What all is included in expenses? WTH is osu spending $10M on? They are a football school now!

OSU isn't getting their money's worth! I'm surprised UNC isn't in the top 10.

SMU is the only non Big 6 school inside the top 41, sitting at 27. I wonder why that is?

The problem with comparisons like this is that the accounting treatment and allocation of expenses is not the same at all schools.

For example, consider the cost of “security personnel” at home basketball games. Some schools might allocate these expenses directly to basketball operations, while others might charge these expenses to a “contract services” account which is not allocated to basketball operations, but instead may be included in administrative or operational overhead for the entire athletic department.

There are numerous detailed expense categories which may be accounted for, and allocated following different accounting procedures. Groups like “Equity in Athletics” do not have access to the detailed accounting records from each university, thus they do the best they can with summarized information available in public records.

While there may be audited balance sheets and financial statements for the athletic department as a whole, there can be significant variation in how costs are allocated to the various sports by different universities, and how these costs are reported to the public.

In other words, take these comparisons with a grain of salt. They do not always compare apples-to-apples.

This is incredible. Good find. Very interesting.

This...and by looking at the list makes it appear these numbers are even more worthless.

There's a video with Markel Brown, Brian Williams and Mike Cobbins that walks through the basketball facilities. I could easily see where 10 million is getting spent.

Of course 2 million is on the coach.

I may be wrong but I don't believe capital expenditures would be included in general expenses. But maybe so.
