Tulsa Billionaire Becomes Thunder co-owner

The two biased Dallasites in this thread.

Have friends trying to get their children into Dealey?

The elementary school in our neighborhood in East Dallas is quite good now, but we still went private school for our son.

Know one that is. Expect the private vs. public decision to be a tough one for many families as the options improve in the public sector.

Does Jeff's US New link make a strong argument that OKC >>> Tulsa in regards to schools.

The bang for your buck is decreasing because the public schools are so much better here, but they are still significantly behind the private schools. For example, St. Marks blows away Highland Park HS according to the educators in this metroplex. The top private schools are still better, but that doesn't mean one cannot get a quality eduation at a public school...I did (but in OK and not TX).

Tulsa got George Strait because the BOK Center is one of the most profitable, successful multi-event areas in the United States.

It's the same reason that we got Paul McCartney twice and practically every other A-list arena tour since the place opened.

Its not just the arena, its availability. If the thunder played all of there games in tulsa, OKC would be getting all the concerts.

A ticket Broker I know told me OKC turns away lots of concerts due to the NBA schedule not being released early enough to accomidate the concert tour set up. Tulsa benifits from that. I enjoy going to Tulsa for concerts, but Tulsa would give up all of the concerts to have the Thunder play in Tulsa.

Then why does Dallas and Houston not have that problem? They both get plenty of big name concerts in their sports arenas.

Are you retarded, or do you just come off that way on message boards?

You're telling me that Booker T. Washington is NOT the best high school in the Tulsa metro?

U.S. News and World Report disagrees.

They also disagree on your assessment of Edison and Memorial, vis a vis Owasso and B.A.

They rank schools based on "college readiness index", "math proficiency", "reading proficiency" and "student/teacher ratio."

Here's how the schools in question rank:

BTW: 48.1, 3.2, 3.4, 19:1

Edison: 33.7, 2.3, 2.9, 19:1

Memorial: 25.2, 2.5, 2.7, 17:1

Owasso: 22.9, 2.5, 2.6, 18:1

Broken Arrow: 15.7, 2.2, 2.4, 18:1

BTW is far better than the rest, which is - again - why they are the highest ranked HS in the Tulsa metro.

The funny thing is that Edison and Memorial are both ranked higher in college prep than both Owasso and B.A. and are basically the same (or slightly better) in the other measures.

I would have never guessed this. I knew Booker T was a good school because it is a magnet school for good students but I had no idea it ranked so much higher than the others. Thank you for sharing that.

Because if they can schedule ahead of time in Tulsa instead of OKC they don't have to wait for the NBA schedule to cover this Geographic area. This leaves an open for Dallas and Houston to have a more flexible date when the arena is available. OKC and Tulsa are to close so most concerts are not going to book both

Just looked at the american airlines center in Dallas. Only 5 or so major tours scheduled there until decembter. Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake (OKC has as well) Aerosmith, Paul McCartny, Queen with Adam Lambert( not sure this is major)

IN OKC until december is Backstreet boys avril lavigne, James Taylor, Montley crew ( not sure if this would be considered major) Justin Timberlake, and the NCAA WOmes Volleyball Championship.

Dallas Mavericks may have a few more high profile, but OKC compares to the amount that Mavs arena has.

Houston Toyota center had Queen, Katy Perry Lady Gaga, Marc Anthamy, Justin Timberlake. Again. Probably little better, but not an overly more amount of concerts over what OKC has.

BOK Center Major events from there website through December - They do not seem to have a ton of concerts scheduled at this time.
Dave Mathews, Bruno Mars, Montly Crue, UFC, One Republic, One Direction, Katy Perry

First, don't ever use that word on here again, have a few friends with kids that way and you Totally offended me with that comment Moron!!
And Read stupid, i didn't mention T. Washington, my comment was about Edison and Memorial. You are a total moron if you don't understand that no one with school age kids OR that wants resale value for their home will buy in those distirct's. Don't quote me some scores stats, you are really stupid if you think they are good schools. And by the way, T. Washington cant even be considered in this conversation as they "PICK" their students from a population of 400,000 Tulsa residents. The only ones who don't get picked are the great athletes who they seem to let in, lol.

"Don't give any stats that back up your opinions.... just use loose conjecture that isn't based in reality."

And yet you call me a moron. LOL.

As for the "re-sale value of homes." You maybe should check some of the real estate in the Edison or Memorial districts before you make yourself look even dumber. If that is even possible.

This whole "the BOK Center gets better concerts because of the Thunder" argument is lame, and not grounded in reality.

The BOK Center doesn't have the NBA, obviously, but it DOES have other tenants that require to be scheduled around for concerts.

  • The Tulsa Oilers play 33 home games at the BOK center in between October and March. (Plus more for playoffs)
  • The Tulsa Shock play 17 home games in between May and August.

Those two tenants alone make 50+ days of the year where the BOK Center isn't available for a concert or other event.

That's roughly the same number of days that are taken up by the 41 regular season NBA games and playoffs.

The BOK Center gets great concerts because it has remained highly profitable and highly successful every year of its existence.

Part of that is because it's somewhat of a regional draw. You have the Tulsa metro with ~900,000 people, but you also have Nortwest Arkansas that is roughly 1.5 hours away with another ~500,000 people.

And here is how dumb you are Jeff, you dont even know how to read a study or the results correctly. Memorial AND Edison had less than 50% of their student body tested!! They picked who took the test while Broken Arrow and the others had most of their students tested, hmmmm. And, The report
ONLY ranks schools who received an award so most schools were left out of the possibility of being ranked , duh!
Did you also know that most of the kids who are , like you rudely referred to above as retarded, challenged are all bused (Tulsa kids too) to Broken Arrow to be educated and ALL of them are incredibly given the same testing as the other kids AND their scores are averaged into Broken Arrow's averages? I doubt you knew that you just spewed out a bunch of crap. Now who looks stupid?

Did you know that BA has over the last 5 years was in the top 5 in the state in National Merit Scholars and also in the top 5 in the state for % of graduates who went to college? Bet you didn't.

And for your information, I received my BBA ( for people like you that is a Bachelors in Business Administration) 25 years ago and
I W-2ed $213,000 last year - if you don't believe me pm me and I will meet you and prove it. So respond to this idiot Jeffrey!!

Test scores at some schools can be misleading. My nephew moved to Jenks school district for about 5 weeks for elementry school. . He was having a hard time with the move (away from friends and family) and was not doing well at school. The teacher at Jenks said they were putting him into Special Ed Classes due to his grades. Never had grade issues in Norman at all.

When confronted the teacher advised that this was district policy for students they felt could not score well on the state tests.

They were not dropping it and were going to place him even without parents consent, so they moved back to norman where he is back with his friends and family and making good grades again. As a husband of an elementry school teacher, some schools make way to big a deal of making sure only the students that score high on tests actually take the tests. Its a major failure of the Public schools. Although Oklahoma does have alot of good public schools.

I hardly think or hear about Tulsa, nor do any of the people i come in contact. Seems like a nice city, and the campus of Oral Roberts has awesome buildings. why would anyone be bitter either way?
