I've seen his name mentioned a few times on different threads, but curious if OU and Capel ever looked at Spangler?
What's his story?

By my understanding ou wasn't very involved in his recruitment.

He had a workout at OU in the summer. OU didn't offer. I think he would have signed if offered by OU.

There's no way he could be any worse than Hardrick.

We don't need someone who qualifies as slightly better than Hardrick. We need guys who are better than some of our starters.

Well I can't say if Ryan is better because I haven't seen him but I can't imagine him being as bad as Thompson. Isn't he 6'8? Someone link a highlight vid.

If by starters you mean Nick Thompson and CJ Washington, then Ryan fits the build. You probably need to go see this kid play. Only reason he didn't get offered is because they like Goff as a true center.

Spangler is light years better than Hardrick. Obviously not as experienced, but far more physical, athletic, and talented than Thompson already. He would be in the rotation on this year's team, especially how it has all shaken out. Not certain if the staff undervaued him or not. I imagine if they had known they would end up with 3-4 scholarships they would have definitely offered him. With only 1 to start with tho, they had to go with a proven guy like Goff. With the new circumstances however, it is sad to see a good local player, who wanted to be a Sooner btw, get away.

He is good. Can shoot the 3 as well. Go watch the kid, he is a player.

The guy is a nice player. I coached against him the summer with my EC jv team. We took them to overtime and i didn't have a player over 6ft tall. He had a nice game but he is not athletic and reminds me of Thompson. He is prob similar to the red head Gonzaga had a few years ago who could shoot it.

If you are reffering to East Central... He would start for ANY team in the State. Even 7th nationally ranked dougals and unranked EC...

Not Athletic?

Chill Brimm, there are always guys that come in and be overanalytical about certain players. Sometimes it's me. Fact is none of us are professional talent evaluators, even jv coaches. If a program like Gonzaga likes the kid, that says a whole bunch. They recruit just as good if not better than OU and OSU.

Spangler is rated as a solid mid major prospect. His limitations were clearly noted as a lack of lift and quickness. Those are two things that are very hard to overcome on the high major level.

One of the main issues with our team is a lack of high major athletic ability and you don't correct that by signing more guys with that issue.

Bottom Line:
Spangler is not going to wow scouts with bounce and flashy plays, but he is a glue-type that just knows how to win and compete. He has a great understanding for the game and plays it like a seasoned veteran. He should be a solid 4-man at the mid-major level.

OU went with the very athletic, unskilled player over the highly skilled, unathletic player.

You can make a good argument for both. For next years team, I want more athletes. I support their decision.

I wish people would quit assuming that just because a player is white, he's unathletic. He's more athletic than every post player OU has. The biggest attribute about him is he's physical and rebounds like an animal.

I didn't know he was white. I just went off the scouting report.

Speaking of EC...Do you know Coach (Brian) Morgan? He was there a couple years ago.

That scouting report is crap. I saw him with my eyes. I'm not an expert, but when you can follow dunk off two feet, block shots above the rim, and run teh court well, that doesn't make you unathletic. Goff has two inches and 3 years on him. That's all.
