Tayshawn Thomas news

I agree, it does seem that every appeal or special ruling involving the Sooners is denied, and/or it takes a lot longer than similar situations we see with other schools.

I could be wrong, but I think it's possible there is may be some bottled up resentment over the lawsuit OU and Georgia filed, and won, against the NCAA in the mid 80s. If there is a better explanation out there than the theory my active imagination won't let go of, I would sure like to hear it.

30 years later they should be over it. None of the decision makers from back then are likely still at the NCAA. I doubt many people are still around. Anyone with a brain at the NCAA would love OU and Georgia, tey have a lot more money today because OU won tat case.

I think they did ask for him to be eligible is because Houston hired a coach that got 2 schools placed on probation. His 5 year ban was one of the worst ever given by the NCAA!
The athletic department delayed the filing because they didn't want to offend Kelvin. I have no idea how much of that was in their report but it was the reason for Thomas leaving and it should be a good reason for immediate eligibility.

Hickey was a clear case of being run off by his former team so he was given the transfer based on that rule. Thomas wasn't run off nor was DGB.

I don't believe that. He had one foot out the door before Kelvin was ever hired.

DGB was certainly shown the door, according to everything I've read.

Yes he was shown the door for multiple issues which would get you kicked off any team. He wasn't shown the door because the coach didn't like him or they needed a scholarship for a better player. He was the best player on the team. OU didn't appeal with the NCAA because they didn't want more info to come out on him.

Yes Thomas was considering leaving Houston before Kelvin was hired but it wasn't a done deal. The fact remains it is a legitimate reason. The NCAA may not agree with me.:ez-roll:

I wonder what Anthony Hickey did to get kicked off the LSU team, and yet he got immediate eligibility at OSU via the "run off" rule. Hickey was Mr. Basketball in Kentucky his senior year of HS.

The guy was a good PG at LSU. Averaging 31.3 minutes a game, now over 3,000 minutes for his career (3,052) … Averaged 8.4 points per game, 2.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.8 steals … Was fifth in the league in assists average and fourth in steals average … Was the league leader in assist-to-turnover ratio overall (2.8) and in league games only (2.6) … Ranked No. 20 nationally in the category … 216 career steals, fifth on LSU’s all-time steals list … 360 career assists, eighth all-time at LSU … Had his best season from the arc, in number and percentage hitting 62-of-180, 34.4 percent … 166 for his first three seasons … 12 games in double figures, 46 for career … For career, 360 assists to just 159 turnovers … Will open his senior season needing just 95 points to become 41st player to score 1,000 career points at LSU.

He didn't get kicked off the LSU team for something trivial. Not with those kind of numbers. Yet he gets to play at OSU without redshirting a year.

OU sent the NCAA more information yesterday.

OU sent the NCAA more information yesterday.

Didn't that take close to two weeks? Why does it take so long for OU to respond. The first exhibition game is in two weeks.

We always blame the NCAA because we like OU but I am starting to think our compliance department (or whoever does this) might be part of the problem.

There's no real way for us to know. Maybe the NCAA only just asked for the new info.

I saw an article that said he (TaSwawn Thomas) had been unhappy about something and had nearly transferred before the prior coach left.

I'll give you what I know and think (opinion) regarding the Houston basketball situation. There were things "going on" in the athletic department that still haven't been disclosed. For example, there is more to the story why James Dickey suddenly resigned as Houston's head coach for personal reasons, and then took an assistant's job at OSU......

Go back to a little over a year ago. Houston's leading scorer was Joseph Young. Son of former "phi slamma jamma" member Michael Young who was a 1st round NBA draft pick in the Olajawan/Drexler days in the 80's. Joseph was Houston's leading scorer as a sophomore at 18 ppg.

Joseph originally signed a LOI out of HS to play for Providence but Dickey then signed Joseph's dad, Michael, to become the Director of Basketball Operations. Joseph then appealed to the NCAA and ended up signing with Houston ...... even after Providence wouldn't release him.

Some political "stuff" started and Dickey (maybe above him) reassigned Michael Young to some BS community relations job after Joseph's sophomore season .... for as long as Joseph was on the U of H team. Michael didn't take the reassignment well and sued the university. In the meantime, Joseph transferred to Oregon and won his waiver appeal to play for the Ducks without sitting out a year.... I guess to keep Joseph out of the middle of the legal battles between his dad and the university. He then led Oregon in scoring last year at 18.9 ppg as a junior.... I was a little surprised TaShawn didn't follow Joseph to Oregon.

TaShawn and Joseph Young are buddies ..... and the team thought Michael Young got screwed over. Joseph suddenly left the team after his dad was reassigned (fired), but there were still some unhappy campers in the locker room last season..... partly because they had empathy for Joseph (teammate) and partly because the players liked their advocate, Michael Young. After the season, Dickey resigned .... or was forced out. There was still unrest, and then Kelvin was hired.

Players were already unhappy for a year after Michael got reassigned, but then Houston hired a hard-ass coach (Kelvin) who brought a history of NCAA infractions with him. Thomas had enough of all the shenanigans, and decided to transfer. If he had enough time, he probably would have done it the year before.

JMHO on how things transpired at U of H....... I still don't think the whole story has been made public and doubt it ever will.

Houston basketball ugly story

I think this is the second time they asked for more info although I can't confirm it. However I agree our compliance office is a huge problem!
