I know some of you don't like the guy but the man from Oklahoma is a darn good coach. He has 22 wins and will likely have between 26-28 wins heading into the NCAA Tournament. He is doing that with a young team having played in the toughest conference and playing Duke, Villanova, Wake Forest, CU, Florida, Georgetown and San Diego State in non-conference play. That is impressive no matter what you think of the guy or KU. (And I hate KU!)

I like Self just fine, always have. I think he's one of the best coaches in the country. He just coaches at the wrong school.

I echo your sentiments about the Jayhawks. KU is at the bottom of my list, as in whale poop low. It doesn't get much lower or stinkier than that. The only school I despise more is Duke.

If he wants to stay at Kansas and keep coaching until he is in his late 60s, Self will have a legitimate chance to catch Coach K for all-time wins.

Dude can coach. Aggies want him so bad and I hope he keeps turning them down!

I blame Roy Williams.

Had he just stuck around Kansas for 3 more years, I truly believe that Bill Self would be the head coach at OSU today.

Because Self likely would have still been at Illinois when Sean was fired, and we would have hired him away from there.

Oh well.

I always knew you were a smart guy. I agree Duke is at the bottom with KU a close second to last.

I have been saying this for a couple of years.

His team is young but he and KU has recruited top tier talent. He just reloads.

Doubt it. He had Illinois rolling, i bet he would only have moved to a top 5 or 10 elite BB school.

Osu isn't elite top 5-10??? What? Why? How? We have the loudest arena in the country, it says so on my phamplet at enrollment... :facepalm:facepalm:facepalm

(Insert a lot of sarcasm)

He definitely had Illinois rolling...Weber took his recruits to the title game. In fairness to Jeff, though, we'd all like to think that if a "home run" hire is someone who was an alum at our favorite school, we'd have a shot at him. Of course, we tried this in football with Darrell Royal after Bud retired, so we know it doesn't always work out the way we hope.

I like Bill Self...never says anything to get under anyone's skin...and would rather have him at Kansas than OSU.

Self damn near left Kansas for OSU after winning the championship.

I feel like he would have left Illinois.

Great recruiter/Average in-game coach (or so most if not all of my friends that are KU fans tell me)

First Jeff, he was never going to leave KU for Stoolwater - much tougher there than at a Blue Blood bball school.

And second, he is one of the top 30, yes 30, coaches in the NCAA. Why do I say that? Because KU is like OU in football, it is MUCH easier to recruit at KU in bball than all but about 3 other schools. If Self was at OSU, he definitely would not be able to recruit at the level he does AND with the ease he does at KU. So, he would have OSU at a better place but no better than old Sutton did. That is why he won't leave KU. He gets in every single door with recruits he wants and when he brings them for a recruiting trip there are 16,200 butts in every seat.

There are 30 other coaches, at least, if you put them at KU that would be doing as well as he is. It is MUCH easier to be a "great" coach at a school like KU.

Except he has won everywhere he's coached.

OSU fans are so delusional.

So do you know the same people that have inside access to the OSU athletic department that I do?

He was VERY close to accepting Holder's offer.

You can choose not to believe me if you want. I really don't care.

But I know what I know.

There was a very small chance that Self could have been lured away from Kansas after winning the championship. There was zero chance that he would have left Illinois for the OSU job when Sean was fired. He is very close to the Suttons, much too much so that he would agree to succeed a fired and disgraced Sean.

As for his coaching ability, I'd take Kruger over Self any day. Self is a good enough coach, I'm sure. But the previous posters were correct when they said his success at KU is based on being able to get whatever players we wants year in and year out.
