UNT extends McCasland contract

Well, guess that settles the McCasland to OU debate! If he was a serious contender for the OU job, why would he sign a contract extension with his current employer?

Next!

I think it’s gonna be Kellen.

We will never know if he was a serious contender in Joe C.’s mind as much as he is/was in the media and message boards. Typically, Joe C.’s short list or hires have not been names in the public speculation. The good news if his pattern holds true, Turgeon is not under consideration.

But smart move by UNT, especially to move before and if Tech opens up. With his roots to Tech, they could probably get him if they want.

Maybe the names on his list were still playing this weekend. Whoever his target is he needs to move before extensions get done and transfer portal decisions are made.

What about this stops OU from pursuing McCasland? I’m not sold he wouldn’t still take the OU job if offered.

No way IMO. Would be a terrible hire IMO

Why? He is Kelvin’s lead assistant. I think he could bring a lot of the same type of coaching to OU that Kelvin did back in the day. I’m all in on the Heart, Hustle, and Hardwood.

I saw he was named HC in waiting at Houston too though in 2019. We will see what happens.

I’ve got a confession to make. Time is passing so fast for me I thought Kellen was in his late 20s. I was surprised to learn he’s 35. Heck, he’s been an assistant at UH since 2014. He also served as an assistant at App State for three years as well as a year at SFA. He’s an OU alum with a solid coaching background. He learned how to coach from his Dad. That’s good enough for me!

He’s 35! Man, that makes me feel old.

More coaching experience as an assistant than Juwan Howard and Penny Hardaway combined, and those hires look pretty good.

Watch any Houston game for the last 5 years and it’s pretty apparent Kellen is completely engaged in coaching the game. And no doubt he has passion, energy, and charisma. My biggest concern would be recruiting as I’m not sure who he has been responsible for recruiting at App St or Houston.

I would be opposed to Kellen vs a guy like Moser or Enfield but would want him over Turgeon any day.

I’ve been reading some Houston message boards and some of their fans feel like Kellen may be their best recruiter. That wouldn’t surprise me.

The article says he signed an extension in January and they’ve been talking about revising it again. Nothing in the article would prevent OU or texas tech from hiring McCasland.

I don’t think anyone knows what Joe C is going to do. Maybe McCasland isn’t a serious candidate. Maybe he’s targeting kellen Sampson. Who knows?

I never thought about it that way.

There’s a lot to like about Kellen! I’m beginning to warm to the idea of giving him a shot. We could do worse, that’s for sure. Correction: we have done worse, a lot worse.

I believe that’s Alvin brooks. If kellen is hired, bringing him along would be huge for recruiting. He has a reputation as one of the best recruiters in Houston area. He’s an older coach too that could help mentor Kellen on his first HC job.

I hear ya but it sounds like Kellen is quite the recruiter himself.

There is a reason why Kellen has a lot of success recruiting players, and why he is able to get players, like Hinton, to commit to Houston before they even step foot on campus.

“It starts with honesty. It starts with being genuine,” Kellen said. “You got to build that trust … You got to be vulnerable.”

Kellen is a huge reason why Houston has been able to convince some big-time athletes to join the program.

“If it wasn’t for Kellen, we wouldn’t have got Caleb Mills,” Kelvin said. “We wouldn’t have gotten Nate Hinton. We wouldn’t have gotten Devin Davis.”

Houston signed a player from NOC Tonkawa a few years ago and Kellen did all the recruiting, the NOC coach never talked to Kelvin.

If he has recruited the kids they have now, I'm on board.

I am warming up to this idea. As ada said, we could do much worse, and we have done much worse.

If it is kellen, he should demand a new arena within 5 yrs or he’s not taking the job. He can stay and be HC at Houston.
