSFER PORTAL THREAD 2

Did you watch the tape? Did you see those dunks? The fast breaks? I love Hill, but respectfully, I disagree.

So I’d take Johnson over Hill in a dunk contest. Much like I would take Marvin Johnson or Bam or any number of guys. As a basketball player? I mean, if he were that good offensively, he would have played more than 22 minutes per game, seeing as how SD State desperately needed more offense. And Hill is an absolutely elite defender, so Johnson isn’t going to be much/any better on that end.

Hill was high usage bc we didn't have anyone else. Jacob Groves was his backup...who was pretty useless defensively for us. Johnson had decent SR backup on a senior heavy team. Hill also played the SF/PF slot, where Keshad was pretty set at the PF spot. Again, better team/roster.

Keshad Johnson:
-1st in FG% in MWC (2021-22) 8th last year
-Top 10 in Defensive +/- last 2 years in MWC
-Top 10 in Defensive Rating last 2 years in MWC
-Top 10 ORB% last 2 years in MWC (11th in DRB%)
-4th and 8th last 2 years in Defensive Rating in MWC

Hill - Johnson:
Last 10(mpg): 33.1 - 23.4
PPG (per 40 mins): 11.1 - 12.8
RPG (per 40 mins): 7.3 - 8.8
APG (per 40 mins): 1.6 - 1.2
BPG (per 40 mins): 0.7 - 0.8

They are much more similar than you are trying to show.

Maybe I missed it, are we getting Johnson. I liked and hoped hill would stay, but he left, I would be glad to get Johnson. Needed help at the 4 defensively. Doesn't matter is he is better than Hill for me. I just don't think any of the other portal guys can defend in the post at all. Soeres (s) is a strictly a guard from the tape I have seen. I saw Hill as a small inside guy that was doing a good job of developing a perimeter game. Hill was a really good perimeter defender IMO. But I think Johnson might be a little better defender in the post ( he is a little bigger).

Outside of Johnson, who I assume is in or in play, anyone know how we are doing with any other players in the portal. Has Collins gone somewhere? Appreciate the info.

As for me, I basically agree with Wichita's assessment. Generally, pleased. Think we could be improved on defense. Would be happy if Javian was at least good enough to replace Grant's offense. Grant had some off games, but he was usually our first option and a good one. All in all, we have probably done about as well as you could with the record we had. So, good job to the staff so far.

I don't know about Sherfield from a scoring aspect but I think we definitely improved over his defense....so if the scoring part can be close but the defensive part be a big upgrade I'm good.

I think Soares is a huge step up athletically from JG, who I believe he is replacing, that is a good thing...he can't shoot like JG but he can defend and run the floor, score in transition.

I don't think there is any way you can look at Darthard and not think he won't be an upgrade over Cortes in my opinion. I didn't hate Cortes but he was not overly athletic, struggled getting to the hoop and was not a great defender. Cortes averaged 3.2 ppg, 1.6 rpg and 2.0 apg......Darthard 13.8 ppg, 3.5 rpg and 1.6 apg.....Bijan had a higher 3 pt% last year but Darthard has a career 37.8% 3 pt average which is very good.

Johnson would be an upgrade over Hill in almost every sense, other than 3 pt %.......

I will admit Darthard's stats were against generally weaker comp but it is still college comp but he had games against power 5 schools....he had 18 against Wake Forest, 8 against BYU, 9 vs Oregon, 9 vs Cincy, 13 vs Colorado,.........they were 28-9 and won all but one of the games I listed in OT vs Wake......I feel pretty good about Darthard.....he may be a backup for us but if we can get similar production off the bench I am perfectly fine with that.

You can't compare Darthard and Cortes just off of stats. Darthard played way more mins and against much weaker competition. I like Darthard, think he will be fine, but I'm not expecting much more stats wise vs what Cortes did here. I actually think Cortes is a better player and would fit better.. He's more of a true PG/ball handler and younger. If Cortes plays for Utah Valley right now I think he puts up similar or better numbers.. just my thoughts.

Going to be really hard to Land johnson!

USC- Bronny- The Beach

Darthard and Cortes are completely different players. Their roles on the team should be much different--particularly on offense where Cortes could be a primary ballhandler. I think you'll see Darthard in spot up situations on the three point line more often and also cutting off the ball and getting to the rim in a different way than Cortes. The question is more about whether that role is better suited for the team.

The WAC is certainly not the Big 12 and UVU's strength of schedule was 103 compared to our 2. But the WAC was the 11th best league last year according to KenPom (which was better than the A-10 for reference).

That is why I stated that he played against a weaker schedule but he faired pretty well against the bigger teams he played against. I'll take 9-10 ppg from a likely bench guy......he may or may not play big minutes but it isn't going to be a major feat to match Cortes' production.

I agree that Cortes is more of a PG/ball handler. Darthard is more of a scorer/shooting guard. He looks quicker on tape and gets to the hole better, which I like but that doesn't mean much. LOL

I like Darthard's game on film a little better but I willingly admit my view may be a little skewed by the fact that I didn't think Cortes was a Big 12 kid....at least not a Big 12 starter, just a decent role player and he was a DECENT role player on a bad team.

I agree with this assessment

I'm just guessing that Darthard will be a 3-5ppg at best and play defense.. again this is playing limited minutes being the 5th or 6th guard on our team. So, very similar to Cortes at the end of the day in terms of production.

I'm trying to understand why a player who was a starter would transfer into that situation? Are we offering that much NIL the 3rd guy off the bench?

If an All WAC 1st teamer is our 6th guard then Final 4 here we come!!!

Correct.

Almost like, why would he go to a situation that didn't have that, you know?

Maybe I am confused but this seems to me to be a negative comment about our coaches and the other players that we have lined up to play next year. Not something I would expect from a Sooner fan. Please tell me I am wrong.

You are wrong, that is okay. Hard to tell nuance via a message board. I was being snarky back to WT for being snarky in his response.

My point was, he wouldn't leave to come here if he didnt think we had good coaching and a good/decent roster.

From the article I read yesterday, it sounds like he wants to play more on the perimeter and to get a good NIL deal. I am not saying there is anything wrong with either of those things, but it doesn't necessarily sound like he is just looking to go someplace that has the best talent or coaching.

Thanks for clarifying

That is fair, if he is looking for that then. I tend to, make the assumption, go in the vain of someone who just went to the Finals wants to chase that again (the competitor in most of us would assume that, but we also don't have any idea of the NIL lure these kids deal with). But hey, I have been wrong before and will be wrong again.

We could offer him more perimeter play, but NIL...I can only assume matching USC would be tough.

Need to land Keshad Johnson somehow. He would really help with our defense and rebounding. his athleticism is NBA level. His shooting isn’t great or else he wouldn’t be in college.
