OU vs Utah State from Myrtle Beach 2pm CST on ESPN2

Virtually everyone has commented on the team's failings during the game. That doesn't preclude also mentioning the poor officiating. I don't think anyone has blamed the officiating exclusively or even primarily.

But we lost by three points and USU was awarded 13 more free throws than OU. Groves' phantom fourth foul put him on the bench at a key point late in the game, and Goldwire was fouled on the drive that drew us within one point late in the game, but no whistle. The game could have been tied.

So officiating played a key role in the game; it's really not debatable. But yes, we still should have won, as I--and virtually every other poster--have stated. And yes, as everyone has said, the team needs to improve in many areas.

Here we go again. This is so tiresome.

They were the aggressors. The aggressors typically shoot more free throws. We settled for bad jump-shots. A free-throw disparity is not necessarily a sign of bad officiating. Were there some marginal calls? Yes, I have yet to see a basketball game that was officiated perfectly. But there were bad calls both ways. Our biggest problems were that we let a guy from <checks notes> Utah State go all Charles Barkley on us and we also shot a ton of ill-advised shots. We got outrebounded and seemingly outcoached. Those are the reasons we lost the game.

What's tiresome is you and a few others insisting that officiating should be off-limits in postgame discussions. Again, the Sooners' shortcomings in the game have been mentioned plenty in this thread, especially in those comments made following the game. No one has blamed the officials for the loss; virtually everyone has acknowledged the ways in which the Sooners came up short. But you seem to be riled up that anyone would dare to even mention officiating as one of the factors in the game. You either need to get over that, learn to scroll past such complaints, or prepare yourself for a lifetime of frustration.

While that may be true re: agression levels.. we got hosed on some calls that seemed to not match the other way's calls. Ou lost the game tho by taking dumbass shots and careless TOs.. both can be true

It can also be a vicious circle: Getting the calls encourages aggressive offense and inhibits the opponent's aggression on defense. And that pattern can be established early in a game.

I’ve criticized officiating plenty when it was warranted. I don’t feel it was warranted in yesterday’s game. YMMV.

I don't recall anything that stood out, I didn't watch every minute of the game and wasn't waiting for a bad call..So that's that....next game

Well then, quit being a total hypocrite and whining at others for commenting on the officiating when they do it unless it's just utterly egregious or something

Oh so I’m a “total hypocrite” now for disagreeing about the officiating in this case. You should probably do a quick google search and research what that word means. You seem to be confused.

Take solace in the fact that it’s not college football. If you want to see bad officiating watch 5 minutes of that.

I would rather see comments on the play and performances of the team and the players than a full page debate on whether posters should be able to complain about officiating.

But I do sometimes complain about the officiating and if I believe there are bad calls I will say so.

Some officials are very good and others not so much.

Some want the game to be about them. See that more at the professional level but I remember one official that called OU games a lot that was a real showboat. And the TV people constantly talked him up as a great official. I thought he was mediocre at best.

Other officials are intimidated by home crowds and some coaches. And some coaches are expert at doing that. Digger Phelps of Notre Dame was the best I have ever seen to use body language to show absolute distain of officials. Never got technicals because he was smart enough to keep his mouth shut. But he was very effective at bringing a home crowd down of the officials. Gary Blair complained about every call against his team regardless of how egregious the foul and sure enough the officials often backed off and let the play get rougher rather than call constant fouls. Iowa State fans raise hell about every call against their teams.

That was one of the reasons I didn't hang around much last couple of years during games.
I don't know how bad it is now but in the past it seem like every other post was crying about the officials and if you said anything about it you instantly became a non OU fan and things went downhill from there...I know just all fans of teams do it but it got really bad here. Anyway, I know it is early and hard to really say but the team looks like there more to build on during the year than last.

I didn’t care for some of the officiating but we lost because we didn’t make shots and Utah state did. We didn’t execute our offense in the last 4-5 minutes and Utah state did. That’s it. Hopefully, this will be a learning experience and the team can grow from this and get better. The Big12 is a meat grinder and we have to play better to survive and advance.
