*******OU-George Mason Game Thread*******

Finally hit a three....lol. Like the other poster said..some teaching after this game. Surprising that with a four guard offense, we had way too many to's against their press. The one with hornbeak trapped in the corner trying to heave the ball to halfcourt was horrid.

Great defense when we turn it up; really like the trapping d and the rebounding. Hield came back and had a good second half. Did something happen to Bennett? Don't remember him playing much in the second half?

Good game, Sooners!

I think he may have racked up too many fouls again.

You get upset too easy. The George Mason press probably cost them points. I lost count of how many run outs to the rim we had. We won by 15 as a 6 pt. favorite. That is called exceeding expectations.

We were one 1 for 12 from 3 and turned it over too many times. We still won easily. That is what good teams do.

:clap

Gary is right on with this one. We blew out a solid team in a game that may as well have been on the road. We did this while making some mistakes, sure. Has everyone forgotten that we mostly play freshman and sophomores? Teams as young as us aren't normally able to get away with bad shooting and mistakes. We should all be excited about what's to come not upset.

Buddy was off most of the day today as well from the offensive end.

Cousins is poor-man's Russell Westbrook. I have said it before, and I stand by it. Guy has the talent to be a MENACE driving to the cup, but still has to learn to play within himself. Remember how frustrating Russ was his first few years?

That is a very generous comparison

Yeah, I'm disappointed with that. Plenty of things that we need to work on. Doesn't change what I meant in my post.

If you read your posting history - you will see why.

Good game Sooners.

Tulsa comes to town on Saturday.

You are probably right, I overreact to the negatives, I just hate losing, and when it starts to look bad on the court (press break) I tend to lose it. I accept your statement and I apologize.

I don't get the incessant complaints from a couple of posters on this thread. Being a glass-is-half-empty fan can't possibly be much fun.

Here are a few facts for you to consider:

*Buddy definitely did not have his best game.
*A good ball control team in the first seven games had 19 TOs today.
*Cousins and Woodard weren't themselves, committing 8 and 5 TOs respectively.
*Neal was on the bench with an ankle injury
*OU was 1 of 12 from behind the arc, which was easily our worst performance from three point range.

Here's the best part: We still won the game by 15 on a neutral court!

This team doesn't have the depth or the talent to run up the score on everyone we play and win going away. Why not try to be happy with a win, even if it's by one point, and focus on the positives more often. Trust me, you'll enjoy the game a lot more.

Well done, max12! I'm sorry I didn't see this post before I said what I did in my response to the complaints. Believe me, none of us likes to see an OU team give up a big lead and let our opponents back in the game. What I liked, though, is that our kids made a run of their own every time GM threatened to move even closer.

Despite the fact that this was not our best game of the year, this was a very good win for OU today. To me, any win is a good win. But's that's just me. I'm not always satisfied. But I am rarely disappointed when the Sooners come out on top in the score. ;)

Few stats that stood out to me:

- 8 turnovers for Cousins. Yeesh.
- 5/6 from the free throw line for Spangler is good to see.
- 51-29 rebounding edge. LOVE that.
- 1-12 from 3 with the only make coming on our last shot of the game.

Some things to work on, namely breaking the press. But really happy with a 15 point win halfway across the country, as only a 5 point favorite.

Would having 3 players get a double double be a note worthy accomplishment?

Nah. 3 double in one game happens all the time nowadays. Haha honestly didn't realize we had other double doubles besides Spangler. Didn't seem like the announcers ever mentioned it. Maybe I'm going deaf.

The announcers seemed to be pro-George Mason throughout the entire game. When they praised us it was more of an apparent slam on GM such as they couldn't guard us off the dribble.

I just had the chance to watch the game DVR'ed. Yeah there were sloppy moments but the team played with incredible energy, were very good defensively and GM didn't look like they belonged in the same gym with us... Wow are we getting spoiled! Yeah we turned the ball over today and obviously have some things to work on, but man I thought it was a great win. 15 points on neutral, up there near them? I loved the way Spangler, Clark, Cousins, and Hield rebounded. No win is perfect but I loved this win. I didn't know what to expect in these games like Seton Hall, Mercer, and today. The guys are looking great and took care of business! I know there'll be some bad losses, and maybe some letdowns, but I like their intensity and effort so far. This team gets after it...

I too am surprised by some fans' reaction during recent games. The A&MCC game was a much better outing than comments here would have led me to believe. I've not yet watched today's game, but I followed score updates, and given that the closest GM got was ten points, I'll take the 15 point-win every time. I was a little worried about today's game -- on the road, a long trip to get there, a decent opponent.

It's funny, recently there was a discussion over whether or not we could enter conference play at 12-1. Many rushed to say it wouldn't happen.

Well, guess what -- there's a very good chance it WILL happen. Unless TA&M is better than they've appeared so far, we're very likely to make it happen.

Don't sweat it. That is part of what these game threads are for (to vent).

I probably came off to harshly. I am just really sensitive to aggies posting on here as "Sooner fans".

Glad you are on the board.

We were bad against the press at times. Also brilliant at times. Some get upset the first time something doesn't go perfect. Way too many turnovers and we have to stop getting doubled in the corner against the press. The time we had a quick return pass to the middle that led to a slam on the other end was what we are looking for. Of course, in basketball you don't get away doing the same thing every time but we have to avoid the traps in the corners. We are quick enough to do that.

Our quickness is going to help us in a lot of games. Far cry from last year when we had Fitz and Pledger on the court. Good guys and good Sooners who contributed but they didn't have near the quickness our current group has.

Very solid game. Off night offensively and still scored 81. Defense is looking better.

I thought the same thing. I watched the game real time and just read through this thread. This team is young and will only get better as the year progresses. Yes they had issues with the press, I am sure Lon will be on it! I do think there is a ceiling with this team, but the future is definitely brighter now than it has been in a long while...
