New rivals 150

Man, Texas with two guys in the top 10. Yeesh. And neither is from Texas. Double yeesh.

Malcom are you sure that you are watching the same TMG that everyone else is watching. His mechanics on his shot are very good. He is a threat at the point position because he can get into the lane and shoot or dish. I think the first thing we will notice about him is how much quicker our offense will run. In other words he will attack more. TMG will be the true point guard that all of us have desired for this team. I can't wait to see the TMG/WW backcourt. BOOMER SOONER BABY!!!:clap

I didn't say he was a bad player, just that he isn't a five star and that he still has areas of his game to work on.

I have no problem with him being ranked #46. Hell, I'll take a top 50 overall player any year, I just don't get why Penn is ranked ahead of him. I guess Jerry knows more than people that voted him Texas POY. Even scarier for Texas is that he have a commit from Tristan Thompson from Findley Prep as well. He's a 2010 guy and probably 2nd best guy on their team behind Bradley.

i think TMG should have been ranked higher then #46 purely based on his offensive skill set. Not sure what you're seeing either on his jump shot, his mechanics and form look great to me. I think he should have been top 30, in fact looking at his game to me he is a lot more refined then WW's was going into college. But then again TMG isnt the athlete WW is so that makes up that difference and more.

Jai Lucas doesnt count, we know he was ranked that high due to connections etc. Same reason the stiffs who go to duke are always in the All American game and ranked in the top 30 etc.

You really think Coach K can't evaluate talent? He might get a slight bump in his players ratings due to rep but c'mon? I'm pretty sure he's proven decent at evaluating talent.

.753 Winning %
3 NCCA championships
10 Final Fours

I think I'll give him the benefit of the doubt... Not to mention, I think Capel learned from his example A LOT. Obviously from his father as well, but definitely from coach K.

I think it is more of a reference of how Duke has underachieved in the tournament in recent years. Also how the Duke teams of recent just don't seem to be fulled with the dominant players like they have had in the past.
Also it might have to deal with how Roy Williams and UNC is starting to hand it to them a lot more.

I guess you could say the same about the OU football team in bowls? But I don't think Stoops is any worse in evaluating talent.

No I think Duke failing to get out of the Sweet Sixteen since 2004 is a little different then OU making BCS bowls and being a top 10 team every year. These recent Duke teams just don't seem to be the same as the ones with Jay Williams, Sheldon Williams, Elton Brand, etc. I think Coach K is going for more of the 3-4 year players after being burned on some one and dones. Duke just doesn't seem to out athlete teams like they used to.

I think he is a top 40 player. A high 4 star is about right, which is where he is. He still has deficiencies. I do like he will continue to shoot even if he is cold (MCDAA) but he still has mechanics problems that need to be fixed. Plus he gets out of control on fast breaks and when penetrating.

I'm definitely excited for him, but I think Rivals has it right.

No.. this is what you said. You are the first person i've seen say he has mechanics problems. Is this something you noticed or is this something you've read? No one else seems to think this about his shot.

Also, where did you get this he gets out of control on fast breaks stuff? Is this something you've noticed or is this something you've read?

I haven't read anything about either of these two "deficiencies" as you call them. Not saying that you are wrong... just want to know where it comes from.

I know what I said.

I've watched his game tape, and those are areas I see him having trouble with. Besides the obvious height issue, I do see a strange jumper that will need to be refined.
Looking over the tape, on fast breaks and penetration, he seems to overthink at times in deciding whether to take a stop-gap and take the pull up jumper, pass to the open man, or go for the layup. Thus getting out of control.

I find it hard to believe a guy can be player of the year in the Houston area for two years in a row, be a McDonald's All American, but only be the 46th best prospect in the country.

I agree with FaithfulSooner: Our offense will look very different with TMG. We will go from basically having no real point guard to having a very good one. Penetration puts great pressure on a defense and opens up huge opportunities for other players to score. And we haven't had much of that lately.

...Fitz received offers from eight schools that played in the NCAA Tournament, and three of those programs made it all the way to the Elite 8.

An excellent observation!

I too have seen him penetrate too deep several times and get trapped because of his height, live and on his film.

He'll improve in that department.

As far as his shot, for the life of me it looks good as far as I'm concerned.

I agree with you on Lucas. I think it will also work out the same way with Pressey, although I think Pressey's competition in Texas is below what Lucas had. Lucas came out with Deandre Jordan, Gary Johnson, and Anthony Randolph. A lottery pick, an NBA center, and a future all conference guy.

Scotty Reynolds was rated 66th by rival. If he didn't have an amazing stretch against some great high school teams in the christmas tournament season, he probably wouldn't have gotten the bid. It was hard to keep him off because he badly outplayed alot of the guys ranked ahead of him head to head.

Duke has had top level recruiting classes in the last 4 to 5 years with multiple mcdonalds players yet every year its highly obvious that their talent level doesnt match up as a top 10 team in the country. I know Coach K has made a conscious effort recently to bring in more athletic big men due to the struggles hes had against good competition in recent years.

It was posted before but Im sure it had to do with Coach K wanting to recruit 4 year players as opposed to 1 or 2 year ones. Sadly the nature of college BBall is that those are the players that carry teams, the mid major way of thinking in recruiting shouldnt be at Duke.

Probably the same way the Fred Gulley can be a two time Gatorade Player of the Year in Arkansas and not be ranked in the top 150.

If Penn wasn't going to OSU would any of you care where he was ranked? I doubt it.

Honestly, it probably wouldn't be as big of a deal if was going to a non big 12 program. It really isn't a big deal anyway. I wouldn't trade you. I just think it is humerous that the Texas guys have TMG over Penn, but a national guy (Meyer) does not. Scout and ESPN have it the other way around.

As for TMG's shooting mechanics, I think they have improved tremendously since his sophomore year. He gets good rotation on the ball, and releases at the apex of his jump. I like his shot.

Well, Fred Gulley sucks. He's not even one of the best two prospect in Arkansas. AJ Walton and Purifoy are better.

Correction: Gulley's offensive shooting and dribbling sucks. Ugly form and nasty rotation. He is a really good defender and has a Big 12 ready body.

If OSU could put Gulley's defense, Reger's foot-speed, Penn's range, and Keiton's brain/consistency into Gulley's body, then THAT would be some player. haha
