Visiting this week, new highlight video from high school/AAU season.

Plays a little bit too low to the rim for his height, also makes the common mistake of putting the ball on the floor when it isn't necessary. That said, we need him and at least two more guys just like him in this class.

Do we know if he is a legit 6-10? Looks like he has a ton of potential. Hope he ends up a Sooner.

There's a lot to work with here. Type of 4 year player you build programs around.
Height good mobility and nice shooting touch.

To echo AtlantaSooner's theme, there's a lot to be said for a 6' 10" big with a great work ethic, a high motor and a huge upside. Add to those qualities the fact that he is a local kid, and the prospects that he could turn into a gem down the road a ways only get better.

Found this quote on Hammond that really got my attention:

Wichita Falls’ Hirschi coach Donald Hedge is familiar with top players in Texas and Oklahoma. The Oklahoma native often sees many of the best players from both states, as he runs the Elite 14 Showcase, an event that brings top teams from Oklahoma and Texas to Wichita Falls for a November scrimmage. Hedge has had the chance to watch Hammond, since he was a big contributor at the recent OKHoops.com Exposure Combines. After watching the young big man, he offered this assessment about Hammond:
“I see a lot of the top young big guys in Texas and there is not a kid in his class that I’ve seen in the DFW area that I would pick over Hammond. That kid has a motor and just plays hard all the time. I would love to go to war with him on my side.”

As someone said, lot to work with. Needs to play lower and explode up, but that hopefully will come with strength. Obviously has some time before college, but early indicators appear a redshirt year would do wonders for his game.

As you said, he has some time to develop before choosing a college in the 2014 class. But, according to Will Jenning's recruiting report in May (see below), he has only been playing basketball for one year. He is by all accounts a hard worker who is highly motivated to get better. Judging by the progress he's made to this point, I wouldn't rule out the possibility that he will be ready to contribute at the next level when his high school career is over.

4. Jacob Hammond, 6’9 C, Duncan:
He is an under the radar big man who has only played one year of basketball, but taking to the game like a sponge. Beginning to understand how to use long arms to patrol the lane and is becoming aggressive at attacking the rim. Underdeveloped offensively and inexperienced but has started to show flashes recently that hints at a high ceiling.
Player Comparison: Ex OU center Longar Longar

Thats over a year old report on Hammond.

Thats over a year old report on Hammond.

So, give us an update.

What is your take on Hammond? If the report is a year old and the video you posted is current, how far has he come in the last twelve months? Considering his work ethic and his upside, is it realistic to believe that he could be a top 100 recruit in the 2014 class?

Layman opinion: Two readily evident flaws are easily corrected. Holds the ball low and puts it on the floor = 99.9% of bigs out there. They can get away with it at that level.

I like the kid's game...nice touch outside, willing to get inside and bang and can block some shots...definitely a good prospect...

If I could bet and had a few extra bucks I would wager that this kid is related to former OU center Bill Hammond, OUs starting center of the late 50s. Bill was about 6'7 and 200 lbs plus from Oklahoma City. Wouldn't this be legacy material? Could be a grandson or great nephew?

Thanks, Sam! I added OKHoops.com to my favorites list sometime ago, but keep forgetting to go there for recruiting updates. I like the site, by the way!

It's nice to see a kid like Hammond starting to get the attention of recruiters on a national scale. Everything I've read so far seems to suggest that he plays harder than most, and runs the floor really well for a guy his size. If he continues to refine the skill set I saw on the highlight video you posted, he could get a lot more attention down the road a ways.
