update

... then I don't clearly understand the timing of Capel's firing. It seems like a bad business move to not have something to 'upgrade to' before attempting to upgrade.

Maybe it's just as I suggested in another post, Capel was never going to get it turned around because there were too many negative things that other coaches were using against him in recruiting but that seems like a pretty daring move to go ahead and ax him vs letting it play out one more year. I won't beat that dead horse anymore but... damn.

:facepalm

But did you know Joe C hired Stoops?

Just to follow up on my "Buzz's-buyout-drops" conspiracy theory.

If my math is good, the quote from the 25th about it going down in two weeks would coincide with the end of the tourney (more or less). I could see that be realistic. With that in mind, I STILL don't get a great feeling about Buzz coming, but it DOES make you wonder...

apparently Joe C. poops Snicker's bars and sweats expensive cologne.

Chewey,

You've been great with the new info and spot on. What I would like to ask you is if you have any idea WHY Brad Stevens is out of the picture?

No interest? Loyal to Butler? Waiting on something better? Money? Buyout? Location? NCAA? We won't pay the big bucks?

Any or all?

Thanks for keeping us informed.

Why in the world would he leave Butler for OU now? If he is leaving, he can probably land a better job than what OU is today. If not, why not just stay? Never understood his name being thrown about so much. Nice option, but very, very unlikely.

I can see quite a few reasons for leaving - but that certainly doesn't mean they outweigh the justification for staying.

Many coaches just want a change when things get stale.

We can't worry about that.

There is no justification to not waiting around to ask him. If we hire Joe Blow, and find out that Stevens would have been interested, that's unforgivable. Waiting around to ask, and then get told no, is not unforgivable. Joe Blow will still be available a week from now.

Pretty sure we can send out feelers to know if we have a chance.

Besides, he'd be a **** to leave after back to back FF's. He isn't leaving. Not now at least. And not for OU.

You have to strike while the iron is hot. What if Butler flames out next year and doesn't make the tournament? He wouldn't even be considered by the major programs.

Exactly. Look what happened to Jim Larranaga

There is a VERY good chance they don't make the tournament next year. And quite frankly, I'd like to see him coach without having the dude from last year, Mack, and Howard all as upperclassmen. Sometimes coaches can luck into having a great squad for a year or two. I'm not saying for sure that is the case at Butler, but I don't necessarily think he's as great a coach as the last two years might imply that he is. Time will tell.

$$$$$$$ is the short answer and he is not going to leave Butler. It is the call you have to make he is the hottest coach in the country but no one at OU thinks he will leave

chewy -- where was Kruger on the pecking order? Was he before or after Rose? I know Rose said "no thanks" yesterday and Kruger said it today, but curious if Kruger thought about it a little?

Thanks Chewy.

I can understand him not leaving because he wants to be there.

But let me just say this ---

The day the University of Oklahoma can't (or won't) meet or surpass what a Butler University is paying a basketball coach, including buyout, salary and incentives is the day we should just close down the d*** program and spend the money somewhere else.

His buyout is $6m. When you add that to the $2m paid to Capel and a $2m+ salary to Stevens, you get a lot of money spent on a sport that lost money last year. I don't see the Regents approving $10m+ in coaching expenditures for one year in one sport.
