1st of all, let me explain that I'm not excusing anything related to gang banging, or streetlife. I make no excuses for anything related to ignorance/violence/etc. Awhile back I TRIED to explain some of the reasons why TMG was posting certain lingo on his FB page, and a certain poster accused me of making excuses for gang members.

I just wanted to add a few things for those who truly are wondering what might be TMG's problem(s).

I'm guessing most of your Facebook "friends" didn't grow up in an environment in which using proper, slang-free English gave them the label of "sell-out" or "Uncle Tom." While his language seems "illiterate" to you, it makes perfect sense to his intended audience (his actual friends, not fans that are internet stalking him).

I'm so glad that someone FINALLY said it. The sad part is that we have many around these message boards who sit back and do not recognize or care about what is going on with many of the kids/cultures that we get glimpses of when they sign with our favorite college team... It is a way of life that most would not understand.

Like Smash says, I gurantee you that TMG knows how to spell "you". Some here would be shocked to learn that gangs have a totally different spelling/language that they use. It has been reported here that TMG had some gang affiliated lingo on his page this past season, and the mispelled words that you are seeing line up with that type of lingo. Crips replace certain letters in their texts because those letters are considered blood related. Bloods will replace certain letters in their texts because certain letters are associated with being a Crip. This may be foolishness to many of us, but it is life for many of the kids we love to see wearing the C&C.

As many here know, I work as a social worker/counselor. I got an email from a young lady just a few days ago. In the email she responded to several questions that I asked her during our interview to determine her strengths/needs. This is a sample of what she typed: I wunt 2 havv may*e 3 khidsz and nevvaer merr-eeee eny-1. Translation: I want to have maybe 3 kids and never marry anyone.

This young lady is in the juvenile courts system because of some pending charges. She has no father and a mother who has never been in her life. She lives with her maternal grandmother who is in her 70's, and has custody of 5 grandchildren/neices/nephews. The young lady is 16, and when I got her 10th grade school records, I was shocked at how high her scores were on the state benchmark tests. I asked her about the mispellings, and she laughed at me. Her answer was that I'm part of that Cuz crew, and we use that cuz talk, you dig??? She was identifying herself as a crip gang member who uses only crip language when talking/texting/typing.

I promise you that this young lady can spell at least on a 10th grade level, but she would be considered a " mark" by her set..... I'm not defending the kids or anything, but some here need to understand that these kids have been engrafted into certain mindsets and belief systems, and many are never able to leave that crap behind, even when staring an opportunity square in the face. Kids like the young lady and kids like TMG are why I do the job that i do. If everyone beats them down, and no one takes the time to reach out to them and try to show a different way, then we see a vicious cycle which engulfs the inner city communities.

I probably need to get a life, but I decided to take a break from some paperwork, and search some MySpace/Facebook pages of young people that I know personally. Some of these kids are in HS, others are in college. Here is a sampling of some of the posts that I found. All of these kids are inner city kids, many with gang affiliations.

3, 4, 5 are by a 19 yr old female, college student, and her exchanges with a 17 yr old HS senior. All are decent students.
I could go on and on, but the point is made.... I think.

While I agree with this but the appearance of the texts and perception are 90% of the problem. While I understand what he's writing, a lot of people won't and assume he's ghetto.

True. He may be ghetto!!!!:ez-laugh::ez-laugh: That was my entire point. Many don't want to admit or deal with the fact that some of our favorite athletes are not clean cut choir boys. Many would not be here, if they didn't have physical talents.

the point about TMG writing for his audience is well taken, 110% correct, and it's my fault for not thinking about that.

I honestly don't care who they are writing for, have more respect for yourself. This is what causes stereotypes and it's there own fault.

Mizzy thank you for taking the time to explain this. I hope people on this message board will take the time to read this. Everyone doesn't get to grow up and live in a glass house. BOOMER SOONER BABY!!!

Right...this is what causes stereotypes...Just like women who walk through a parking garage unattended cause rapes...

2/3rds free and reduced lunch? That's nothing, that's not even close to the students my wife teaches. A huge majority of the kids at CHHS are great kids that really just have crappy lives, and for the most part it has nothing to do with anything they have done. They can't control that their whole families are involved in gangs, they can't control that their parents are in jail, they can't control that they may have no utilities or food. My wife's students often send her texts that somewhat resemble above postings, it's just how they like to write. As for TMG posting that nobody wanted to see him succeed and that we were just "haters", that's the main problem there. He doesn't see that a vast majority of people are "hating" on him because they do want him to succeed. I realize that he can more than likely go overseas and still make more money than I ever will, but is that really his goal?

I wasn't talking about anyone but TMG. I don't really care about the other people that went to his school or the crips and bloods. He made it into a respected college, and should have represented it in a better way, even if that meant changing his spelling habits.

That's just it, a lot of these kids grew up in an environment where self-respect was foreign to them. It's a world most of us can't understand. Basketball opens the door for opportunities some of them only dreamed of when they were little. A few make it by adjusting to a totally different lifestyle than the one they knew. Many have trouble adapting and end up going back to their old way of life.

To be perfectly honest I can't relate to these kids. But I know they're out there, and I'm glad guys like jmizzy are doing what they can to help.

You have my utmost respect and gratitude, jmizzy! :clap

at this point all these guys know there page is being viewed and critiqued...it is as much a show as anything else right now...they have you guys gobbling it right up...

JMizzy, i agree with you spot on...problem is that most people are so far from knowing the reality that they cant comprehend it...thankfully i'm not that far removed from seeing it on a daily basis on my teams that i understand what is going on...keep the knowledge coming...

Good posting Jmizzy.

I understand him perfectly, but I have a different background then most of the people critiquing his grammar and spelling. Most people grow up only seeing one lingo and one type of culture, so why would people make fun of someone else from a different culture? I'm sure we would all hope he represents the school well, but I'm not going to throw him under the bus when he is talking like he has talked with his friends and culture all his life.

talking like that is fine but some of the content is alarming to me. then again, i'm just a white boy

I think the content is part of the differences in speech. I'm also white.

it shouldn't be. calling women derogatory names, etc shouldn't be right now matter how you say it or where you are from

Good try! More like white kids that think it' funny to put a confederate flag on their truck. Don't try so hard to twist my words next time. Also, if he is not able to make a living with professional ball, he will most likely have to turn to a life of crime to survive. It's called maturity, he needs to start showing some.

I really did not care what he typed or how he typed or whom it was directed. I am just sad the kid can't except challenges and make changes to allow the future to be good for him. We all have one thing in common growing up; we listen to people we should not be listening too. WE all make mistakes and we should all learn from them. Now, Tommy still has a chance to learn from this and hopefully he will. But, why does being from a different culture allow you a pass on growing older and smarter.
