Colby Daniels tweeet (Kruger Retiring!)

Re: Colby Daniels tweeet

Gut punch. Love Lon to bits. Took us out of the post-Capel dark ages and I'll forever be thankful and grateful for that and the 2016 Final Four team/run.

I trust Joe C. but am very nervous about our next hire.

Re: Colby Daniels tweeet

I wonder if this has anything to do with Kevin getting the UNLV job. I could see him wanting to hang around his son's program.

I'm happy for Lon, he had a good 10-year run at OU.

Re: Colby Daniels tweeet

Who's going to start the coaching search thread. Placing bets!

Re: Colby Daniels tweeet

Jeff Capel begs to disagree.

I wish I had faith in Joe C. in this case, because I think he's a great AD. But he blew it badly in hiring Capel and then had to pay through the nose to get Coach Kruger to come in and clean up the mess.

College hoops is slimy through and through, and there aren't that many coaches out there that can be counted on to do things the right way. I think it's been underappreciated by many that we had a guy at the helm we didn't have to worry about getting us on probation. That's very likely over now.

Yep it was a mistake, but you're not going be perfect with every hire. It happens. I'm sure Joe C. has learned from that mistake.

CBS Sports reporting Hartman will get a shot to interview.

Sheesh no. SMH

It's not the end of the world. It rather depends on who the hire is. It seems coaches at the larger programs are the ones who cheat as opposed to those coaching at smaller low key schools. You think ORU cheats like Kansas et al?

Re: Colby Daniels tweeet

Lon was the right coach on and off the court at the time OU needed it. as its been said a class act all the way, enjoy your well earned retirement in Vegas.

I think a coach from a school like ORU might feel increased pressure at a bigger school and succumb to temptation in order to keep his job. Kruger had a proven record at this level -- a head coach from a smaller program (or any assistant coach) doesn't. Will they stick to doing things the right way, or will the pressure get to them, like it did Capel?

Re: Colby Daniels tweeet

Using Capel as the reason to be "disgruntled" over this is kind of sad. No program gets it right ALL of the time. On paper, Capel was a great hire. I don't think Joe C. "missed" on that hire, because everything at the time looked great about it to me. It didn't work out. We moved on.

I do worry that Joe C. will probably be a little conservative in this hire. The NT coach might be the guy, b/c from all accounts, he is pretty safe. I'd still prefer to push our limits a bit, and at least try to find a higher upside option. I'm not sure I'm ready to take this big of a leap, but I hope Joe C. at least interviews Quannas White.

Re: Colby Daniels tweeet

Man, this news stinks. I fear we're in for a huge slide in our basketball prospects.

I think the opposite is also a possibility. Assuming Joe C hires a younger coach who is capable of winning over our current players and recruits, as well as attract transfers and recruits we don’t even know about right now, this could be a win/win for OU!

I like Lon, too. He’s a fine man and we owe him a great deal of gratitude for what he has done for our basketball program. But, it would be selfish of me to expect him to continue as our coach much longer.

He’s 68 years old, and I can’t help but be happy for him. He’s going back to Vegas to live in his brand new $3 million house where he will be close to his son, plenty of sunshine, unlimited golf and old friends who will welcome him back “home!”

We should be happy for Lon, not sad.

My point is if you go for a big hire from an established program you likely increase the chance of bringing in the seediness you detest. If you bring in someone from a lesser known program you perhaps reduce the prospects of welcoming the seediness. What happens afterwards is another discussion.

Re: Colby Daniels tweeet

Love Lon. Perfect hire at the perfect time for us. Needed a stabilizer and he did that and more. The run from 2013-2016 was really, really fun. Since then I’d say the results have been “ok” and things do feel stagnant to me. Feels like the time is right. I would grade Lon’s time here as no worse than an A- especially when you consider the kind of person/representative he’s been for the University.

Now, the first call you make is to ole Pitino up at Iona— just make REALLY sure he’s serious about finishing his career there and staying out of the Power 5. I’d make that call just to say I did. Then, the task gets tough. Last time Joe C hired a younger, less coach it ended in disaster. But he can’t let that failure deter him in his next search.

First part regarding timing is 100% right, the timing is right for OU to go younger. The last 2 years it's felt like OU has just treaded water and it's time to move onto the next step for the progam

On the potential of hiring Pitino yikes. I'd guess that if Pitino called Joe C he'd probably hang up on him.
