With 13 seconds left in regulation and the game tied, Midwest City senior Asia Davis felt uncomfortable at the free-throw line, and she missed both chances to take the lead.
But she got a chance to make up for the rare misses, making 5 of 6 free shots in overtime to lift No. 7 Midwest City past No. 8 Putnam West 60-56 in overtime Tuesday at Putnam West High School.
“I never miss that many free throws,” Davis said. “I guess I just let the game get in my head, and I’ve got to learn to really relax and hit free throws in a time like that. I could just feel myself really tensed up, but at the end I felt really relaxed.”
Davis, who has signed with Collin College in Dallas, finished with 19 points, seven of which came in the extra period as the Bombers pulled away in the final 60 seconds.
“She’s normally our senior leader and sometimes she’ll get in her head, but she let it go and continued,” Midwest City coach Katie Tompson said. “I’m proud of her.”
Midwest City (16-3) had jumped to an early 21-14 lead after one quarter, but Putnam West (15-4) battled back despite a knee injury to star Gabrielle Johnson that forced her to miss most of the first half. The Patriots led by 10 late in the third quarter.
But Midwest City had an answer behind its experienced guards with Davis and UT-Arlington signee Chinna Fair, who also had 19 points. Point guard Brooklyn Reeves tied the game with a layup at the 25-second mark to force the overtime.
“I’m just glad we didn’t break down,” Davis said. “This showed the kind of team we are, and we know how to stick together.”
It is not believed to be an ACL injury for Johnson. She did return in the second half with a knee brace and some tape. She finished with four points and 10 rebounds.
Putnam West sophomore Cenara Skanes finished with 22 points, and freshman Tilan Nolan chipped in 12.
