Real cities have cabs that operate on a regulated, standard rate, not "surge" rates.
I'm joking about the "real city" part--kind of.
You also have to remember, the cabs in NYC are not the same as in others. Most cabbies in Dallas until a few years ago would rather have you pull a gun on them than a credit card, often refusing to take you places unless you had cash. Uber changed the system, which has been better for everyone...location mapping, splitting fares, Starwood points, you name it. It forced the cabs to change their crappy service and technology.
