UNC, Mich. St. to play on ship that buried Bin Laden

That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

I think its awesome

Why is that awesome?

If I were the President of UNC or Michigan State I wouldnt want to create a circus atmosphere on the burial site (of sorts) of the most dangerous and symbolic man in the world. That just opens the door for some nutcase to blow himself up on your campus because you decided to host a basketball game on freakin navy ship.

I don't think they are going to move the ship the the exact location where they dumped him overboard.

The USO has always put on shows on Navy ships. I don't know why a basketball game is any different.

Hope none of the players is prone to sea sickness!

I know it wont be at the same spot, but its the same boat. Its a symbol, which is why that story is on ESPN.com.

I just wouldn't want any part of that.

I'm with abd on this. It sounds like a bit short-sited. You have nothing to gain but cheap and tacky publicity. Even if you honestly think you aren't making yourself a target it is in poor taste. It would be like having the OU-Texas football game at the UN war crimes detention center and making the offensive coordinators call plays from the cell that Slobodan Milosevic died in.

They didn't choose to be on that ship. It's just the way it worked out.

I think playing a game on a ship is pretty cool.

What? your kidding right? We haven't sustained an attack since osamas death but because of a college bball game it will happen? The guy who blew himself up on OU's campus didn't need a reason. You are blowing this way, way out of proportion.

There have been attempts (one in New York and one onboard a flight I believe near Detroit... both failed). Nothing on the scale of 9/11, but certainly comparable to someone doing something on a college campus.

both happened prior to osama's death. bigad is saying because a college team is playing upon the ship his dead body was dropped from a terrorist is going to attack.

Ya.... right.

I think playing a game on a ship is pretty cool.

If you were an OU fan, would you rather see OU play against OSU in Norman at the Lloyd Noble Center or would you rather fly a few thousand miles, get a hotel room, rent a car, and watch OU play OSU in front of 5,000 people on a battleship outside?

College atmospheres are great on gameday. Battleships, are not.

I am saying that an extremist could interpret the game as some kind of celebration and mockery of Osama Bin Laden and decide to take action. That is not very far fetched. Some of these guys are willing to blow themselves up to kill a guy who drew a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed for the newspaper funny section.

Just play the game on your campus, it will be fantastic. The people will love it.

Yeah... skimmed through and missed that part of your post.

abd, I'd see your point if this was UNC playing Duke. But it's not. It's a non-conference game. Would I want Mizzou/kansas moved to a neutral location thousands of miles away? No. But if Mizzou and Florida decided to play somewhere like this I'd be all for it.

Why? So about 1,000 retired fans from each school can hop in the ol' RV or jump on an airplane and fly across the country to watch two schools play at some weird venue for no reason?

I can think of about 15,000 ticket holders who would rather see the game in Gainesville or Columbia, and an entire student body who would rather see the game come to Columbia/Gainesville.

Personally I think it's stupid, yet another way for programs to dodge the home/home scheduling for good non-conference matchups. No one goes on the road anymore for fear of seeding in March.

Well I'll have to disagree with you there. I'll step back from that being so crazy, but I think terrorists taking that risk would target something more important than a college bball game. You are right though, those guys are so insane you never know what they're thinking.

Wasn't this scheduled b/f osama's death?

Yes. It's not like we have a lot of Aircraft Carriers we can choose from, either. Also, I think the security on a trillion dollar piece of military equipment is going to be pretty decent, don't you?

Lets look back at my original remark:
