Midwestern State tonight

I agree that Chelsea's shot from the line looked very good but she did hit only 6-10 against MW and that number needs to be closer to 8-10 for her to get the true benefit from her ability to penetrate. I feel certain she will shoot closer to the mid-70% range from the line once she settles in.

She missed the first two - she had just entered her first college game, so maybe a case of freshman jitters - but then hit 6 of 8 (75%) - and as you said looked very comfortable shooting.

I thought it was a strange call.

The MW girl was out of bounds and Nancy had her back to her. The ball was already inbounded, and the girl - instead of going around Nancy - just started shoving her from behind - several times. It appeared Nancy had no idea what was going on - but when she turned around it knocked the MW girl down. It appeared to surprise everyone - even the ref - so he looked at the monitor - and called the flagrant 1. It was obviously unintentional - and probably more the MW girl's fault than Nancy's.

It did show that Nancy is tougher than her slim size suggests. She also is pretty athletic - dribbled pretty well, etc. She obviously understands the game.

And Chelsi Dungee is going to be a player - an excellent player. Very strong, great skill at driving, etc. She got to the line often - and shoots free throws well. We are really lucky to have her on the team. I'm excited about what she brings to the game.

I agree. Looked more like the MW girl kept moving the way Nancy moved and wanted to draw the foul. I thought it was flop when I saw it live. Nancy just kept pivoting trying to get rid of MW girl.

Yeah, the officials had no business calling that F1. I can't begin to guess what the three zebras thought they saw when they reviewed the play on the monitor, but the slow button on my DVR said "Not so fast, refs."

I studied the flagrant call, and it was totally nonsense. Unfortunately, Nancy will probably get some calls like that. She is obvious at 6-9.

The ball wasn't even in play. Midwestern had made two free throws. Nancy went to take the ball out of bounds. A Midwestern player was in her way. Nancy tried to step around, but the Midwestern player stepped in front, presumably by accident. Nancy simply moved, and the girl fell down, as though pushed---maybe, maybe not. A part of it looked staged--the end.

The flagrant part came when Nancy had her arm in front of her, but kind of against her own stomach, not extending her arm at all. But, as a result of the height disparity, Nancy's forearm/elbow was at the girl's head or neck level. The official apparently though Nancy had shoved her with her elbow or forearm. Nonsense. It appeared to be two players that couldn't avoid each other, continuing to move instead of stopping. There was a slight exaggeration when the girl fell, but only while falling.

I regard it as innocent on both parts, and an official who doesn't have enough sense to keep his whistle in his pocket.

I had a pretty good view live.
Ran right into each others front. Neither girl wanted to back away and let the other go, with Nancy going north to take the ball out of bounds, and the MWS player going south. It looked like both knew the other was not backing down, both equally intent on not going around, but it was really accidental and almost instant bump. Nancy was just bigger and stronger(good for OU's future), and was just tall enough that her elbows holding the ball were the other players head height. I would have called a double foul, as both were equally "pushing", trying to go through the other. I guess the elbow did touch the head, and with nancy being stronger and easier to see (LOL) the foul went on her.

Overall last night, came away happy. Team as a whole looked in better shape than some (Most?) of our teams do at the start of the year. derica obviously a little lighter and quicker, better defensively. ViVi looking like she has continued to develop into an inside force. Gioya had one short flash of dominance early in 3rd Q. Maddie and Peyton still steady players with or without shots taken. Gabby looked a little quicker and more confident (not as tired?-no summer games?) T'Ona looked almost great in open court, and solid all the time. Ej looked bad-looked good, first half bad, later looked like she ought to be the back up center. Treece didn't impress, probably wrong opposition for her to shine. Penzo really basketball smart and makes lots of off the ball plays, passes, defensive plays that impress me. Shaya her usual team player. Lanesia great in open court defense and offense during press. Chelsea impressive, aggressive, and demanding playing time with her skills. Nancy really good in short spurts, but not a good defensive rebounder yet. But blocked shots early, and MWS seemed to avoid the lane when she was in. Gonna be really good I think.
After the last few years, I am going to wait to see if this "team" lives up to its possibilities with actual on court productivity.

Watched the first 3 quarters freezing at spots particularly on defensive rebounds.
New offense seems to be better. More movement, less dribbling around the perimeter, much more penetrating and more kickouts to open players. Still not hitting treys well. Not sure our shooters are as good as hyped except for Derica.

Defense better than last year. If Sherri doesn't play pressure defense with the depth she has this year she never will. MSU did a good job in the first half at exploiting Edwards size but otherwise only got easy baskets when we failed to cover the outside shooters. Players seem to be moving their feet well.

Peyton made a nice basket after driving to the middle of the lane and shooting. She passed off every time last year. Good to see.

Maddie was Maddie. Nice early spurt and then not so much on offense. Good on boards and defense. Ditto Carter. Just dominated for a spurt but otherwise fairly quiet on offense. She had a couple of bad turnovers. Looks healthy and ready to go. Better discipline on defense with fewer bad fouls.
Wyatt continues to improve her overall game and will be valuable off the bench if she doesn't start.

Dungee was impressive but we didn't get much of a look at her overall offensive game. those drives to the hoop were impressive but may not be available against better opposition. She runs the floor well and looks good on D.

Nancy did change the MSU offense with her early blocks. They had a hard time getting open shots after that. She needs a lot of playing time this year. No sign of an offensive game yet except for garbage but very impressive running the floor for a layup after a block on the other end. That trailer layup on the break may become a nightmare for Big 12 teams. We really never tried to go to her inside much except for the pass Kellogg threw too low to her. Needs to work hard on the boards. Not enough for a player of her size.

The biggest negative I saw was defensive rebounding. With a few exceptions (Maddie and ViVi) we don't block out. And we don't always have many players going for the boards. Opponents go right by our rebounders to grab a board. Gabbi is great at rebounding out of position. Has a real nose for the ball but I never saw her block out anyone. ViVi also seems to get too far under the basket and rebounds go over her head. Needs to put a body on her opponent quicker and further from the hoop.
