Wichita Falls’ Hirschi coach Donald Hedge is familiar with top players in Texas and Oklahoma. The Oklahoma native often sees many of the best players from both states, as he runs the Elite 14 Showcase, an event that brings top teams from Oklahoma and Texas to Wichita Falls for a November scrimmage. Hedge has had the chance to watch Hammond, since he was a big contributor at the recent OKHoops.com Exposure Combines. After watching the young big man, he offered this assessment about Hammond:
“I see a lot of the top young big guys in Texas and there is not a kid in his class that I’ve seen in the DFW area that I would pick over Hammond. That kid has a motor and just plays hard all the time. I would love to go to war with him on my side.”
As someone said, lot to work with. Needs to play lower and explode up, but that hopefully will come with strength. Obviously has some time before college, but early indicators appear a redshirt year would do wonders for his game.
4. Jacob Hammond, 6’9 C, Duncan:
He is an under the radar big man who has only played one year of basketball, but taking to the game like a sponge. Beginning to understand how to use long arms to patrol the lane and is becoming aggressive at attacking the rim. Underdeveloped offensively and inexperienced but has started to show flashes recently that hints at a high ceiling.
Player Comparison: Ex OU center Longar Longar
As you said, he has some time to develop before choosing a college in the 2014 class. But, according to Will Jenning's recruiting report in May (see below), he has only been playing basketball for one year. He is by all accounts a hard worker who is highly motivated to get better. Judging by the progress he's made to this point, I wouldn't rule out the possibility that he will be ready to contribute at the next level when his high school career is over.
Thats over a year old report on Hammond.
So, give us an update.
What is your take on Hammond? If the report is a year old and the video you posted is current, how far has he come in the last twelve months? Considering his work ethic and his upside, is it realistic to believe that he could be a top 100 recruit in the 2014 class?
