From interview with Toby Rowland. Probably not the answer anyone is looking for:

@Sportstalk1400: Castiglione on renovating the LNC "We'll see. We understand it has a lot of needs. It's not an inexpensive fix."

Thank you for sharing. I'd love to pull the quotes from Joe C. during Kruger's introductory press conference/pep rally. If I recall correctly he made some pretty bold claims about the venue and the money OU was going to invest into the bball program, same thing that was said when Capel arrived, but alas nothing (revolutionary) has been done (or even close to what he proclaimed that day). I fear nothing will be done. Hopefully a national title will change that as it is long overdue.

Joe's contribution to basketball was hiring Lon! He has done very little else. They have blocked transfers, they won't let them sign guys for the next year if we know a player is leaving until he officially is out of school. And a variety of other things that the administration harasses this staff about when they are not going to cheat!

That is very troubling to hear. It goes right along with not giving Bob enough money to hire a support coaching staff like so many of the other top programs have in football.

With the history of recent violations, I'm glad our AD is overly concerned. Last thing we need is more violations.

It is not the admins job to assume a staff isn't going to cheat (knowingly or out of ignorance). I'm glad they are harassing

If Bob was a win at all costs coach he would give $500k back to hire 7 or so support staffers.

Was able to hear the interview with Joe C, answering a question about renovating the LNC.

Joe C response: That requires a LOT of funding, hum, hum, hum.

It ain't happening any time before 2020/25 folks. Sounds like a backseat subject until a major donor comes in with $50M imho. Has been for decades. OU doesn't have vision to their fund raising from my perspective. They are effective in football due to known interest from many avenues, but in basketball it's simply antiquated.

That's coming from a football first fan, but truly po'd OU hasn't done anything worth its salt in BB facilities or arena other than average and average.

Joe did go on to say the S&C facility at the loading dock area of LNC is in detail design. You know those near the basement of the LNC. Fortunately, Kruger isn't a young coach looking to move on, because these facilties won't keep a future young coach locked down. Winning basketball games isn't enough to secure a fan base looking for a true fan experience. Ask OU football, who is traveling down this road as I type, investing $160M in an endzone project with fantastic fan experience attractions.

Kudos to Joe C and OU for their football vision, major No-goes for their basketball vision.

I don't think Joe is perfect but in fairness to Joe when Kruger was announced Oil was strong and I think the shale boom was really kicking in. The Oklahoma economy is different right now.

Unlike the fans, Joe C. has to live in the real world. I'm sure if we had our very own sugar daddy like some schools do, this could happen sooner rather than later.

Yes, really quite ridiculous. We don't have unlimited resources. Football is the cash cow and brings in the most revenue, by far! We will have to wait until financially sound to complete the major renovations to LNC. The practice facility (and new strength and conditioning facilities) are most important to the players/recruits and we are in good position with those (in spite of what others might think).

We have our sugar daddies, they just don't run their mouths like others do. Most, however, are closely tied with the oil and gas industry and are feeling the effects of low oil prices. And many choose to focus on the educational aspects of OUr University rather than athletics!

They harass them about legal things. Maybe they should have done their jobs with the previous staffs.
Joe could cut a few costs by eliminating the massive business office and assistant AD for every little thing.

Who is 'they'?

Who is 'them'?

What legal things are you talking about?

Unfortunately, a 'massive business office' is required to cross all the Is and dot all the Ts for the NCAA. I don't see that changing any time soon.

Banks name all kinds of people VP of this and VP of that but don't necessarily pay them big bucks. I suspect most of the 'Assitant ADs' are the same way.

I think he's talking about the compliance office. I know some folks in and around the football program and have heard them say compliance has gone over-the-top with being hyper-vigilant and bureaucratic. It seems to be the case with basketball too. James Fraschilla and some other OU athletes had an ongoing twitter gag @ the OU compliance account where they would ask whether silly crap was somehow a violation. It was a joke, but there was obviously a tone of frustration as well.

On one hand, I'm glad OU is trying to keep it clean, but on the other, I think they're hamstringing the coaches who are trying to compete with schools who have the gloves completely off.

I understand the frustration but I think it keeps us from getting in deep trouble when someone does mess up. Look at what happened to Missouri basketball recently when they had a problem similar to the problem Bomar caused. We investigated and turned it in ourselves and got a mild rebuke. Missouri? Not so much.

And that's what it comes down to. Would you rather us do things the right way and maybe not win as much, or do everything we can to win and risk having the NCAA hammer dropped on us. And our fans base is divided on this subject.

Interesting. What transfers have they blocked?

In general (not just OU) administration overhead is bloated, especially when you compare to the actual value the employee provides. And that's not just for athletics, goes all the way to the academic side as well. A lot of these are well paying jobs relative to the work needed and contribute to the rising costs of higher education.

But most of that is another discussion for a separate thread.

I'm sure the Sampson and Capel ordeals called for a hiring of many roles that should have been dissolved by now once the controls have been in place and continuing education outlined as part of the induction program for these athletes.
